One of the newest and mostpromising developments in arch-itecture has been the use oflightweight structures for encap-sulating space. Using this newtechnology, we can encloselarge and small areas at a frac-tion of the cost of conventionalconstruction, while at the sametime providing interior spacethat is totally flexible.

The Shaver Partnership hasbeen deeply involved in theresearch and development oflightweight structures over thepast 10 years. During this dec-ade, the concept of lightweightstructures has moved into theforefront of architectural design. This brochure shows some of theways in which The Shaver Part-nership has used this new tech-nology to serve the interests ofits clients.

The Eugene Closson Physical Edu-cation Facility of Grace land College,Lamoni, Iowa, is one example of thesuccessful use of a lightweightstructure to solve a specific problem. The college needed a fieldhousethat would allow it to carry on awide range of physical educationfunctions and would provide it withfacilities for intercollegiate sports.

The fieldhouse designed by TheShaver Partnership utilizes light-weig' t technology to enclose anacre of space. The structure itself isformed by three hinged arches cov-ered with a lightweight membraneof steel cables, fiberglass and ure-thane foam. The column-free build-ing is 305 feet long, 174 feet wideand has a height of 70 feet. Theweight of the structure was directlyresponsible for reducing costs.Another economy was the virtualelimination of outside walls.

Billowing catenary forms aid the acoustical control whileproviding height for a variety of activities. Tennis, volley-ball, badminton, football, baseball, basketball, track andfield and a host of lifetime sports can all be carried on inthe huge Graceland fieldhouse.

East Memorial ElementarySchool. By using a light-weight structure for thisproject in Greeley, Colo-rado, The Shaver Partner-ship was able to design aschool with total interiorflexibility.

Steel cables suspendedfrom each of three mastssupport the full weight ofthe roof, leaving the inte-rior free of supporting wallsand columns. The interiorof the school can be re-moved and rebuilt withoutaffecting the building'sstructure. Such flexibilityis virtually impossible toattain with conventionalconstruction techniques.

While economy was notthe prime consideration indesigning this school, thefully air-conditioned build-ing was less expensivethan conventional schoolsbuilt in the same districtseveral years earlier.

La Verne College Student Cen-ter. The design challenge wasto provide a student center fora fraction of the cost of a tradi-tional campus building. Theanswer: a lightweight structureSixty-seven thousand squarsfeet of usable space is beingenclosed for the La Verne, Cali-fornia, institution by a canopyof woven fiberglass and Teflonover stretched steel cables. Thecables spring from ecIrth bermsand concrete compressionrings which form the structure'swalls.

The interior was arranged asa "village street" down whichstudents might walk and whichwould provide them with anumber of attractions. Amongthese are a 200-seat theatre, physical education facilities forteam and lifetime sports, instruc-tional areas for fine arts, studentgovernment offices, a snack barand cafeteria, a book store, ahealth clinic, a post office and anumber of leisure areas forinformal activities. Displayareas for student and profes-sional work are also providedunder the lightweight roof.

Milli s -311ege FieldHouse. ;.:i.supported,cable-rstrt.:ined light-weight strLezure is beingused in Johnson City, Ten-nessee to provide MilliganCollege with a 78,000square foot, column-freefieldhouse. The building isbeing constructed forapproximately half theconventional cost.

The Milligan fieldhousehas a permanent, tough, synthetic "skin" less than1/32nd of an inch thick. The site selected for thebuilding was a naturalearth valley which is com-plementary to the low sil-houette of the structure. The site permitted thebuilding to be designedwithout exterior walls, fur-ther reducing costs. Thistype of lightweight struc-ture receives its primarysupport from air blowninto the building to createinternal pressure slightlygreater than that outside. The cables add perma-nence and stability. Struc-tural consulting engineerswere David Geiger-HorstBerger, PC. Roof design byDavid Geiger.

Among other projects designed by The Shaver Partnership are: 1. Montgomery Central High School,Clarksville, Tenn.; 2. McPherson, Kans., High School; 3. Playground shelter for Arrowwood Elemen-tary School, Saginaw, Mich.; 4. Proposed lifetime sports center, Alief, Tex.; 5. Proposed junior highschool, Las Vegas, Nev.; 6. Sherwood Elementary School, Greeley, Colo.; 7. Proposed student center,Glen Cove, N. Y; 8. Pioposed elementary school, Des Moines, Iowa.

Research on many of the projects shown in this brochure was funded by Educational Facilities Laboratories, Inc.

"I should most of all like to develop the actual structureout of existence altogether, so as to get more space andenergy for what should be done inside our buildings."
