Rabbi Spira-Savett

(Continued on the following page …)

One morning around the start of every summer, I pack up a beach chair, a large Frap-pacino, tallit and tefillin, water and sunscreen, and a notebook, and I head out to Marblehead Neck on the North Shore in Massachusetts. There’s a big stone there called

Castle Rock. It takes some fancy footwork to climb to the top with the folded up beach chair in one arm, but this will be the eighth time I set up there. I put on my tallit and tefillin; the breeze even on the hot-test day swirls my tallit like a sail. I look out into the ocean, chant to myself some of the beautiful psalms

about the sea, and meditate on my morning prayers. After I finish, with the infinity of the

sea and the sky before me, I sit down and start writing. New ideas, dreams that are unfinished from the last visit to the rock. Brainstorms, crazy things, nothing’s off the table. Teaching ideas, sermon ideas, program ideas, names of people I want to recruit to work on any of the above.I have been religious, so to speak,

about this conversation with myself at the start of each summer. This sum-mer, I’d like to add a complementary layer – conversations with you.So you will see in this bulletin the

details of my “summer tour.” First off, I am going to park myself on

particular days for an hour or more at a variety of coffee shops and out-door spots around our area. Coffee, tea, a beach chair, etc. are on me if you show up. Ask me questions – questions that

seem Jewish or seem like there might be a Jewish take on them, about things in your life or the world. Give me an idea for something, practical or off the wall. Each time I’ll post about what I will be reading while I wait for people to drop by, and maybe it’s something you want to read and discuss too.Second, I’ve marked off some times

after evening minyan to solicit your ideas and input on a couple of things. Sermons, for Shabbat mornings and

Talk Back

Turmoil prevails across a wide swath of the Middle East. People are being displaced. Fighting among competing factions persists in Syria, Iraq and Ye-men. Parts of Egypt and Turkey are affected as well. Jordan and Lebanon are swollen nearly to the breaking point with the influx of displaced persons. Russia, Iran and the United States and others are participating through proxies and some direct military involvement. Hezbollah is conducting its first foreign engage-ment as well as preparing for a future fight with Israel.

Israel In the New Middle East

President Michael Harris

(Continued on the following page …)

In this context, Professor Alex Mintz, director of the Institute for Policy and Strategy of the Interdis-ciplinary Center (IDC) in Herzliya Israel, convened experts in security, economics, the political sphere, diplomats and scholars from Israel, the US, Europe and the Middle East. The theme of the Herzliya Conference was how Israel fits in and what should be its path going forward. I was honored to be invited to participate in the conference, which Ruth and I did in mid-June for four days. It was quite an intense experience,

sobering and uplifting at the same time. Speakers used the occasion of the conference to make major political announcements and to express their vision going forward

in the rancorous competition that characterizes the Israeli political scene, which captured front page headlines in the Israeli, American and foreign press. Perhaps in future I will attempt to

make sense of the Israeli political scene, which is always quite interest-ing if a bit confusing, or describe the attitudes among the various segments of the Israeli population toward the future of relations with Palestinians, or the military security situation be-tween Israel and its neighbors. This month, what I thought I would do is to take a step back and look at the shifting alignments among the major players in the Middle East and how changing national interests may affect Israel going forward.

the High Holy Days – what are you interested in hearing about? What are the ethical issues, the spiritual questions, the topics in family life and society that you want to hear a Jewish perspective on? Are there people within our community, or oth-ers around you’ve heard of, who you think I should invite onto the bimah? Last summer I did this once, and it

was really helpful to me. I want to do it more this time around.Another, other project I have go-

ing is a new version of the Siddur (prayerbook). I’ve been writing down

translations and commentaries, and experimenting with formats for English, Hebrew, and transliteration. So on a couple of evenings I’ll invite you to look them over, read things out loud and critique the sound. I’d like to know what would make the Siddur a better resource for you – what kinds of formats, instructions, explanations you’re looking for.My hope is to produce soon an ex-

perimental, spiral-bound booklet we can test out during evening services. The undefined part of my “tour” is

an open invitation to you, to host

To set the context, let’s review a map of the region, how the current map came to be and what is going on today. The basic contours of the map of the middle east were drawn in 1916 by two European diplo-mats, Sykes and Picot, who were quintessential “empire men”. They carved up portions of the Ottoman Empire they anticipated conquer-ing into a French sphere of influ-ence and a British one. They drew straight lines using a broad marker on a small map. For example, at a meeting in Downing Street, Mark Sykes pointed to a map and told the prime minister: “I should like to draw a line from the “e” in Acre to the last “k” in Kirkuk.” After hostilities in the area con-

cluded, a few changes were made and so we came to have the current map. One change moved the demarcation between the British and French spheres of influence a bit north from Acre to a mountainous ridge line, which today constitutes the border between Israel and Lebanon/Syria. The Ottoman Empire, which was thus carved up, represented a multi-ethnic, multi-national, multi-

religious empire in which communities were largely respon-sible for their own governance. The Eu-ropeans carved out new political entities and chose particular groups to serve as proxy leaders. The new polities, defined by geographic lines, severed communi-ties, ethnic groups, religious groups across these lines. In the current tur-

moil, we see states failing and many of the smaller, sometimes really an-cient, communities being trampled on. People who lived cooperatively under the Ottomans and earlier Moslem empires are now trying to scratch out their place in the sun and sometimes coming into conflict with previously amicable neighbors. In previously fertile regions now suffering from drought people are on the move to find new homes. Experts familiar with the region, who spoke at the conference, do not expect the nation states of the

former Iraq or Syria to reconstitute as they were. More controversial was whether Turkey will continue in its current borders. This leaves some countries, like

Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States cut off from their normal routes of supply (via Syria and Iraq). This is also a particularly pressing problem for Turkey, a traditional supplier to the Arab Middle East. Some of these same countries, and Egypt as well, also feel particularly threatened by a rising, militant Iran.

an evening at your home, or a res-taurant/bar/cafe, on a topic you’re interested in. Convene a group, or just clear a date with me and we’ll do it.I hope you’ll find me sometime

this summer for one of these con-versations. The invitation of course is always open, not just at these scheduled times but any time and all year round. The summer is a good time for me and for us to explore, to dream, and to learn. L’shalom,

No Place Like Home“Blessed shall you be in your comings

and blessed shall you be in your goings.” (Deut. 28:6)Twenty-eight

y e a r s a g o , my husband, Mitch, and I made the ‘exo-dus’ from Mas-sachusetts to New Hamp-shire. No sea split for us. We simply drove north from Chelsea until we found what has become our home for almost thirty years. Twenty-six years ago, we joined Temple Beth Abraham. It was only a matter of weeks before I received a call asking me if I was interested in teaching in the religious school. At that time I was nearly eight months pregnant so I politely declined but left the door open. The next call came less than a year later when representatives of the synagogue reached out to see if I was interested in applying for the position of school director. That was the beginning of my professional relationship with TBA to a new posi-tion, not only leading the school, but

developing our programs for kids of all ages an. I served as the Education Director for twenty years. As text from the Torah teaches, we

are blessed in our comings and goings. Like Jacob who rested his head on a rock and dreamed of angels going up and coming down, I too discovered a sacred place in my work at the syna-gogue. While I wasn’t fully aware of this at the time, it didn’t take too long for me to see the beauty and holiness in the community, our community. Six years have passed since I went

out from my formal work in the syna-gogue. Most of you know that I was asked to take over running a graduate education program at Brandeis Uni-versity that prepares its students to teach in Jewish day schools. I learned a great deal while at Brandeis. I loved working with graduate students and enjoyed being part of a strong faculty, a like-minded learning community. But as the Biblical text says, there is blessing in both the comings and the goings. Life is a cycle. I came, I left and now I am back.As a result of my

work at Brandeis,

I return to you as a more experienced educational leader. I feel very fortu-nate to have this opportunity to work within the educational leadership of TBA. This is a blessing for me, and I hope to demonstrate that together, we can make this a blessing for all of us. I look forward to working with all of

you, whether you have children in the school or not. As you know, “it takes a village to raise a child.” We are that village. If we come together to listen, to question and to explore the way forward, we will find blessing. This is not a solo mission, it is most certainly a community undertaking where every-one has a voice, including our children. We say: l’dor v’dor – from generation to generation; that is our shared strength. My door is open to you. I invite you to

write, call or stop by the school. I want to hear about your experiences as parents, teachers and community members.

With blessings and gratitude, Noreen Leibson

pated in the Jason Schenker Walkathon and generously contributed to the Jason Schenker Memorial Library Fund. Despite the rain and clouds the walk took place and created a very special and warm event. Our thanks to the Grossmans for their continued support for over 19 years, providing snacks along the way. A very special thank you to Becky Green and others who created advance flyers and announcements. As always the Israeli Festival and the special choir performance rounded out the celebration. Again thank you to everyone. Lets plan on sunshine in 2017. Lynn & Karl Schenker

Some in the region and in Israel have begun to imagine a new region-al order of states with like interests such as Turkey, Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. Israel does not want to get involved in the interne-cine warfare among its neighbors but it is very much interested in closer economic integration in the region. Let me give you an example. To facilitate Turkish and European

trade with Jordan and points south a new high speed rail line has been constructed from the port of Haifa to the Jordanian border near Beit She’an. It is said that major funding for the project has come from Saudi Arabia. In anticipation of a major increase in this trade route a massive new port is being built in Haifa, by the Chinese.Another example of the re-align-

ment in the region is the Saudi peace initiative, originally presented as a

Israel In the New Middle East continued…‘take it or leave it’ proposition in 2002 but currently being revived cognizant of Israeli security con-cerns. It is being taken quite seriously by all parties.Interconnectedness fostered by

trade interests and alignment on political issues may foster a new regional strategic block in which the major ‘moderate’ Sunni states and Israel have a lot more in common than not. Representatives from an organization ‘Israel Yozemet’ (or Israel Initiates), chaired by Yuval Rabin, the son of Yitzhak Rabin, described the dedication of their or-ganization to achieving such a goal. Things are certainly being turned

up upside down. The future is not one of stability but a light shines and it may portend a favorable future for Israel.

Member Contact DirectoryHave you ever wanted to contact

another member but you don’t have their updated contact information? Do you still use the hardcopy tribute book that was published a couple years ago for the Community Service Luncheon? The system behind our website allows us to make a similar member directory available online. Your Board of Directors voted to activate this directory effective with the new fiscal year in July. Here’s what you need to know. The directory will only be available

to logged in members. The public will not be able to view member contact information. Members will

have the option to request that their contact information not be avail-able to other members. You will be able to opt out online or to contact the office to opt out. Only adult member names, address, phone numbers, and email address will be viewable. No other information will be made available. Individual fields may be optionally hidden by the member. For example, a member may choose to display their address but hide an unlisted phone number. We understand that some people

may be concerned about privacy and we assure you that we take those concerns seriously which is

why the board discussed and voted on this. We will assist you to opt out if desired. We also know that the information we will be sharing only with fellow TBA members is publically available in local tele-phone books (if you still have one) and various non-TBA online direc-tories. Exporting of the full list is blocked. The directory is intended only for TBA members private use and may not be used for commer-cial, political or other unauthorized purposes. If you have any questions or con-

Opinions

Something to Think AboutIn last month’s bul-

letin, President Mike Harris presented the rendering for the Twelve Tribes stained glass windows for the east wall of our sanctuary. I am excited to tell you we already have sponsors for two windows. We have assurance from the craftsman who fabricates the windows that orders received by the end of July will be installed before Rosh Hashanah 2016.All orders must be paid in full

before fabrication can begin.

We acknowledge that $10,000 is a great deal of money; so we would like you to consider a group option. Do you have a group of like minded friends or relatives who would like to have a permanent memorial or honor for a special person or persons. Consider honoring all of the children in your close circle of friends. Join with your siblings in honoring your parents. There are so many possibilities.A plaque will be placed in the

foyer with the names of donors and honorees. We know that this will be an ongoing project; so the

Elaine Brody

plaque will be different from those already in place. It will be one that will allow for placement of donor acknowledgements as the windows are installed rather than when all are complete. Please feel free to contact me or

Ruth Harris if you have any ques-tions about this project. While, as usual, it is something to

think about…I hope you will choose to think and then, act.Have a great summer!

Education

Were you one of those kids that loved Jewish summer camp? Then this article is for you! Let’s take a walk down memory lane.

What was the best part of camp for you? Getting away from home? Meeting up with friends from last summer? Singing ruach songs out in the woods by the lake? Learning new crafts? Playing sports? Learning birkathamazon by heart? Waiting for care packages from home? Trying new things you would never do at home? Your first summer romance? Being a summer camp counselor at the camp you attended?Everyone has their special stories about Jewish summer camp. And everyone

loves to tell them, especially to their own kids. Well, maybe not all, but many of them. Perhaps you’re sending your kids to the same camp you went to. I’m sure you’ve discovered that the camps all have web sites now, like Camp Ramah in New England, Camp Modin in Maine (the oldest Jewish summer camp in New England!), 6Points URJ summer camps and Camp Tevya, Camp Yavneh, and Camp Young Judea all in NH. These are just a few of the many Jewish summer camps, but maybe one of them is YOUR camp!My Jewish Learning offers a brief history on the institution of Jewish summer camps in the US. It was about

more than getting kids out of cities in the summer and the purposes for Jewish summer camp evolved over time. How did you feel about Jewish summer camp in the years after you at-

tended? If you attended camp in the 1980s, then you’ll enjoy this article at the Tablet: “Thirteen Signs That You May Have Attended Jewish Sum-mer Camp in the 1980s.” I was laughing just looking at the photos in the article. The Huffington Post shares “34 Life Lessons You Learn At Jewish Summer Camp”. Did you learn any of these lessons at camp? And don’t forget to read the comments, too!At The Tower, Aiden Pink wrote the article

“Was My Jewish Summer Camp Trying to Indoctrinate Me?” He shares many of his memories about camp and what he experienced during his camp time. You may find some similarities to your own camping experience. Be sure to check out the link to the results of a Jewish summer camp survey (in the second half of the article). And the answer to the question is yes!Do you know anyone famous who attended Jewish summer camp? Want to guess?

You learned about some of them if you read Pink’s article. If you’re not into guessing, check out “9 famous Jews who attended Jewish summer camp” at the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. So that’s the wrap up for Jewish summer camp memories. I hope you have great memories of your time at Jewish

summer camp! It’s a good thing.
