The leaders were abusive of their authority – (v. 1-4) They loved the praises of men (v. 5-12) An impediment to others entering into the kingdom

(v. 13). They were religious but yet unjust in their conduct

(v. 14). They were a bad influence on new converts (v. 15). They were foolish and blind in religious duties (v. 16-

22). They lacked judgment, mercy and faith (v. 23). They magnified the petty errors of others while

overlooking the beam in their own eyes. (v. 24; cf Mat 7:1-4).

Externally they were meticulously religious, while internally very wicked (vs. 25-28).

Praised the martyred prophets, but persecuted Christ and his apostles (vs. 29-32).

thank You that I am not like other men--extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this

tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess. . . .
