DOG PRE-ADOPTION HOUSING

RENOVATION PROJECT

Page 2: Dog Pre-Adoption Renovation Project

One of the few areas of our shelter that fell outside the scope of our recent remodel is the pre-adoption dog housing room.

This area of the shelter is extremely outdated and the design of the caging contributes to an increase in stress that exacerbates existing behavior and medical problems and causes the dogs to stay at the shelter for longer periods of time for treatment.

The 1,200 square foot expansion will be added to the north side of the existing shelter.

The shelter broke ground on the dog pre-adoption renovation in December 2015. The scheduled completion date is estimated to be early May.

The expanded and renovated space will allow Anderson Animal Shelter to serve more animals and provide for more appropriate housing options for canines during their stay with us.

Anderson Animal Shelter collaborates with overcrowded, under-resourced shelters, accepting adult dogs and puppies into our adoption program as space permits. We also accept locally relinquished animals from animal control and police agencies as well as from owners who can no longer keep them.

In 2015, we accepted over 2,500 animals which represented more than a 90% increase over the previous year.

Our current caging consists almost entirely

of 4’x8’ kennels which are designed to

house large dogs. Small dogs are often

overwhelmed when housed in this size

kennel and this contributes to their stress.

The reduction of stress in a shelter environment is an important component of animal

health. Healthier animals get adopted into their forever homes more quickly,

allowing us to accept more animals into our shelter, and save more lives thus

assisting our partner agencies as well as our local community.
