MORE THAN A WINDOW, LUMICENE IS A LIVING AREA

Unlike a balcony or a veranda, LUMICENE is an inherent part ofyour living area. It extends your apartment by integrating it with the balcony area. The apartment becomes centralised around the LUMICENE which is not only an Inside/Outside interface but also links the kitchen, hall and living room. In this way, LUMICENE provides structure to the whole area.

Neither a bow-window, veranda nor terrace, LUMICENE is a cir-cular balcony area, redefining the link between the inside and the outside.

ADVANTAGES 7.

Page 10: Documentation_house

With LUMICENE, you are not simply inside or outside, but are able to switch between both, giving great flexibility depending on the light and weather conditions.

PROTECTION FROM THE SUN

Based on «green» principles and sustainabledevelopment, LUMICENE is the only bioclimatic structure of its type on the market today. The different positions optimise the suns warmth and our comfort.

By optimising the buildings’ thermal inertia and with dynamicventilation, LUMICENE helps create a «low energy home».

LUMICENE absorbs the sunsenergy all day, warming the room by the glass-house effect.

The panels are on the inside. The glass surfaces are then in theshade to stop over-heating.

By using the optional externalshutters the thermal comfort isfurther improved.

LUMICENE is a room in its own right. The most popular model is the 4000 which is 11.5 m2 and is normally used as a dining area..

The various LUMICENE diameters enable it to be used for lounges, pools and spas.

A true bioclimatic house must take into account the management and impact of both the sun and the wind.

Thanks to its variable panel positioning, LUMICENE meets this need. It provides wind protection from all directions.

ADVANTAGES 11.

Adaptability

Wind Protection

Page 14: Documentation_house

Thanks to its 3 point locking system and its curved glass (optionally laminated), LUMICENE provides an anti-intrusion security level far superior to a classic flat sliding panel.

User manuals are not needed as operation is intuitive. Open a lock each end and the sliding panels can be freely positioned.

TECHNICAL NOTES 32.

Page 35: Documentation_house

LUMICENE has curved glass panels running on two circular, concentric rails, top andbottom - all independent of each other. The external rail also acts as a sill. Theinside rail is completely recessed into thefloor finish and the concrete base. The top rail is simply a guide - it does not support the weight of the panels which slide on the bottom rail. It does, however, support the false ceiling which is necessary for both aesthetic and constructional reasons.

LUMICENE : AN INDUSTRIAL PRODUCT

All the aluminium profiles have beenspecifically engineered for LUMICENE.The circular top rail is manufacturedusing numeric process control, ensuringmillimeter precision - an essential property for a smooth sliding action. A patentedthermal barrier has been developed forthe curved profile.

The St Gobain signature guarantees the high performance glass. This is 16mm, laminated, low emission, argon filled as standard.

Introduction

LUMICENE is a standard industrial product

It is delivered in a wooden case.

It essentially consists of - a lower rail fixed to the floor - uprights assembled on site - an upper rail suspended from the floor above - between 4 and 6 panels, depending on the diameter

INSTALLATION 39.

Page 42: Documentation_house

LUMICENE is fixed to the cement floor. An extension to the floor slab is all that is needed.

It is not recommended that the extension shape follows that of the LUMICENE as any errors will be very visible.

The traditional window support moulding is not made until after the bottom rail is fixed as this avoids complex shuttering.

The bottom rail is supported by variable-height screw adjusters covering a range of 18cm.

POUR LA LARGEUR DE 30

Floor slab

In order to meet water run-off standards, the height of the finished outside surface must be at least 6cm below the inside finished surface. For this reason, we recommend that the raw base be 15cm below to allow for outside surface finishes and to avoid blocking the LUMICENE drain holes.

LUMICENE axis

Tight, circular ter-race shape (not recommended)

Wider circular terrace shape

Rectangular terrace shape : recommended

Rough floor to be at least 15cm lower than finished floor

For the 303,403,503 and 603 cm widths, the dimensions are overall.

The dimensional tolerance must be respected at + or - 1cm.

INSTALLATION 41.

Page 44: Documentation_house

A pre-fabricated concrete beam is used to make a balcony covering the LUMICENE.This beam is not part of the structure. It is simply incorporated into the building in order to provide dimensional accuracy. We strongly recommend that the concrete be poured in situ as any errors could be a major problem.

The beam is equipped all around with a «Stabox» to enable it to be fixed at the same time as the floor is poured.

The floor loading must take into account the counter-weight force of the beam (1 Ton)

The beam is centralised with the floor slab and simply pushed against the wall - it is supported totally by the wall.

The height between the floor and the beam must be precise: 220 or 245cm.

The beam should be ordered from the manufacturer as soon as the build is started. (See page 59)

Page 46: Documentation_house

The aluminium balcony kit is suitable for new and renovation builds in order to:- simplify site work- work with just one supplier- guaranty the end result- avoid thermal bridges

The build is particularly simple as it is restricted to a «garage-door» type of wall opening and lintel.

In addition to fixing four beams to the wall, it involves:- a welded aluminium roof complete with thermal insulation- a lacquered, curved aluminium beam in RAL colours- a PVC under-face to join to the LUMICENE.- a lacquered, aluminium security guard rail- pressure-treated decking NB: The water down pipes can either be outside (provide the size with the order) or inside the covering.

Straight forward installation. the dimensions must be respected to ensure that the top rail does not interfere with the lintels.

Panelling is used for the under-facing (not provided by LUMICENE).

We recommend that the exterior floor level under the LUMICENE be 15cm lower to create the bottom rail water run-off.

If a transversal lintel is not required for the house structure, it is not needed for the LUMICENE.

The roof kit is suitable either for a renovation, where minimum load can be accepted, or for a new build, when access to the balcony above is not required.

This method is simple and ensures a high quality finish.

The kit is comprised of 3 or 4 supports (depending on the LUMICENE diameter) which are fixed to the lintel, and a lacquered, curved aluminium beam.

In terms of building work, a concrete floor height (finished floor + base) is needed and a slab consisting of two supports and a lintel. (Other materials can be used - please contact us)

The lintel height must be at least 40cm to enable the roof kit to be mounted. In most cases, a 225cm height LUMICENE is used. In which case a height of 275cm is needed. If this is not available, please contact us : a reduced height roof is possible.

The roof support is a structure which carries the LUMICENE top rail, in order to ensure a good finish between the roof and the LUMICENE, and also the light roof frame.

This method is suitable for both renovation and new builds.

The kit consists of 4 metal supports which are fixed to the lintel and a curved, thick steel band to carry the weight and also a PVC finishing strip.

LUMICENE can provide details of approved suppliers of the pre-fabricated beams which require accurate dimensional tolerances.

BEAM DELIVERY

LUMICENE can provide prices and terms for delivery of the beam to the building site.Unloading equipment will be required and should be organised by the customer.

The beam must be checked for damage by the transporter and a signed receipt is required as proof of delivery.

INSTALLATION 59.

Page 62: Documentation_house

FALSE CEILING

The LUMICENE ceiling (225cm or 250cm) is generally lower than the rest of the room. This not only defines the LUMICENE space but, from a technical point of view, enables wider building tolerances to be used.It also enables a transversal support beam and insulation to be incorporated. The ceiling is made of plaster board mounted on standard metal framing.

UNDER-FLOOR HEATING

LUMICENE units are designed for use with hot water or electric under-floor heating. The lower rail is mounted on screw-jacks which allow the insulation and heating elements to pass easily underneath.

LIGHTING

The false ceiling enables built-in lighting to be used.It is recommended that a variable power switch be used and that the lights be positioned in a circle, corresponding to the size of table to be used. This avoids shadows in the plates during meals.

FLOOR FINISH

The LUMICENE space is suitable for many floor finishes - typically tiles and carpets.Differentiating the LUMICENE space can produce great results.
