What Is Doctor Who? Doctor Who Is a Science Fiction programme on Television

which was created by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) It is an entertaining programme which is about a Time lord known as Doctor Who, who travels through time meeting many aliens and creatures along the way… Exciting Stuff!

Doctor Who is so big that it is the longest running sci-fi Television show in the World!!!

Doctor Who first came to our screens on the 23rd of

November 1963 until the 6th of December 1989 and consisted of 26 series’ on BBC One.

It then took a break but took to our screens again, thankfully in 2005 with its revival being a huge success!!!

AudienceDoctor Who is watched all over the world by millions young or old and really does cater for most.

It’s Sci-Fi genre would suggest that it is mainly for boys but with the right hand man tending to be a girl and a wide range of themes and issues there is always something for everyone to relate to.

It is mainly aimed at a young audience due to its fictional themes with make believe monsters and mystical aliens. It is further proven by the products that come with the programme for example the Doctor Who magazine which because of its layout and writing would suggest its for the younger generation.

There is also the Merchandise including Doctor who figures, watches, T-shirts and books all ideal for children.

The fact that my mum and dad know about Doctor who and used to watch it when they were younger indicates that it was traditionally aimed at younger people.

The revival of Doctor Who in 2005 has I believe now made it more of a family programme.

I believe this because with adults recognising it from there youth and the children of today getting involved everyone can sit down on a Saturday evening and view it together keeping the interest going.

With it not always being ad hoc and with some episodes which link people will always be tuning in to see what happens next.

Thank you Web 2.0!There is no doubt that with

the new age of Web 2.0 the production of Doctor Who has been enhanced and improved.

Thanks to Web 2.o Doctor Who can take its success on the screen in our homes to a success on the World Wide Web.

We are now able to access information about the Doctor and friends over the web as well as discussing with others about the series through mailing, blogs and chat rooms.

Web 2.0 is also a huge benefit for the Doctor Who phenomenon because it can now be distributed and exhibited quicker over the net, and to more places than ever making it worldwide and continuing its growing popularity!

Like most Television programmes now the way we view them and when is more under our control.

With BBC I player being a key example we can now view Doctor Who on the web when we want and not always when it is scheduled to air. This is great for people who have a life and want to go out when Doctor Who is on, knowing that they can watch it at there convenience another time.

We can now also thanks to extra channels like BBC three we can now watch older episodes and repeats of previous ones. Making viewing a lot more varied and enjoyable.

If your extreme you can even watch Doctor Who on your phone!

Its not only viewing of the content which has changed it is also the input to content that we can now influence. Thanks to blogs and feedback sites we are able to comment on the shows and feedback giving producers and makers food for thought!

The Future!!!The future of Doctor Who I believe is in it’s own hands. Its

proved that even if it was to take a break it can still light the hearts of its fans. And such as its Fan base I believe there is always a place for it.

What Doctor Who has done as well to make sure its legacy lives on is make spin offs maintaining characters and story lines helping keep it alive and up to date.

An example of this is the Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood. Which has proved to be a huge success among its audience. What both have done is kept certain heroes and aliens including the ever famous Daleks and Cyber men which help attract audiences familiar with the Doctor Who franchise.

Theory

Long Tail Theory (Chris Anderson)

His theory suggests that we can consume less of more which is similar to Doctor Who which supports the theory because we can now view more of its smaller amounts over different platforms on the world wide web.

Furthermore Doctor Who will be able to continue the theory keeping it going with its online access.

The Theory looks at how we receive the text and interpret it which in Doctor who’s case is done over the web. The theory looks at response and therefore through its feedback, forums and digital influence the Doctor Who supports the theory.

Issues For the Future

With Doctor Who being a World Wide thing. Issues with copyright is always a problem.

Doctor who’s Logo for example is seen as copyright proof by the BBC and as made by them they have all rights over it.

There is always the risk of it being downloaded over the net illegally. Doctor Who has DVD’s and Games which if were to be copied and then sold would also be a breach of copyright infringement!

But with new laws coming into the place there is guarantee of the Doctor and the gang being given a lot more protection!
