Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Joseph Cathedral:

Each year, parishes in the Diocese of San Jose participate in the Mission Cooperative. Through this annual collection we are made aware of the needs of dioceses and religious congre-gations which serve heroically despite challenges we do not face here in the Diocese of San José.

Today, we welcome Fr. Richard Catanach from the Diocese of Las Cruces. The Diocese of Las Cruces encompasses vast regions of southern New Mexico. The diocese is largely rural and serves many areas scarred by poverty and limited by lack of opportunities. The diocese lacks sufficient priests and re-sources to adequately meet the many needs of the community.

On a personal note, it is great to see Fr. Catanach again. We attended New Mexico State University together and were both active in St. Albert the Great Newman Center. Fr. Cata-nach is pastor of Holy Cross Parish in Las Cruces and has also served the diocese as its vicar general.

I look forward to reconnecting with him and learning of the ongoing ministry in the Diocese of las Cruces.

Warmly,

Fr. Joseph Benedict, Pastor

Atentamente,

P. Joseph Benedict, Párroco

Treasures from our Tradition This past Thursday’s solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was born in the Eastern Church. It is a gift from the ancient Church of Jerusalem, a commemoration of the death of Mary, and a feast charged with a deep sense of the Resurrection. Mary, the first disciple, is the first to share fully in Christ’s victo-ry over death. In the tradition of the East, August 15 is the “Dormition of the Theotokos,” or the “Falling Asleep of the God‑bearer.” There is no shadow of death or gloom in the theolo-gy, since this is seen as a transformation of Mary’s life into a heavenly and immortal existence. There is a sense in the tradition that she who made earth heavenly and exalted the human race by her faithfulness is glorified today. A persistent legend among Or-thodox Christians tells how all the disciples, except Thomas, who was preaching in India, were present at Mary’s death and burial, and sat by the tomb for three days. On the third day, Thomas saw Mary’s body rising to heaven. She greeted him as “my friend,” and he was escorted by angels to proclaim her assumption to the others, who then realized her tomb was empty. Thus Thomas, the one who expressed doubt at the resurrection of Christ, received a gift from Mary: the chance to proclaim resurrection faith to the disciples. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Jesus will be the first to experience the distress of the coming judgment. His bap-tism will be the conflict into which he will be immersed as he approaches Jerusalem and his death on the cross. His followers will not be spared. The angels at Jesus'

birth proclaimed peace on earth, and Simeon, holding the baby Jesus in the Temple, said to God: “Master, now you may let your servant go in peace.” Here Jesus tells the crowd not to think he has come to bring peace; he has come to bring division. Simeon said as much when he turned to Mary and said that the child was destined for the rise and fall of many and to be a sign that will be contradicted. Peace is the ultimate end of the Kingdom of God, but peace has a price. Jesus is warning the crowd that wherever the Word of God is heard and acted upon, division occurs. Fathers will be divided against sons and mothers against daughters. The coming judg-ment forces us to look at the implications of our com-mitments. As Jesus warned in last Sunday's Gospel, a commitment of faith requires us to change our attitude toward material possessions and to take even more seri-ously our moral responsibilities. Here he reminds the crowd that those who commit to him will find it affects the way they relate to friends and family members. The angel who announced the birth of John the Baptist to Zechariah said John would go before Jesus to turn the hearts of fathers toward their children. But a commit-ment to Jesus forces us to change the way we live our lives, and this can put strains on relationships. We don't expect to hear such difficult words from Jesus in the Gospel. But it is good to be reminded once in awhile that the decision to do the right thing, the good thing, is not always easy and without conflict. Jesus himself did not make easy decisions and avoid conflict. Today he reminds his followers to be prepared for difficult deci-sions and conflict as well. Loyola Press

S aint of the Week Saint Louis of Toulouse February 9, 1274 – August 19, 1297 Louis’s parents were Charles II of Naples and Sici-

ly, and Mary, daughter of the King of Hungary. Louis was related to Saint Louis IX on his father’s side and to Eliza-beth of Hungary on his mother’s side. ouis showed early signs of attachment to prayer and to the corporal works of mercy. As a child he used to take food from the castle to feed the poor. When he was 14, Louis and two of his broth-ers were taken as hostages to the king of Aragon’s court as part of a political deal involving Louis’s father. At the court, Louis was tutored by Franciscan friars under whom he made great progress both in his studies and in the spir-itual life. Like Saint Francis he developed a special love for those afflicted with leprosy. While he was still a hostage, Louis decided to renounce his royal title and become a priest. When he was 20, he was allowed to leave the king of Aragon’s court. He renounced his title in favor of his brother Robert and was ordained the next year. Very short-ly after, he was appointed bishop of Toulouse, but the pope agreed to Louis’s request to become a Franciscan first. The Franciscan spirit pervaded Louis. Even as a bishop he

wore the Franciscan habit and sometimes begged. He as-signed a friar to offer him correc-tion—in public if necessary—and the friar did his job. Louis’s ser-vice to the Diocese of Toulouse was richly blessed. In no time he was considered a saint. Louis set aside 75 percent of his income as bishop to feed the poor and main-tain churches. Each day he fed 25 poor people at his table. Louis was canonized in 1317 by Pope John XXII, one of his former teachers. His Liturgical Feast Day is August 19. When Cardinal Hugolino, the future Pope Grego-ry IX, suggested to Francis that some of the friars would make fine bishops, Francis protested that they might lose some of their humility and simplicity if appointed to those positions. Those two virtues are needed everywhere in the Church, and Louis shows us how they can be lived out by bishops.

Fr. Victor’s Trip to México

This past week we went to the state of Michoacan.

Other than having some excellent ice cream, Micho-

acan has some of the most beautiful Churches I have

ever seen. The first photo is from inside the Basílica

de Nuestra Señora de la Salud in the city of Pátzcuaro.

The other is outside of the Cathedral in Morelia. What

impressed me so much was not just the size but just

the amount of details they have.

This is my last week here in Mexico before returning

to San Jose. I reflected on a couple of things: what I

learned, what to take away from here, and what God

was calling me here to do. Ten years ago I would nev-

er have guessed I’d be in a situation like this: being

ordained a Catholic priest and living in Mexico learn-

ing Spanish. Mexico certainly does have its rough

parts. But for me, it’s also important to find beauty

everywhere you go. I remember my parents taking me

to the Philippines as a child and seeing both extremes.

There’s beauty in places you would never expect, and

here in Mexico, I had the chance to fall in love with its

beauty and grow closer to God in a land not my own.

I’m still not quite sure what God was calling me to do

here, but I look forward to whatever comes next. See

you soon!
