Dodge The Cones Set Up Set 2 lines of 8 -10 cones in a straight line or slightly of set with enough space between each cone so that players can come out of each dodge and gather themselves before heading into the next cone. Dodge The ConesSet Up• Set 2 lines of 8 -10 cones in a straight line or slightly of set with

enough space between each cone so that players can come out of each dodge and gather themselves before heading into the next cone.

• Review each of the 3 dodges (face, split and dodge)• Start the players off• After the first player hits the second cone the next player goes

What To Look For• Each player wants to make his dodge BEFORE he gets to each

Ground Balls Around The GoalSet Up

• Place roughly a dozen balls at the top of the restraining line.

• Form a line to the right or left of the coach.

• Roll the ball towards the goal slightly to one side.

• Players are not to leave the side of the coach until the ball is sent out.

• You can place a cone or a checker at X behind the goal to add a dodge or different dynamic to the drill.

What To Look For

• Players are to scoop the ground ball as it rolls away from them on the run with their inside hand at point 1

• Once a player scoops the ball they transfer the stick to the outside hand and run around the crease.

• As a player rounds the crease and heads back up to the line they need to throw the ball to the coach on the run and get back in the line at point 2.

• Make sure players are throwing the ball at least 15 yards on the run.

• A good measure is that kids should not throw the ball much past the Goal Line Extended (GLE).

• Half way through switch the line to the opposite side of the coach and reverse the drill.

• This drill should be almost constant action.

• This is one of my favorite drills

• MAKE SURE KIDS KNOW NOT TO JUST THROW THE BALL AT YOU WITHOUT YOU LOOKING AT THEM!!!

What We Want To Get Out Of This

• Scooping ground balls on the run.

• Keep your feet moving once you pick the ball up.

• Getting the ball out of your stick once you have run to space.

• We want players to keep their heads up as they run with the ball to be able to find the outlet pass.

Box Out DrillSet Up• Pair players up with equal ability• Each pair needs one ball• Place a ball on the ground a few feet in front of P1• P2 stands directly behind P1

What To Look For• P1 wants to take a wide stance with 2 hands on the

stick• The coach blows the whistle or starts the drill• P2 works his hardest to get around P1 in order to

scoop up the ground ball• P1 must work hard to box out P2 until the coach

blows the whistle a second time• At the second whistle P1 scoops through the GB and

runs to space• If P2 gets around P1 at any time he runs through the

GB and runs to space

What We Want To Get Out Of This• Effort is the key to this drill especially from P2• We want to make each drill very competitive• We also want to see pursuit from P2 after the

second whistle forcing P1 to use correct GB technique and forcing him to run to space after he picks up the GB

• These should last about 10 seconds per go

1 vs. 1 Ground BallsSet Up• The coach needs to get 2 lines of players, one to

What To Look For• The coach wants to roll the ball out in front of players

about 5-10 yards• Players need to keep their eyes forward and react to

the key that the coach determines• Players want to battle for position and get to the ball

ahead of their opponent• Once a player scoops the GB he must run to space

and keep his feet moving as he looks to move the ball back to the coach

• The player that does not win the GB must pursue the winner of the drill and work to get the ball back.

• Never quit on this drill

2 vs. 1 Ground Balls Straight AheadSet Up• The coach needs to get 3 lines of players slightly ahead of

him so that players cannot see when the ball is thrown• Each coach would need about 10-12 balls for this drill• Lines should rotate from P1 to P2 to P3 to P1

What To Look For• The coach wants to roll the ball out in front of players about

5-10 yards• Players need to keep their eyes forward and react to the key

that the coach determines• P1 and P3 are on the same team• P2 is the solo player in this drill• Players want to battle for position and get to the ball ahead of

their opponent• Once a player scoops the GB he must run to space #1 and

keep his feet moving with his head up as he looks to move the ball back to the player on his team #2

• Once they complete a pass they move the ball quickly back to the coach

• The player that does not win the GB must pursue the winner of the GB and work to get the ball back.

so that players cannot see when the ball is thrown• Each coach would need about 10-12 balls for this drill• Lines should rotate from P1 to P2 to P3 to P1

What To Look For• The coach wants to roll the ball out in front of players about 5-10

yards• Players need to keep their eyes forward and react to the key

that the coach determines• P1 and P3 are on the same team• P2 is the solo player in this drill• P3 should be the first player to the ball.• It is P1’s responsibility to alert P3 of where P2 is in relation so

he doesn’t have to look backward• Once a player scoops the GB he must run to space and keep

each side and slightly ahead of him so that players cannot see when the ball is thrown

• Each coach would need about 10-12 balls for this drill

What To Look For• The coach wants to roll the ball out in front of players

about 5-10 yards• Players need to keep their eyes forward and react to

the key that the coach determines• Players want to battle for position and get to the ball

ahead of their opponent• Once a player scoops the GB he must run to space

and keep his feet moving as he looks to move the ball back to the coach working to stay away from the double team

• The players that do not win the GB must pursue the winner of the drill and work to get the ball back.

players at least 10 yards apart depending on age or ability.

• This is a better drill for younger players or new players

What To Look For• The coach wants to instruct using proper throwing

technique• Twist and Wrist • We want players to throw the ball somewhat hard

and not lob the passes to one another• Players need to keep their sticks vertical upon

catching the pass• Passing should be right to right, left to left and catch

switch throw• This is a fairly basic drill

What We Want To Get Out Of This• We want to get repetitions up in this drill• Pairs should be able to get about 10 passes in a row

until one drop.• We want players to increase their overall stickwork

with this drill

players at least 10 yards apart depending on age or ability.

• This is a better drill for young players or players with a better skill set than a beginner might have.

What To Look For• The coach wants to instruct using proper throwing

technique• Twist and Wrist • We want players to throw the ball somewhat hard

and not lob the passes to one another• Players need to keep their sticks vertical upon

catching the pass• Players should catch with their inside hand and

throw with their outside hands• This is a fairly basic drill but can keep kids moving

and helps them learn to throw and catch on the run

What We Want To Get Out Of This• We want to get repetitions up in this drill• We want players to increase their overall stickwork

with this drill• We want players to become more comfortable

catching and throwing on the run

Partner Passing BreakawaysSet Up• The coach of this drill wants to set up pairs of players at the

center cone.• Place 2 other cones 15 yards apart in a row• This is a better drill for older players or developing players

What To Look For• The coach wants to instruct using proper throwing technique• Twist and Wrist • We want players to throw the ball somewhat hard and not lob

the passes to one another• P1 starts with the ball and carries it to the cone on his side• Once he gets to the cone he pivots hard and heads back to the

center cone• P2 starts to move away from P1 creating space• P1 throws the ball to P2 who catches the ball over his shoulder

and then sprints to the cone on his end of the drill and repeats the process

• Each player after passing needs to return to center cone and await the pass from his partner

• This can be right or left handed passing or groundballs away

What We Want To Get Out Of This• We want to get repetitions up in this drill• Pairs should be able to get about 10 passes in a row until one

drop.• Player need to chase the ball if they drop the ball• We want players to increase their overall stickwork with this drill

Triangle PassingSet Up• Place 3 cones about 15 yards apart in a triangle• Set up can be for as little as 4 players and up to 12• Fill lines in evenly• Place at least 3 extra balls at each line as the ball will drop

What To Look For• The coach wants to instruct using proper throwing technique• Twist and Wrist • We want players to throw the ball somewhat hard and not lob

the passes to one another• Each line must stay spread out as spacing is important• Each player must move to the passer with his stick in the

outside hand• Once the pass is caught the player rolls to the outside protecting

his stick and switches to his outside hand again and throw on the run

• After halfway through reverse the motion of the ball.• If there are 3-4 players in each line use 2 balls to keep

repetitions high• If a player misses a pass he needs to hustle to get the loose ball

What We Want To Get Out Of This• We want to get repetitions up in this drill• We want to work on footwork and keep our sticks to the outside• Player need to chase the ball if they drop the ball• We want players to increase their overall stickwork with this drill

Line Drills With Coach/Passer in the MiddleSet Up• Set up 2 lines about 30 yards apart with about 3-4 players in each line• The coach in the middle MUST have good stickwork so you want

someone with experience• Place at least 3 extra balls at each line as the ball will drop

What To Look For• The coach wants to instruct using proper throwing technique• Twist and Wrist • We want players to throw the ball somewhat hard and not lob the

passes to one another• Each line must stay spread out as spacing is important• We can do right handed passing, left handed passing, over the shoulder

passing, groundballs in or groundballs away from this drill set up• Players need to catch and throw on the run• We want to encourage players to make longer passes by NOT carrying

Triangle Passing With One Man InsideSet Up• Set up a players about 15 yards apart in a triangle with one

player in the middle• Place at least 1 extra ball with each player on the outside

What To Look For• Start the drill with only 2 players on the outside having a ball,

which will leave one player on the outside without a ball.• The first pass should come from P1 to P4 at #1• Once P4 catches the ball P3 must call for his help and P4 must

move his feet and throw the ball to P3 #2 with his outside hand• Once that pass is made the other player on the outside with a

ball, P2, must communicate to P4 that he has the ball and P4 must break to the player and catch the pass #3

• P1, who now has no ball, must call for help to P4 and P4 needs to throw to P1 #4

• Be careful that the player inside does not simply run in a circle which would be easy to do

• P4 must cut and move in different directions to use both hands.• Each player makes 10 passes and catches in this drill and then

they switch positions

What We Want To Get Out Of This• We want to get repetitions up in this drill• We want to work on footwork and keep our sticks to the outside• We want players to continuously switch their hands• Players on the outside must keep their feet moving as well and

catch, switch then throw the ball• Player need to chase the ball if they drop the ball• We want players to increase their overall stickwork with this drill

Star DrillSet Up• Set up 5 lines of players around the goal. • Each line should be outside of the restraining lines of the box to

maintain spacing• It is important for players not to creep in, they need to fight

gravity

What To Look For• Start the balls with P1• Each line needs to skip the line to their right• Players want to catch the ball with their inside hand and then

switch to their outside hand• You can pass in this drill or use groundballs• Each player has to follow his pass• You can add a shot from P5 to the goal to add a twist to the drill• IF YOU DO ADD A SHOT MAKE SURE P1 IS WELL TO THE

SIDE OF THE GOAL• The drill can be reversed• Use multiple balls in order get repetitions higher

What We Want To Get Out Of This• We want to get repetitions up in this drill• We want to work on footwork and keep our sticks switching from

the inside hand to the outside hand• We want players to continuously switch their hands• Players must keep their feet moving as well and catch, switch

then throw the ball• Player need to chase the ball if they drop the ball• We want players to increase their overall stickwork with this drill

Shooting From Up Top Cone Weave

Set Up• Set up 1 line of players about 5 yards outside of the top of the

box or 25 yards from the goal • Set up 5 cones about 2 yards apart from one another in a line

directly in front of the goal starting 25 yards from the GLE• Place 20 balls to the side of the goal roughly 5 yards wide and 5

yards in front of the goal on both sides

What To Look For• P1 will start with a ball and will dodge through the cones using

to the crease and shoot with the outside hand• Once the player has shot they want to peel off to the same side

Sweep Shooting Across The TopSet Up• Set up 2 lines of players about 5 yards outside of the top of the

box or 25 yards from the goal at the side of the restraining box• Set up 1 cone about 12 yards directly in front of the goal starting• Place 20 balls to the side of the goal roughly 5 yards wide and 5

yards in front of the goal on both sides

What To Look For• P1 will start with a ball and will dodge toward the cone using

Shooting Down The AlleySet Up• Set up 2 lines of players about 5 yards outside of the top of the

box or 25 yards from the goal toward the middle of the restraining box

• Set up 2 cone about 17 yards directly in front of the goal and 2 cones a bit wider 12 yards in front of the goal

• Place 20 balls to the side of the goal roughly 5 yards wide and 5 yards in front of the goal on both sides

What To Look For• P1 will start with a ball and will dodge toward the first cone using

their inside hand and use either face, split or roll dodge• After coming off the first cone the player wants to dodge tangent to

Shooting From The WingsSet Up• Set up 2 lines of players at the edge of the box at the GLE• Set up 2 cone about 17 yards wide of the GLE • Place another 2 cones about 7 yards up and 7 yards out from

the pipes• Place 40 balls right in the center of the field about 10 yards

above the GLE

What To Look For• P1 will start with a ball and carry the ball towards the back of the

goal to the first cone• After coming off the first cone the player wants to curl around

the second cone and come tangent to the crease• Once the player has shot they want to peel off and keep the

What To Look For• The coach needs to designate each line as either 1 or 2• The coach will roll a ball into play and give a 2 digit number• Line 1 will represent the first digit• Line 2 will represent the second digit• There for if the coach calls 22 then it will be a 2 vs. 2 with the

line that picks up the ball on offense• If the coach calls 32 then Line 1 sends 3 players and Line 2

sends 2 and it is a 3 vs. 2• The team that picks up the ball has to make 1 fewer pass than

Cornell DrillSet Up• Set up 3 lines of offensive players. One at the top of the whole

and one at each side of the net about 5 yards above the GLE• Set up 1 line of defensive players about 3 yards to the side of

the goal on either side of the crease.• Place a dozen balls at the front of the line of defensemen.• Start with one defenseman in the drill playing “O1”• Defensive players will either recycle back to the Defensive or

Offensive lines.• Rotate Offensive Players from Line 1 to 2 to 3 so each player is

forced to play different positions with different hands.What To Look For• D2 will initiate the drill by ALWAYS throwing the ball to O1.• D2 will then enter the drill by playing as the 2 defenseman.• Once the ball is thrown to the offense the drill is a 3 vs. 2 drill

with the offensive players moving the ball to find the open man and work to find an open shot in close.
