NJ has a law known as the Viciousand Potentially Dangerous Dog Act.

This law helps figure out if the dog isvicious or dangerous Vicious dog aredescribed as dogs the have killed or

caused severe bodily injury tosomeone. If the dog was provoked it

cannot be marked as vicious. Apotentially dangerous dog is a couplenotches below a vicious dog. Instead

of euthanizing the dog, the ownersmust follow regulations.

If a dog is determined to be vicious, they will

be euthanized.

However, if the dog is marked as vicious, the

owners of the dog still have a chance to

appeal. They have a chance to present their

case and save the dog,

Most likely the dog will be impounded after the attackwhile they investigate the case. The dog maybequarantined if there is question of the history of the rabiesvaccination. The dog may also be impounded if the ownersmake an appeal.

If it is determined the dog needs to be put down, it is forpublic safety. Hopefully, this is not the outcome and can beresolved without euthanasia.
