HELLO PARENTS! CONFERENCE TIME! 615 Fairview Avenue Lancaster, PA 17603 (717) 291-6252 ext. 117 [email protected] Does your child need to practice reading or retelling? Read to Me Hotline Number: (717) 723 - 8412 With parental permission, your child may call the “Read to Me” Hotline. I personally created this special number to allow children to call to practice their fluency and comprehension skills. It is 100% safe and all calls go directly to me! When students call, their call will go straight to the voice mailbox that I created. They can record their fluent reading or discuss their book for as long as they may need. Please call or email me with any questions! When your child calls, please be sure they speak clearly and say: - first and last name - grade - title of the book the are reading or retelling - If reading the book they should say: “I am practicing fluency by reading this book to you.” Then begin reading. - If retelling the book they should say: I am practicing my comprehension skills by retelling this book to you.” Then begin retelling. How to know if children understand phonics skills? They will: • Know consonant sounds • Know that a, e, i, o, and u are vowels. • Know sounds of digraphs. Example: /sh/ in shell. • Know sounds of consonant blends. Example: /bl/ in block and /str/ in string. • Know short vowel word families. Example: at, an, op, on, it, in. • Break words into syllables. • Find familiar words within unknown words. Example: mat in matter. • Substitute or add letters to make new words. Example: When asked to take away the letter t in the word tan, can the child say the word is an? Can the child put the letter t on an to make the word ant? What can you do to help your child? • Play “I spy” with phonics skills • Learn phonics with letter sound cards • Learn about phonics by sorting! Krystle L.
