    Abstract

    Thepurposeofthispaperistoshowthedramaticincreaseintheunemployment

    ratefortheleadingindustriesintheUnitedStates.Thedatainthispaperwillalsocompareandanalyzegenderinconjunctionwiththeseindustriestodeterminewhat

    genderiseffectedthemostbyunemploymentandtowhatmagnitudedoesgender

    haveinunemployment.Thispaperwillconcludethatallindustriessufferwith

    unemploymentandthegendergapvariesdependingontheindustry.

    1.Problemidentification.Statethegeneralproblemtopic

    Thegeneralproblemtopicisontheincreasingunemploymentrateasit

    pertainstogenderandethnicityintodaysleadingworkforceindustries.AnotherproblemisthattherehasnotbeenaneffectivesolutionputforbyeithertheObama

    administrationorBushadministrationthathassuccessfullytackledtheriseinthe

    unemploymentrate.

    ThesecondgeneralproblemwouldbethattheAfricanAmericanracehas

    doubletheunemploymentratethenallotherethnicitiesandinalmostevery

    categoryhasthehighestdeficitofemployedworkingcitizens.13%ofallsingleblack

    AfricanAmericanmalesareunemployedand12%forallAfricanAmericanwomen.

    TheproblemamongAfricanAmericaniscriticalandneedstobeaddressed.

    14.5%ofallAfricanAmericanswhohaveattainedlowerthenahighSchooldiploma

    areunemployedandonly34%ofourAfricanAmericanpopulationisemployedas

    shownintheGraph.Alsoin200910%ofallwidowed,separatedandordivorced

    AfricanAmericanwomenwereunemployed.Thesefactsaloneshowthatthe

    unemploymentrateintheAfricanAmericansocietyisaseriousissue.

    Somechangesthatcouldbemadetohelpalleviatetheproblemisenforcing

    educationbecausethedataalsoshowsthat80%ofAfricanAmericanswhohas

    achievedabachelorsdegreeorhigherareemployed.Alsotheseratesneedtobe

    madepublicandbroughttotheattentionofAfricanAmericansineffortsthatwecan

    eliminatethesehighunemploymentrates.Educationiskeyandifwecankeep

    studentsinschoolandgetthemtofinishcollegethechancesofthembecominga

    statistictounemploymentisextremelylow.

    3.Findings.Describethedatatablesyoulocatedwithreferencestothefollowing

    quantitativeaspect.Youmustlocateatleastonedatatableforeachofthefour

    aspects(i.e.thereisaminimumoffourdatatables.)ThedatamustbeinPDFfile,as

    explainedintheAPPENDIX

    Allofmygraphanddatatablesexplaindifferentaspectstomyresearchand

    providesupportingfactsaboutunemployment.Forexampleoneofmydatatables

    breaksdowntheunemploymentratebyrace,genderandmaritalstatus.While

    anothergraphbreaksdownEmploymentstatusoftheciviliannoninstitutional

    population25yearsandoverbyeducationalattainment,sexandrace.

    Alsoonegraphbreaksdownunemploymentratebyindustry,genderand

    racethereforeitgivesdatatodifferentiateweathermoremalesorfemalesare

    unemployedpertainingtoindustryandrace.Thisdatatablewasusefulin

    determiningwhichraceisbeingaffectedfromunemploymentthemost.Althoughall

    graphsanddatatablesdealwiththegeneraltopicincreasingunemploymentrateas

    itpertainstogenderandethnicityallthedatatablesandgraphshavethereown

    specificpointofinterestandspecification.

    Thesedatatablesprovidevariousinformationtohelpmedeterminewhich

    genderwasactuallyunemployedandtakingeffortstoseekworkforexampleone

    graphshowsthat57.1%ofallwomenunemployedactuallyhavefilledout

    applicationsandsentinresumesthismethodwasusedtodeterminethenumberofjobseekersbetweenthetwogenders.Asformalesonly51.8%ofallunemployed

    maleshavesentinapplicationsandresumes,whichclassifiesthemasunemployed

    jobseekers.

    Furthermoreanotherdatatablebreaksdownunemploymentbygender,

    industry,andclassofworkersoitgivesmoredetailthenmyotherdatatable,which

    specifiesinjustindustry.Thisdatatableexplainsthat8.1%ofwomenare

    unemployedsalaryworkerscomparedto10.8%formen.Howeverthelargest

    unemploymentforgenderbyindustryandclassofworkerwasbeverageand

    tobaccowomenareunemployed17.2%comparedto9.8%formen.

    A).Magnitude

    1.Howlargeorsevereistheproblem

    AsitpertainstounemploymentintheUnitedStatesthedatashowsthatthis

    isanissuethanmustbeaddressed.Themagnitudeofthisproblemhasgrowntobe

    oneofthemostimportantissuesfacingournationtoday.Thepopulationtowhich

    theproblemeffectisnolongerjustAfricanAmericansorHispanicswhiteAmerican

    isalsobecomingastatistictounemploymentbythethousands.

    2.)Howmanypeopledoesitaffect?

    AsIpreviouslystatedthemagnitudeofthisproblemhasgrowntoaffectall

    ethnicitiesandbothgenders.Thedatashowsthatalmost4millionofallhighschool

    graduateswithnocollegeexperienceareunemployed.Also5.8millionwomenare

    separatedandordivorcedandunemployed.Thereforethisproblemisnotjust

    limitedtoraceorgenderbutitisbecomingthemostimportanteconomicissues

    today.

    3.)Whatarethecostsoftheproblemsexpressedinthetermsofmoney.(Morbidity

    ormorality?Dataonmagnitudeareusuallyunivariateandsometimesconsistof

    rankorderList). Theunemploymentrateisdefinitelyoneoftheleadingcausestoourrecent

    recession.TheUnitedStatesgovernmenttreasurydepartmentputsoutmillionsof

    dollarstoserviceunemploymentprogramsandassisttheunemployedinfinding

    work.Thesesameunemployedjobseekersreceivepaymentstohelpthemgetby

    financiallyforatemporaryperiodoftime.Thedatashowsthatthepeoplewho

    madethemostmoneybeforetheywerelaidoffreceivehigherpaymentsfromthe

    federalgovernmentwhileunemployedtomeettherelivingstandardsIassume.

    B.)Scope

    1.)Howwidespreadistheproblem

    Accordingtothedatatheproblemisextremelywidespreaditaffectsevery

    cultureandeverygender.Womenmaybemostaffectedbyunemploymentbutwith

    thesehighnumbersofunemployedAmericanswemustacceptthisasaproblemfor

    everycitizen.Thisproblemhasnolimitsorboundaries.

    2.) What percentages of selected population are affected? (E.g. nations, states,

    regions,etc.)Thesedataareusuallyasratesorratios

    TheAfricanAmericanpopulationisaffectedthemostasIstatedearlierthe

    amountofunemployedAfricanAmericanaredoubledanyotherrace.African

    Americanshavea14.5%unemploymentratecomparedtootherracesaveragingout

    at8.5%.TheunemploymentrateforAfricanAmericanswithabachelorsdegreeor

    higheris7.3%.Whichisequaltootherethnicitiesoverallunemploymentrate.

    C.)Changes:Howhastheproblemvariedorchangedovertime

    Theproblemhaschangeddrasticallyovertimein20085.4percentofwomen

    wereunemployedthisnumberhasskyrocketedto8.1%in2009injust1yearthat

    samepercentagewas4.1in2000.Futhernoreothercategoriesarejustalike

    unemploymentcontinuestoriseacrosstheboardoverthepast5yearsthese

    numbershaveincreasedtonumbersandpercentssohighevenpresidentObama

    hadtoputunemploymentonhisagenda.

    D.)Disparities:Aretheredifferencesintheproblemintermsrace,age,SES,sexual

    orientation,ordisability?

    ThebiggestdisparitieswaswithAfricanAmericansIassumebecauseofthe

    dropoutrateitultimatelyresultsinstudentsnotbeingabletofindjobsbecausethe

    marketissolimitedforsomeonewithoutevenahighschooldiploma.Therefore

    theyfallintotheunemploymentpoolwhichbacksmyargumentIstatedatfirstthat
