WelcometothethirdannualDOCNYCfestival.WehaveastellarguestlistthatincludesKenBurns,AlexGibney,BarbaraKopple,JaredLeto,PeteSeeger,RufusWainwrightandmanymore.We’regladyoucanjoinus,too!
With over 100 films and panels at the festival, we hope you sample from several sections. Start with our expanded Gala line-up featuring films with high-profile makers and subjects, among them the world premiere of CAN’T STAND LOSING YOU, a portrait of pop-rock legends The Police. Move on to the Viewfinders competition section for distinct directorial voices, including the US premiere of THE PERVERT’S GUIDE TO IDEOLOGY, reuniting the provocative duo of filmmaker Sophie Fiennes and cultural critic extraordinaire Slavoj Žižek. For New York stories, turn to the Metropolis competition, with highlights like PLIMPTON!, a profile of the inimitable man of letters.
This year, the festival introduces two new sidebar sections: Sonic Cinema taps into the vibrant doc genre of music with such films as BIG STAR: NOTHING CAN HURT ME, a US premiere; Photography on Film explores the intersection between still and moving images with programs like the one-time-only event VII UNCOMMISSIONED.
DOC NYC also expands its panel offerings with Doc-A-Thon, a five-day series of discussions and masterclasses essential for both established professionals and aspiring filmmakers. The American Perspectives and International Perspectives sections boast lively docs covering subjects as diverse as an ambitious animator in PERSISTENCE OF VISION and Guatemalan bus culture in LA CAMIONETA. The ShortList section expands to offer another look at ten of the year’s best documentaries, all front-runners for awards season. And our Midnight selections bring you late-night eye-openers like BETTIE PAGE REVEALS ALL.
What else is new? DOC NYC gains a new venue—not to mention a second neighborhood—with the addition of the SVA Theatre in Chelsea to our home base at IFC Center; plus two new programmers: Mystelle Brabbée (feature docs) and Basil Tsiokos (shorts and panels). Now we’re looking for new audiences to join our loyal followers.

Venus and Serena gains unprecedented access into the lives of the tennis-conquering Williams sisters during the most intimidating year of their careers. Over the course of 2011, Venus grappled with an energy-sapping autoimmune disease while Serena battled back from a life-threatening pulmonary embolism. But neither sister let adversity hold her back. Filmmakers Maiken Baird and Michelle Major (who worked in Peter Jennings’ documentary unit at ABC News) join forces with esteemed collaborators including editor Sam Pollard (When the Levees Broke) and musician Wyclef Jean. The film “gives a better sense of the sisters… than do reams of sports reportage” (Variety). (99 min) In person: Michelle Major

USPREMIERE In May 2011, family and friends gathered in New York City’s Town Hall Theater to pay tribute to the late, great singer-songwriter Kate McGarrigle. A prolific musician, her untimely death shattered not only her family and friends, but legions of fans worldwide. Director Lian Lunson, who met McGarrigle’s son Rufus Wainwright while directing Leonard Cohen I’m Your Man, lovingly brings this story to the screen. The resulting film is part concert (with performances by Wainwright, Emmylou Harris, Norah Jones, Antony Hegarty and others) and part intimate look at a family coming to terms with the loss of a loved one. In 1989, five black and Latino teenagers were arrested and charged for brutally attacking and raping a white female jogger in Central Park. News media swarmed the case, calling it “the crime of the century.” But the truth about what really happened didn’t become clear until after the five had spent years in prison for a crime they didn’t commit. This story of injustice finally gets the telling it deserves. The film recently made headlines when lawyers for New York City attempted to subpoena its outtakes for an ongoing lawsuit. A story whose aftershocks continue to shape the city, this promises to be one of the most high-profile documentaries of the year. No documentary project has rivaled the scope and longevity of Michael Apted’s epic group portrait. Starting in 1964, a film crew interviewed a collection of British 7 year-olds from different social backgrounds. Apted has returned every 7 years to update their lives through successes, disappointments, births and deaths. Now at the age of 56, the individuals open up again to assess whether their lives have been ruled more by circumstance or self-determination. (143 min)

WORLD PREMIERE Documentaries offer a unique encounter between art and actuality. Yet the genre is perpetually misunderstood: its artistry neglected, its truthfulness suspected, its real-world impact overlooked. Veteran doc makers Cal Skaggs and David Van Taylor have spent nearly a decade interviewing documentary pioneers for a multi-part history of the field. In this 2-hour section, we see the invention of the social documentary in reaction to the Great Depression and the bending of the form toward propaganda during World War II. In 1970, on a caravan of hippie school buses headed to a patch of rural Tennessee land, Ina May Gaskin and her friends began delivering each other’s babies. Birth Story: Ina May Gaskin & the Farm Midwives shows how these women, with counterculture heroine Gaskin as their leader, not only taught themselves midwifery from the ground up, but, with their families, founded an entirely communal, agricultural society called The Farm, where they changed a generation’s approach to childbirth. USPREMIERE Tomi Ungerer rose to prominence in the late 1950s as the creator of acclaimed children’s books—”I dare say, no one was as original,” Maurice Sendak once ventured. Ungerer’s creativity also encompassed iconic 60s protest posters and lavish books of erotica; but when his work was banned, he risked fading into obscurity. To some, George Plimpton was best known as the founder of America’s premiere literary magazine, The Paris Review. To others, he was a participatory sports journalist. Plimpton! Starring George Plimpton as Himself shows the many facets of this writer, editor, amateur sportsman and friend of the rich and famous. Using Plimpton’s own narration—along with thoughts and stories from friends, family and contemporaries—the film is a joyful celebration of a life lived fully, richly, strangely, and so variously that it’s hard to believe it was led by just one man. DOC NYC’s expanded panel series offers documentary filmmakers and film fans access to five days of in-depth discussions by leading creators and industry figures. Each day is organized around an essential part of the process of creating and sharing a non-fiction project.
Doc-A-Thon section is co-presented by A&E IndieFilms.
Filmmaking can be a very costly endeavor. Where do documentary filmmakers find their resources? These four panels explore the opportunities for documentary funding in four key areas.
• taP into tv 10:30am – 11:45am Television can often provide documentary filmmakers with substantial parts of their budget
as well as bigger audiences than a traditional theatrical release. Find out what broadcasters are looking for, and how they make their decisions to acquire or commission documentaries. Representatives from HBO (Sara Bernstein), A&E (David McKillop), POV (Cynthia Lopez), and the recently announced CNN Films (Vinnie Malhotra) explain.
• taP into crowds 12:15pm – 1:30pm In the past few years, filmmakers and other artists have embraced crowdfunding as a legitimate
source of support for their endeavors. But with the growing popularity of sites like Indiegogo, Kickstarter, and others, how do projects stand out, and how can filmmakers combat crowdfunding fatigue? Indiegogo founder Slava Rubin, successful crowdfunding filmmaker Gary Hustwit, and others discuss.
• taP into grants 2:00pm – 3:15pm Foundations and other grantmakers have proven invaluable in providing needed resources
and guidance to innumerable documentary filmmakers. What’s the competition like, and what are grantors looking for? Representatives from Tribeca Film Institute, Cinereach, and more shed light on their process.
• taP into equity 3:45pm – 5:00pm A funding source for some documentary filmmakers, often those focusing on projects with the
potential to have substantial social impact, is equity investment. What do investors look for, and how can filmmakers find them? Representatives from Impact Partners and filmmakers who have used equity investment share their insight.
doc-a-thon doc-a-thon
It’s time to make your film, but your production doesn’t need to re-invent the wheel. Take your cues from some of today’s leading documentary creators in these four masterclasses.
• masterclass: directing 10:30am – 11:45am Everyone wants to be a director, but do you know what you’re getting yourself into? Acclaimed
directors Liz Garbus (Love, Marilyn) and Bart Layton (The Imposter) discuss their films and their working process, from finding their concept and characters and developing their story to assembling and working with their team.
• masterclass: Producing 12:15pm – 1:30pm Documentary filmmakers often spread themselves thin wearing too many hats. Working with a
strong producer can make the difference between a successful film and a lost opportunity, but emerging directors don’t always fully understand what a producer does. Established producers Jeremy Chilnick (Mansome, The Greatest Movie Ever Sold) and Amy Briamonte (Into The Abyss, Cave Of Forgotten Dreams) explain their wide-ranging role.
• masterclass: cinematograPhy 2:00pm – 3:15pm Cinematographers are instrumental in making films memorable, working with their directors
to capture the right moment and to establish a documentary’s look. Noted DPs Tom Hurwitz (The Queen Of Versailles, Valentino) and Alan Jacobsen (Racing Dreams, The Trials Of Darryl Hunt) share clips from their work and insight on documentary aesthetics.
• in conversation with alex gibney 3:45pm – 5:00pm Join us for an intimate one-on-one conversation with Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney,
whose credits include Taxi to the Dark Side; Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room; and Mea Maxima Culpa, playing at DOC NYC. Find out the secrets behind his prolific output.

You’ve been shooting for months (years?) and it’s finally time to wrap things up and share your doc with the world. Learn all about post-production from the experts in today’s four masterclasses.
• masterclass: editing 10:30am – 11:45am Documentary makers don’t have the same control over storylines as fiction filmmakers. But
a great documentary editor can shape your footage into a compelling tale. Notable editors reveal their pivotal storytelling role through clips of particularly challenging assignments, and discuss the process of collaborating with directors and producers.
• masterclass: music & sound 12:15pm – 1:30pm Co-presented by Chicken & Egg Pictures. Chicken & Egg Pictures leads this hands-on
workshop shepherding their recent grantees through the essential but often overlooked process of music composition and sound design for non-fiction work.
• masterclass: into the archives 2:00pm – 3:15pm Co-presented by NBCUniversal Archives. Archival footage can help bring non-fiction
projects to life, providing relevant visual diversity to what otherwise might be the dry recitation of past events. Where can documentary filmmakers find quality archival material, and what does it take to license it? A panel of industry experts will discuss what’s involved with heading into the archives.
• masterclass: animation & graPhics 3:45pm – 5:00pm Animation, graphics, and other visual effects have become a standard feature of documentaries
in recent years, helping to illustrate arguments and to capture the viewer’s attention. But designing and implementing these elements can be intimidating. Learn more about what’s possible from some of the go-to experts in the field in this discussion.

Documentary filmmaking is not all about creating art—it also involves a business side, and that comes with risks. Learn how to protect yourself and your work in today’s panels.
• do i need a sales agent? 10:30am – 11:45am The period between finishing and distributing your film is crucial. Who sees your film, and
where, can make or break its chances for theatrical or broadcast. Leading sales agents, including Submarine’s Josh Braun, Cinetic’s Dana O’Keefe, and Films Transit’s Diana Holtzberg discuss how you can benefit from their experience and contacts.
• fair use 12:15pm – 1:30pm Fair Use—the royalty-free utilization of content—is still the subject of confusion for both
filmmakers and some attorneys. In this session moderated by attorney Dan Satorius, he and other legal experts explore conceptions and misconceptions around Fair Use.
• crowdfunding 2.0 2:00pm – 3:15pm Crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and RocketHub have been popular in
recent years, connecting filmmakers with individuals willing to donate to projects for honorary credits or other incentives. With the passage of Obama’s JOBS Act, the door has been opened to expand crowdfunding to investors, not just donors. This panel, moderated by attorney Dan Satorius includes attorney Susan H. Bodine (CDAS partner) and Brian Meece (RocketHub).Addresses what impact the anticipated new SEC rules on this form of crowdfunding might have for independent filmmakers.
• revenues & royalties 3:45pm – 5:00pm Co-presented by Cowan, DeBaets, Abrahams & Sheppard. Revenue sources for
documentary filmmakers are evolving. Once-reliable sources like DVD and broadcast are giving way to VOD and other streaming opportunities. This panel, moderated by CDAS partner Andrea F. Cannistraci, explores this changing landscape and what filmmakers need to know to maximize their potential revenues and not lose out on royalties they’re owed. Panelists include CPA Fred Seigal and CDAS partner Marc H. Simon who will participate both as an attorney and a filmmaker (Nursery University, Unraveled) and other legal experts.”

If you film it, will they come? Completing your documentary is only half of the process—how do you get people to see it? If you’re focused on a social issue, how do you get those viewers to do something about it? Today’s panels explore exhibition and outreach.
• meet the distributors 10:30am – 11:45am While the avenues for getting your film out in the world have increased, the theatrical release
remains the brass ring for many filmmakers. With fierce competition for theatre screens and audience attention, what do theatrical distributors look for in documentaries? Ryan Werner (IFC Films/Sundance Selects), Eamonn Bowles (Magnolia Pictures), Nancy Gerstman (Zeitgeist Films), Richard Lorber (Kino Lorber), Paul Marchant (First Run Features), and Ryan Krivoshey (The Cinema Guild) weigh in.
• d.i.y. theatrical 12:15pm – 1:30pm Increasingly, recognizing the challenges of traditional theatrical distribution, documentary
filmmakers are deciding to tackle it on their own. The rise of D.I.Y. or hybrid distribution has opened a space for films to find audiences that may otherwise not have had a chance to play in theatres. But filmmakers don’t need to do it completely alone. Experts Richard Abramowitz (Abramorama), Jim Browne (Argot Pictures), Wendy Lidell (International Film Circuit), and Caitlin Boyle (Film Sprout) explore the challenges and benefits of alternative distribution.

• selling on digital Platforms 3:45pm – 5:00pm We spend more and more of our time online, so it makes sense that the audience for digital
content is also increasing. But it’s not as simple as just posting your film online—unless large numbers of people know it’s there, you’re not going to see much as a result.
