Toourstudents:WelcometoDoctoralStudiesinArchitectureattheUniversityofMichigan.ThishandbookforDoctoralStudiesinArchitectureprovidesapracticalguidetodegreerequirements,includinginformationaboutcoursework,examinations,andthedoctoraldissertation. WithinDoctoralStudies,threemainsubfieldscurrentlystructurefacultyexpertiseinArchitecture:BuildingTechnology(BT),DesignStudies(DS),andHistory/Theory(HT).Theseareadesignationsrefertofacultyresearchareas,nottostudentconcentrations.StartinginFall2018,weareacceptingstudentswithoutastrictareadesignation,toallowfortheincreasednumberofcross-andinterdisciplinaryprojectsthatwehaveseeninrecentyears.Allofourresearchprojectsshareatleastonecommongoal:toseekoutpoorlyunderstoodorunknownconditionsofthepast,present,andfuture.Doctoralprojectstypicallydefinenewfieldsofstudywithinandbetweenourthreedesignations.Wearededicatedtopromotingthisgrowth,andtoprovidingstudentswitharigorousenvironmentinwhichtobuildtheirbaseofknowledge,takerisks,andconfrontchallenges.
WithinthebroadspectrumofresearchatTaubmanCollege,doctoralresearchprojectsarebydefinitionlong-term.SuchprojectsrelatetocurrentconcernsofarchitectureculturefromarangeofvantagepointsAtthesametime,dissertationprojectsareoftenspeculativeandrisky.Theirrelevanceisattimesvisibleinnewknowledgeornewmannersofcritiquethatcanbedeployedinarchitectureimmediately.Ourresearchoftenfocusesontheinterfacebetweendisciplines,however,oronlong-termdata-intensivework.Insuchcasesitsimportancemayappearlongafterthedissertationhasbeencompleted.TaubmanCollegehoststhisheterogeneityofresearchmodes,bothimmediatelyapplicableandlong-term,withacommitmenttopluralismandopen-mindedexplorationinourfield.
DoctoralStudiesarehousedintheTaubmanCollegeofArchitectureandUrbanPlanning.YettheinterdisciplinaryaspectofdoctoralresearchinvolvesourstudentsindepartmentsandprogramsacrosstherichcampusoftheUniversityofMichigan.DoctoralStudiesprovidesarchitecturestudentswithanentrypointintofieldssuchasurbanstudies,visualculturestudies,scienceandtechnologystudies,informationscience,history,comparativeliterature,publicpolicy,law,business,engineering,andmanyothers.DoctoralStudiesinArchitectureopenupthesefieldsandmaketheirmethodsandfindingsavailabletostudentswhowilldefineourdisciplineinyearstocome.Ourlinkstothesefields,andtointensivestudywithinarchitectureitself(whethertechnological,historical,sociological,ordesign-oriented)arecrucialtothecontinuinggrowthofthefield.Inthecourseofexploringotherdisciplinaryframeworks,ordivingdeeplyintoexistingones,webringnewmaterialbacktothearchitectureschoolcommunityforconsiderationanddebate.Wescoutnewdisciplinaryframeworks,newpotentialslatentwithinarchitecture,andpastphenomenathataddresscurrentandfutureconcerns.Weencourageyoutoparticipateinformaloutreacheffortssuchasdoctoralcolloquiaandconferences,butalsotocreatemoreinformalopportunitiesfordiscourseprovidedbytheuniversityenvironment. PURSUINGAPH.D.INARCHITECTURETheDoctorofPhilosophy(Ph.D.)accommodatesinvestigationsofarchitectureandthebuiltenvironmentthatunfoldoveraspanofyears.Studentsembarkingonadoctorateseeknewinsightsintopast,current,andfuturedevelopmentsofarchitectureandbuildingpractices.Doctoralstudypromotesindependentcriticalthinkersandresearchspecialistsacrossarangeoffieldswithintheincreasinglybroadfieldsofarchitectureandthebuiltenvironment.TheUniversityofMichigan’sPh.D.inArchitecturewasoneofonlyfoursuchprogramsintheUnitedStateswhenitwasestablishedin1968.Sincethatdate,thedegreehasevolvedinresponsetochangesinthedisciplineandtheprofession.StudiescurrentlyunderwayatMichigantestifytorapidlyshiftingdisciplinaryboundariesandincreasinglyglobaloutlooksinthefieldoverallbutparticularlyinareasinwhichourfacultyarestrong,suchasglobalmodernism,mediapracticesinarchitecture,spacesyntax,structuralmodeling,envelopedesign,andurbanhistory.Michigan’sremarkableresearchfacilitiesallowourstudentstodevelopinterdisciplinaryresearchprojectswithpartnersacrosscampus.TheHoraceH.RackhamGraduateSchoolawardsthePh.D.,generallyafterfiveorsixyearsofstudy.ThearchitectureschoolenvironmentcontinuestoprovideDoctoralStudieswitharichsupportingcontext..AbroadarrayofresourcesbeyondourhomeonNorthCampusincludesextensiveresearchlibrariesandcomputingfacilitiesthatareamongthebestinthecountry.Studentsareencouragedtoseekoutresourcesthatarenecessarytodevelopandcarryouttopicsofresearch,particularlyforthedissertation,ifanyareunavailableoncampus.GETTINGACCLIMATEDTOAPHDENVIRONMENTBecausemanyofourenteringstudentscomefromprofessionaldegreeprograms,weemphasizetheimportanceofthesubtlebutsubstantiveshiftfromdesign-basedstudioworktoresearchinmajorsubfieldsofarchitecturalpracticeandstudy.Thisshiftoftenrequiresre-traininginbasicskillssuchasreading,writing,andstatistics,amongotherresearchmethods.Werequirearelativelyhighnumberofcoursecredits(40intotal),andasignificanttimecommitmenttocompletionofdegree.Fouryearsarenormallyspentinresidenceandarefullyfundedwithtuition,stipend,andbenefits.Twoadditionalyearsoftuitionbenefitallowstudentstocompletethedegreewithfellowshipsupportfromotheruniversityunitsorexternalsources.Thissupportistypicallyraisedintheirfourthandfifthyearsofstudy.Thefirsttwoyearsofthedegreearedevotedtointensivecourseworkintendedtotrainstudentsintheprincipalmethodsandmaterialsusedinarchitecturalresearchwritlarge.Thethirdyearisspentpreparingforandpassingdoctoralexaminationsandidentifyingadissertationproject.Studentsadvancetocandidacyaftertakingtheirpreliminaryexaminations,generallybyJanuaryofthethirdyear.Studentsworkingonhistory/theorytopicsmustalsosatisfythelanguagerequirement(minimally,competenceinoneresearchlanguage)inordertoadvancetocandidacy.Attheendofthethirdyear,studentsdefendtheirdissertationproposalinapublicdefensewiththeirdissertationcommittee.Yearsfourandfiveand,ifnecessary,six,arespentinresearching,writing,anddefendingthedissertation.Duringtheinitialphaseofdissertationresearch,studentsmayspendsubstantialtimeoffcampus,supportedbyinternalandexternalfellowships.TheyoftenreturntoAnnArbortowriteuptheresultsofresearch.Thedissertationisdefendedinaformaldissertationdefense.Timetodegreevariesamongthespecializationsofourdegree,butstudentstypicallytakeatleastfiveorsixyearstocompletethedegree.Traininginteachingandresearchisanintegralpartofthedegree.Facultymembersworkcloselywithstudentstoprovidethemwithnecessaryteachingandresearchskills.StudentshaveopportunitiestodeveloptheirprofessionalcapacitiesasGraduateStudentInstructors(GSIs)andthroughresearchassistantshipswithfacultymembers.MAJORANDMINORAREASOFSPECIALIZATIONEachdoctoralstudentidentifiesamajorandaminorareaofspecializationandworkswithfacultyadvisorsassociatedwiththoseareas.Theseadvisorsshouldbeidentifiedandcontactedbythemiddleofthesecondyearof

courseworkatthelatest,althoughmanystudentshaveidentifiedaprimaryadvisorbeforearrivinginAnnArbor.ThemajorisdefinedwithinoneofthethreeareasofspecializationofDoctoralStudiesfaculty(whoarecurrentlygroupedunderthecategoriesofbuildingtechnology;designdtudies;andhistory/theory).Theminorisadistinctsubjectareathatcomplementsthemajor.Theminorcanbeoneoftheothertwoareaswithinthedoctoraldegree,itmaylieinUrbanandRegionalPlanning,oritcanbelocatedinanotherUniversityofMichigandepartment,program,orcenter.CourseworkintheminormustbeapprovedforRackhamgraduatecredit,deemedappropriatebytheDoctoralAdvisoryCommittee,andapprovedbythemajoradvisor.

GOVERNANCESTRUCTUREOFDOCTORALSTUDIESINARCHITECTUREDoctoralStudiesinArchitectureisgovernedbyafacultycommittee,theDoctoralStudiesAdvisoryCommittee(DSAC)andadministeredbytheDirectorofDoctoralStudies.Membersofthecommitteeservetwo-yearterms,andareelectedfromtheareasubfieldsoffaculty,aswellasfromtheat-largepopulationofdoctoralfaculty.TheDirectorofDoctoralStudiesisappointedbytheDean;theChairofArchitectureisanex-officiomemberoftheDSAC.Onestudentmemberofthecommitteeiselectedeachyear,andispresentatallmeetingsthatdonotinvolveconfidentialstudentinformation.

REQUIREMENTSFORTHEPH.D.Thedoctorateisawardedinrecognitionofexpertiseinaspecificareawithinthedisciplineofarchitecturebroadlyconceived,asdemonstratedthroughcoursework,thePreliminaryExamination,andsuccessfulsubmissionofadissertationthatmakesanoriginalcontributiontothefield.ThePh.D.isawardeduponcompletionoftherequirementsdetailedbelow.Therearetwokindsofrequirementsforthedoctorate:thefirstareincremental,andfollowoneanotherinsequence;thesecondarestandingrequirementsthatpertainthroughouttheyearsofdoctoralstudy.

TheoryinArchitecturalResearch(ARCH812;alt.HA615withadvisor’spermission)[3credits]Thiscoursepresentsthematicissuesrelevanttoarchitecturalresearchacrosstheboard.ResearchMethods(ARCH813)[3credits]ARCH813servesasamethodscoursewithavarietyofapproachestoresearchandwritingmethodologyAreaSeminars(ARCH823,824,825)[3credits]Theareaseminarprovidesasubstantiveoverviewoftheseminalliteratureandthemes.Theyareorganizedbyfacultysubfield:buildingtechnology(825),designstudiestopics(824),andhistory/theorytopics(823).Coursecontentchangesfromyeartoyearandmayincludeaselectionofkeytopicareas,orthemes.EverystudentisrequiredtoattendatleastoneareaseminarinconsultationwiththeiradvisorortheDirector.Astudentmaywishto,ormaybeaskedtoelectasecondareaseminarifappropriate.Insuchacase,thesecondareaseminarwillcounttowardtherequiredcreditsinthestudent'smajororminor.ResearchPracticum(ARCH839,URP835orcomparablecoursework)[3creditsrequired;UP835is4credits]Thepracticumgenerallyresultsinalongpaper.Thisrequirementenablesstudenttoconductindependentresearchonalimitedscaleatthelevelofqualityexpectedforadissertation,althoughtheresultingpaperismuchshorterinlength.Theresearchshouldbecomparabletothatwhichresultsinapublishablearticle.Basedonconsultationwiththemajoradvisor,thepracticummaytakeoneofseveralforms,includingbutnotlimitedto:
• aself-containedpaperorempiricalstudyofpublishablequalitythatmayormaynotbeacomponentofthedissertationwork;
• thedevelopmentofatheoreticalmodeluponwhichthedissertationistobebased;• aproposalforpilotresearchinthestudent'sdissertationareathatincludesafocusedliteraturereview,
researchdesign,andprotocol.EachstudentmustelecttotakethePracticuminoneofthreeways,withtheapprovalofhis/hermajoradvisor:
• asathreecredithourindependentstudywithhis/hermajoradvisor;• asa600orhigherlevelcourseofatleastthreecredithoursinhis/hermajorareaofspecialization;• asUP835[4credits]withpriorapprovalfromhis/hermajoradvisor.
*Pleasenotethattheresearchpracticummustbecompletedandgradedbeforethepreliminaryexamscanbegin.Languages.Studentsfocusingonhistory/theorytopicsmustdemonstratereadingproficiencythroughdepartmentalexaminationorapprovedcourseworkinatleastonerelevantresearchlanguage.Thestudent’sfacultyadvisorortheDirectorofDoctoralStudies(ifnoadvisorhasyetbeenselected)mustapprovethechoiceoflanguage.Thelanguageexamisadministeredbycollegefacultyrecommendedbythestudent’sadvisororbytheDirector,orbyamemberoftheappropriatedepartmentelsewhereintheUniversity.Itisadvisableforthelanguagerequirementtobemetearly,eitherduringthestudent’sfirstyearorthesummerfollowingthefirstyear,sinceknowledgeoflanguageshasadirectbearingontheresearchastudentisabletoundertakeinthefirsttwoyearsofwork.Studentsworkingonhistory/theorytopicscannotadvancetocandidacyattheendoftheirthirdyeariftheyhavenotsatisfiedthelanguagerequirement,inwhichcaseSatisfactoryProgress(seebelow)isjeopardized.Cognatecourses.AsmandatedbytheRackhamGraduateSchool,studentsmusttaketwothree-creditcognatecoursesinrelateddisciplinesatthegraduatelevel(coursesnumbered400orhigher).Undercertainconditions,studentsenteringthedegreewithanMAmayhaveoneoftheirtwocognatesfulfilled“inspirit”basedontheirpreviousMAcoursework.ThisoptionrequirestheapprovaloftheDirectorofDoctoralStudies,whowillpetitiontheOfficeofAcademicRecordsandDissertationsonthestudent’sbehalf.PreliminaryExamination.StudentsshouldpassthePreliminaryExaminationduringthefifthtermofstudy.Thepreliminaryexaminationisdesignedtochallengestudentswiththekindsofquestionsthatmayresultinorunderpindissertationresearch.Thepurposeoftheexaminationistodemonstratethestudent’scompetenceinboththemajorandminorsubjectareas,aswellasabroadandintegrativeknowledgeofarchitecturalresearch.

Specifically,thepreliminaryexaminationseekstoposethekindsofquestionsthatwillhelpthestudentaccomplishtwogoals:

AfterAdvisoryCommitteereview,thereportisplacedinthestudent'sfile,alongwithevaluationsofhis/herprogressbytheadvisorandofhis/herworkasaGSI/GSRAbythefacultysupervisor(s).Aletterdescribingthecommittee'sassessmentofthestudent'sacademicprogress,copiedtotheadvisor,issenttothestudent.Ifthecommitteehasconcerns,theletterwilloutlinerequirementsthatthestudentmustmeetinordertoremainingoodacademicstanding.Financialsupportforthesubsequentyeardependsupontimelycompletionofasatisfactoryreview.

EnglishLanguageProficiencyRequirement.Priortotakingthequalifyingexaminations,studentsarerequiredtodemonstratewritingskillsintheEnglishlanguageofthesortrequiredtoproduceawell-writtendoctoraldissertation.Typically,suchwritingskillswillbedemonstratedintheprocessofcompletingwrittenassignmentsinthecorecourses.StudentshavingdifficultydoingsoareencouragedtotakewritingcoursesattheEnglishLanguageInstituteand/orotheruniversityunits.Subsequenttothecompletionofsuchcourses,theyarerequiredtotakeanEnglishProficiencyExaminationbeforetheysitforthequalifyingexaminations.IntheEnglishProficiencyExamination,astudentisgiventwohourstowriteanessayofapproximately800wordswithoutassistance.Theessayisthenevaluatedbyacommitteeoftwofacultymembersselectedbytheadvisorycommittee.ContinuousEnrollment.BeginninginSeptember2010,asmandatedbyRackham,allstudentsmustbeenrolled(registeredandpayingtuition)fortheentireperiodinwhichtheyareactiveinthedegree,whetherinresidenceinAnnArbororconductingresearchelsewhere.Thereisno“detachedstudy”inRackhamprograms.“Leave”isgrantedonlyforshortperiodsduringwhichstudentsareunable,forpersonalreasons,topursuetheirstudiesforoneortwoterms(dependingoncircumstance).Departmentshavebeenallocatedanumberof“tuition

fellowships”–whichcarrynostipend–toawardtostudentsduringtermswhentheyarenototherwisesupportedbyfellowshipsorteaching/researchposts.Tuitionfellowshipsmaynotbeawardedintheterminwhichastudentdefendsthedissertation.StudentscanbesupportedintheirfinaltermbyRackhamPre-doctoralFellowships,RackhamOne-TermDissertationFellowships,fellowshipsattheInstituteofHumanities,RackhamMeritFellowships,orGSI-ships;theCollegewillhelppaytuitionorcost-sharewiththestudentwhenfundsareavailable.SatisfactoryProgress.SatisfactoryProgressisdefinedasmaintaininganappropriate(asdistinctfromminimallyacceptable)academicrecord,reachingthevariousstagesofprogressinthedegreeatornearthetimeexpectedofthemajorityofstudents,and,forstudentssupportedbyteachingassistantships,givingevidenceofsatisfactoryteaching.
Themodesofresearchandscholarshipinarchitecturearediverse.StudentsinDoctoralStudiesinArchitectureengageinavarietyofsubjectsandmethodologiesatarangeofpaces.Thereisnosingle,standardpathtothePh.D.However,theDoctoralStudiesAdvisoryCommitteewillbaseitsdecisionconcerningsatisfactoryprogressonthefollowingguidelinesandpolicies:1. DoctoralStudiesinArchitectureisstructuredsothatstudentscancompletethedegreewithinfivetoseven
years(twoyearsforcoursework,onetermforpreliminaryexams;onetermforproposaldevelopment,twoormoreyearsforresearchanddissertationwriting).Somestudentsmayfinishinlessthanfiveyears,andothersinmore.Studentsshouldnormallyachievecandidacywithinthefirstfivetermsofthedegree.
2. Studentsneedingtocompletethelanguagerequirementshoulddosopriortobeingadvancedtocandidacy.3. Withinsixmonthsofachievingcandidacy,studentsshould:1)formallysubmittheirdissertationcommittee
membernamestoRackham;and2)obtaindissertationproposalapprovalfromtheirdissertationcommitteeinaformalpublicpresentation.
4. Duringcandidacy,studentsshouldcontinuetomakesustainedprogress,includingsubmittingdraftsandrevisionsofchapterstotheircommitteeatregularintervals.
ThecasesofstudentswhodonotmaintainsatisfactoryprogresswillbereviewedbytheDirectorofDoctoralStudiesandtheDoctoralAdvisoryCommitteeforappropriateaction.TheDepartmenttakessatisfactoryprogressintoaccountinawardingteachingsupport,dissertationandcandidacyfellowships,andsummerfunding.Minimallyacceptablegrades(asrequiredbyRackham):•Minimallyacceptableoverallgradepointaverage:B•Minimallyacceptablegradeinalanguagecourse:B•MinimallyacceptablegradeinanARCHcourse:B+•Minimallyacceptablegradeinacognatecourse:BFailuretoreceiveanacceptablegrademeanscoursecreditwillnotbeappliedtowardrequirementsforthedegree.Studentsperformingonlyatminimalgradelevelsjeopardizetheirownsatisfactoryprogressandwillhavedifficultyarguingforthecontinuationofsupport.Incompletes.Satisfactoryandtimelycompletionofthedegreedependsonmanagingtimeeffectivelyandcompletingcourseworkonschedule.Theaccumulationofincompletescanhavesignificantnegativeimpactonastudent’scareer(i.e.,handicappingstudentsinfellowshipcompetitions)andcanleadtoastudenthavingtowithdrawfromthedegree.StudentsshouldbeawarethatundertherulesoftheRackhamSchoolofGraduateStudies,thegrantingofincompletesisnotautomaticand,indeed,isdiscouragedinallbutextremecircumstances,andwhentheunfinishedpartofthestudent’sworkissmall.Anystudentrequestingan“I”gradeinacoursemustofficiallyrequestpermissionfromhis/herinstructorandthensetupascheduleforcompletingtheunfinishedwork.Studentsarenormallyexpectedtomakeuplateworkbeforetheendofthesubsequentterm.“I”gradesmaybechangedtolettergradesonlyiftheincompleteworkismadeupbytheendofthefourthfulltermbeyondthetermforwhichthegradeof“I”wasgiven;everysubsequentterm(Fall,Winter,Spring/Summer)iscountedregardlessofwhetherornotthestudentisenrolled.Duringthistime,thegradepointaveragecontinuestobebasedonhoursofcompletedwork.Incompletesarenotedonstudents'transcriptsevenafterafinalgradehasbeengivenforthecourse.

II.FundingOVERVIEWTypicalfundingforthedoctoraldegreeincludesfouryearsoffullfunding(tuitionfellowship,benefits,andstipendbasedonaGraduateStudentInstructorshiporaGraduateStudentResearchAssistantship)andtwoadditionalyearsoftuitiononlyfellowship(TOF)withbenefits,ifrequired.Studentsaregrantedonenon-workterm;theywillgenerallyserveasaGSIforatleasttwoyears,andmaycompeteforGSRApositionsfortheothertermsinwhichtheyreceivefullfunding,ifsuchpositionsareavailable.Individualfundingpackages,whichvaryslightlyfromyeartoyear,aredescribedintheinitialletterofadmission.Theseletterssetoutthetermsofsupport,includingtuitionremission,healthinsurance,andmonthlystipends–guaranteedsolongasstudentscontinuetomake“satisfactoryprogress”inthedegree.Arrangementsforsummerfunding–tobeusedfortravel,languagestudy,andresearchduringthefirstfouryearsinthedegree–mayalsobesetoutintheseletters,ifapplicable.StudentsmustberesidentinAnnArbortoreceivestipendsupport.Inaddition,limitedfundsareavailable(varyingfromyeartoyear)tosubsidizeattendanceatconferencesintheareaofthestudent’sdissertationresearchandtosupportpublicationcosts.Ifthestudentispresentingapaperataconference,he/sheshouldapplytotheRackhamSchoolofGraduateStudiesforsupport.Themaximumamountvariesfornationalandinternationalconferences.WhenfundsareavailablefromtheArchitectureProgram,theprogramwillconsidersupplementingaRackhamaward.Rackhamalsohasfundingavailableforpre-candidacyandcandidacyresearch;studentsshouldconsulttheRackhamwebsiteforfurtherinformation.ThedoctoralstudiespageoftheCollegewebsitecontainsalistofavailablefellowships–local,nationalandinternational.Studentsshouldconsultthislistandbeawarethatsomedeadlinesoccurearlyintheacademicyear.SomefellowshipsrequiredepartmentalnominationandstudentsmayasktobeconsideredinaformalprocessthattakesplaceeachSeptember.Fellowshipnominationrequests,includingafullprojectproposalordraftgrantapplication,aredueannuallybySeptember1.Thedepartmentiscommittedtohelpingstudentsgainsupportfortheirresearchandholdsagrant-writingworkshopeachyear.Studentsshouldaskadvisorstoreadandcommentondraftsoftheirproposalswellinadvanceofallfellowshipnominationandsubmissiondeadlines.Seehttps://taubmancollege.umich.edu/architecture/admissions/financial-aid-and-scholarships/phd-architectureforfurtherinformationonfundingresourcesFUNDINGCOMPONENTSDoctoralStudiesinArchitecture,inpartnershipwiththeTaubmanCollegeandtheRackhamGraduateSchool,iscommittedtofundingdoctoralstudentsfortheirfirstfouryears.Studentsenteringthedegree(startingin2006orlater)receiveafundingpackageforamaximumofsixyears(12terms)ofstudy:fouryearsoftuition,benefits,andstipend;andtwoyearsoftuitionandbenefitsonly.Thispackageincludestuitionforfallandwinter,monthly

Iffundingissuspendedbecauseofdelayedcandidacyorproposalapproval,itmaybereinstatedoncethesehavebeenachieved.However,fulldoctoralfundingwillnotbeextendedbeyondtheendoftheeighthregulartermafteritwasbegun,exceptunderspecialcircumstances.StudentsshouldarrangetheirschedulesinordertobeavailableforassignmentasaGSI/GSRAandtoperformthedutiesrequiredbytheirfacultysupervisors.Facultysupervisorswillevaluatestudents’performanceasGSI/GSRAfortheAnnualReviewinMay.Doctoralfundingisforfallandwinterterms(September-April).Studentsareresponsibleforfundingduringthespring/summerterm(May-August).Inorderforfundingtocontinueduringthenextacademicyear,studentsmustremainingoodacademicstanding.ThisisevaluatedeveryMayduringtheAnnualReviewconductedbytheDoctoralStudiesAdvisoryCommitteebasedonastudent’sAnnualProgramofStudyReport,approvedbyhis/heradvisor,aswellasonevaluationsbytheadvisorandGSI/GSRAsupervisors.RESIDENCYREQUIREMENTS:StudentsmustberesidentinAnnArborduringthefirstfourtermsofstudyandshouldremaininresidencethroughoutthePreliminaryExampreparationtermandforthedevelopmentoftheirdissertationproposals.Anynon-residencytermwithinthetermoffullfunding(Years1-4)mustbearrangedinconsultationwiththeadvisorandtheDirector.Studentsmaybeneededtoteachwithinthefirstfouryears,andarethereforeexpectedtobeavailableforGSIshipsduringthistime.Thestudentneednotbeinresidenceforthefinalthreetermsofstudy,althoughresidencystatusmayaffectthelevelofsupportprovided(seebelow).OUTSIDEFUNDINGINCENTIVE:Ph.D.studentsareencouragedtoseekoutsidefunding,bothfromotherunitsoncampusandfromsourcesoutsidetheuniversity.Thesesourcesincludecompetitivegrantsandfellowships,researchpositions,andGSI/GSRApositionsoutsidetheTaubmanCollege.Studentsarealsoencouragedtoseekfundingand/orresearchpositionsduringthespring/summerterms(May-August).

Withintwoweeksofreceivingnotice,thestudentmustconsultwithhis/heradvisor,developaplanwithdetailedstepsandtimelinesforcompletingtherequirements,obtaintheadvisor’sapproval,andsubmitittothedirectorforapprovalbytheAdvisoryCommittee.
