Course Competency RecordThe Farm Business and Production ManagementProgram curriculum has been organized and stateda3 competency based instruction. C.B.I. is definedas an organizational structure of learning/teachingwhich requires description in advance of theknowledge, skills, and attitudes that a student mustpossess upon exit from the program or course.
This instructional tool has been developed to assiststudents and instructors as part of the individual on-farm activity to answer four basic questions whichwill evaluate educational progress.
I. What competencies need to be addressed?2. What criteria should be considered?3. What evidence can be examined to determine
achievement?4. What level of attainment has been achieved?
The criteria listed for each competency indicates astandard of performance. The evaluation statementindicates suggested evidence of achievement basedupon a scale of attainment. This is an ongoingeducational process that should be viewedperiodically over the year the course is taught.
UTILIZATION DIRECTIONSIn order to evaluate the progress of Farm Businessand Production Management students, a list ofselected competencies have been documci ited. Thislist is to serve as i guide of skills and attitudes whichshould be accomplished over the year-long course. The concept of making students aware of the need, adequately discussing and answering relatedquestions will lead toward a level of knowledge thatshould support the student confidence to try toimplement the competency. Further usage of theknowledge and skills of the competency will result inits adaptation and mastery.
Form Definitions:Awareness (1st Stage): The student is
congnizant that the concepts exist limitedunderstandii.g -- no application. Awareness willprobably be introduced in the formal classroom;however, a student may be given advanced standingfor prior experience with the competency if thestudent demonstrates awareness responses.
Adequately Discussed/Questioned (2ndStage). The student participated actively inclassroom and individualized learning, developing anunderstaning of the basic concepts. Student is ableto respond to questions with correct answers.Adequately discussing and questions will also be amajor part of the formal classroom activity; however, specific training and questioning could beaccomplished during individualized one-on-oneinstruction. Instructor and student interact to reach aminimal level of understanding.
Knowledgeable (3rd Stage). The studentis able to manage knowledge in order to makedecisions concerning competency and plan forapplication. This stage is reached when the studentcan relate to the understanding of the informationand the student can explain its importance. This willbe determined during one-on-one contactaddressing the competency.
Attempted Application (4th Stage). Thestudent has made an effort to implement the studiedcompetency by making application in his cwnbusiness. This stage is reached when evidence canbe furnished illustrating that the student has madethe first effort to implement the competency byphysical evidence and skill demonstrated by thestudent to the instructor while at the farm businessduring one-on-one contact.
Adopted/Mastered (5th Stage). Thestudent demonstrates successful repeatedapplication of the competency. This stage is reachedwhen the student demonstrates repeated usage, adaptation and performance of the competency
Developed in cooperation with State VTAE Farm Business and Production Mangement Instructors.
