THE CURRICULUM CABINET
The Curriculum Cabinet was formed in 1984 to provide a means to recognize and use thespecialized skills, talents and perspectives of the content area professional associations inAlaska. The Department of Education was involved in a new State School Board initiativeto develop model curriculum guides in eleven major subject areas. Related regulations hadbeen passed to ensure a strong relationship between curriculum, instructional practice andassessment. The Cabinet structure provided for direct, realistic input in the curriculumdevelopment process and related activities. Presidents of thirteen major professionaleducational associations in Alaska make-up the membership of the cabinet.

The purpose of the Cabinet is to advise the Department of Education in matters relating tocurriculum, instruction, and assessment. The Department in turn supports the Cabinetassociations by providing a Department staff member to act as liaison to promoteassociation goals and activities that address statewide needs. Department support createsopportunities for inter-disciplinary conferences and activities through biannual Cabinetmeetings, offers direct leadership training to the association presidents, supplies smallamounts of funding to collect association input into curriculum and instructional materialsunderway in the Department, and gives increased visibility and credibility to the associationfor networking.
The spirit of collaboration born with the Cabinet is energizing, positive, and enriching.Together the Cabinet, the thousands of Alaska educators who belong to member professionalassociations, and Department of Education staff have begun a momentum focused onstrengthening the education of Alaska children.
It was the consensus of the Cabinet at the October 1986 meeting, that membership inprofessional organizations should be actively encouraged by administrators as a means ofprofessional growth. Encouraging newly hired teachers to become active in professionalorganizations is a common area of focus.
