Every Wednesday the Year 4 students have had an Art session with the Art Teacher, Mrs Jessop, from the Senior Campus who has been travelling to the Junior Campus to add to the Primary Art programme.

Term I saw Mrs Hutchison's class not only produce some great art but develop a helpful responsible and independent work ethic through the Arts.

Students learnt about the colour wheel and basic colour mixing to produce these stunning colour wheel eyes.

Daniel and Jayne's work were selected because of their craftsmanship and wonderful helpful attitudes to help the Art class run more smoothly.

About Mobile Phones: It is estimated that over 31 million mobile phones are in use in Australia.

It is estimated that there are more than 23.5 million old and unused mobile phones stashed away in cupboards and drawers at home and work.

Over 95% of the materials in mobile phones can be recovered to make new products. The gold, silver, copper, nickel, cadmium and plastics in the mobiles can be turned into jewellery, stainless steel, batteries and plastic fence posts and pallets. The mobile phone industry claims that you can recover the same amount of gold from 50,000 handsets as from mining 110 tonnes of gold ore.

Recycle with us, or, if your mobile is still working and you would like it to be reused, you could have it repaired, pass it on to family or friends, donate it to a charity, or sell it to a company that offers cash for old mobiles phones.

Help us save the environment.

Principal’s Report

Most of our secondary students are revising for exams and teachers are checking assessment records in preparation for Semester 1 reports, which will go home on the 29 June. I have been impressed by the work ethic of the majority of our secondary students and it is great to see so many with positive aspirations for their future, both in terms of career and academic choices. Putting a positive effort into and engaging in class activities is a key to success.

Completing class assignments is important, as is completing homework. Homework is often a contentious issue across a District High School, with differing expectations from parents. Homework in primary school is about regular reading, phonics, spelling practice and working with numbers. Upper primary students may get additional assignments or project work but it must always relate directly to the classroom learning programs and be appropriate to the needs of students. I have some parents asking that students be given homework to “get ready for secondary school,” but it is well documented that preparation of students for the time commitment of homework anticipated in years to come is not a sound basis for setting homework. To support the development of students‟ independence as learners and to further the partnership between school and home our Year 5/6 classes now provide a homework guide for parents, similar to that we provide for secondary students and parents. I know many parents have responded positively to this initiative. It

is important that homework should be set without impinging on reasonable time for family, recreational and cultural pursuits and I remind everyone that teachers are very happy to talk to individual parents about the homework needs of their children in all year levels.

Mr Edwards and I attended professional learning last week to look at the new WA Digital Technology Curriculum and we are excited to be planning for an exciting approach to ICT across the school, incorporating coding and robotics in a STEM or STEAM focus: (STEM; Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. STEAM; Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics). The purchase of additional iPads has commenced and we are now waiting on upgrades to our network system to implement the use of these across both campuses.

The School Board anticipate reviewing many of our school policies over the rest of the year, including our Sunsmart Policy. Deputy Principal’s Report - Senior Campus

At Donnybrook District High School Our goal is to provide each student with every opportunity to achieve

success and find a career or learning pathway that they are happy with. We give our Year 10 students the

opportunity to complete a Certificate 1 TAFE course in Hospitality, Agrifoods or Metals and Engineering.

These courses along with life skills courses like SDERA‟s Keys for Life and a St John‟s Senior First Aid

Certificate provide a well-rounded education increasing employability and competitiveness when selecting

Year 11 courses.

Manea Senior College presented to our Year 9 and 10 Students on 20 of May and Harvey Agricultural

College and Bunbury Senior High School will visit to present to all those students still unsure about Year 11

pathways. These presentations will hopefully enable many to see the wide range of options available to them

and importantly it will make them aware of the competition that exists for the more desirable courses.

It is important to remind all students that they are not all guaranteed entry into their chosen

pathway. Last year a number of our Year 10 students did not receive offers from schools as their reports and

grades did not make them competitive against other applicants. For those concerned there is still significant

time available to make the necessary changes to their learning habits to improve their grades

and especially their report comments. If you or your child would like to find out more about what

is available or how to achieve success from their learning do not hesitate to contact the school.

Associate Principal - Junior Campus

In my first five weeks at the Junior Campus I have

seen the vibrant work going on across all clusters. In

particular I have noted the extensive changes in the

curriculum including Kindergarten and Pre-Primary.

The high level work with basic literacy and numeracy

is evident when I see the writing and letter

identification in pre-school. As well as this our high

impact targeting of spelling is evident in every

classroom at the Junior Campus. As spelling mastery

also beefs up the ability to read we have a strong

focus on continuous improvement. I commend all

students and staff on this strong literacy focus. It is

excellent to see all students striving to meet weekly

targets.

School Support Staff within the Junior Campus: we

have a supreme group of highly dedicated

Educational Assistants. In synchronised work with

the teachers and their high level individual support

programmes I see their incredible, talented work in

supporting all students in their care. Every student

pays 100% attention to their wonderful guides. I

invite any parent or carer to come in and see how

these unsung heroes make such a difference to very

student in their care. They are all enthusiastic and

make every child feel special and appreciated: their

efforts are life changing. Well done to you all: Sue

Pember, Sue Attwood, Barbara Brodison, Nicole

Munro, Belinda King, Penny Priest, Peta Murphy,

Linda Martindale, Patricia O‟Dine, Sue Attwood, Mary

-Anne Buck and Joanne Atherton.

Gardener and Cleaners: added to this team is the

gardener, Rachel Seton, cleaners Terri Morgan, Len

Cain, Shane Cullen, who do the unsung work around

the school in the early hours and until almost 6pm at

night. Further than this they step in and help where

needed, add curtains here, plants there and give

impeccable service to students and staff. The garden

as you can see is in continual transition as the Senior

Campus Cert 1 Agrifoods students work solidly under

Mrs Seton‟s guidance. Mrs Seton certainly keeps the

Junior Campus grounds in very good shape.

Tying this altogether is Jane Lockhart who is a core

staff member who ensures all is run smoothly in the

office no matter what the task. She knows every

student and provides positive care to every student

and staff member. To all support staff, a very

special thank you.

First Aid Focus and St John Ambulance

volunteer visits: for the next 4 weeks we have Mrs

Kathy Irvine coming in to talk about basic first aid

from Pre-Primary who started last Friday right

through to the Year 6s on the 24 of June. After each

class the ambulance pays a visit so that students can

look at and meet the volunteers present and look at

the ambulance equipment. Year 1 had their visit as

Pre-Primary‟s in 2015.

No Bullying Policy: as far as possible we maintain

an absolute no tolerance for bullying. I have no

tolerance for bullying as do all staff. We need parent

contact if you hear of any repeat behaviours that

affect your child. We will intervene and set up

continuous monitoring to stamp any out!

You Can Do It Too Incursion: last Thursday we had

Llynda an entertainer visit us to pass on the message

about how we can make mistakes as we learn. It is

how we progress, as well as it teaches us to be

resilient and patient as we build our skills, whether it

is reading, writing, numeracy or at sporting skills.

The whole audience were enthralled at the high level

skills of the artist. Llynda engaged the audience

100%. We had Year 1s and 2s prompting the actress

to “keep trying”. The students were spellbound by

her performance. Added to this, three parents and

the grandparents who were there were also

captured by the excitement and the energy on

display. I have never seen such a quality show which

enthused the audience so well. Special thanks to

parents and carers for supporting the

„You Can Do It Too message‟.

Music Support Group

A huge thank you is extended to parents and friends

who supported the “Tulips With A Difference‟ fund

raiser. A total of $1600.50 of orders were received.

This total resulted in $480 being shared across both

school sites, with teacher‟s being able to purchase

an item/items on their music wish list.

The Band is busy preparing for their upcoming

performance at the Bunbury Eisteddfod, on Saturday,

18 June 2016. This will be the first competition

performance for many of the new Year 6 band

members.

The Band will be joined by students from Collie

Senior High School, and will meet up with them prior

at a workshop at the Noggerup Hall on Sunday 12

June,2016 for a final rehearsal.

Permission notes have been distributed and

students are reminded to return these along with

money to Mrs Armstrong promptly, remembering she

is only in the school on Tuesday‟s.

Sweet Potato Chips

Our first harvest from the Kitchen Garden has

been over 8kg of sweet potato.

We gave some to the Hospitality students who

cooked these yummy chips for us to share.

One sweet potato weighed just under 5kg! This

took the students a lot of effort to dig it out.

P&C Fundraising Events Term 2

The P& C have organised two fundraising events this term. The first

being a Wood Raffle on Friday 17 and Saturday 18 June week 8.

The second is a Cake Stall on Saturday 25 June Week 9. Both these

events need volunteers to man the tables and donations of baked

goodies. If you can spare an hour or so, please fill in your chosen

time/day/event on the sheet at the Junior Campus front office. A flyer

will be sent off soon with information regarding the baked items for the
