I am very happy to offer my encouragement to the Air-Jaldi Summit.

Improved access to the Internet is very important for the Tibetan people, and for all peoples of the developing world.

By itself Internet’s can not feed the poor, defend the oppressed or protect those subject to natural disasters, but by keeping us informed it can allow those of us who have the opportunity to give whatever help we can.

World Summit for Free Information Infrastructures (WSFII)

• Held this year in Dharamsala, India• The ultimate goal of WSFII is to disseminate the knowledge and

skills of how to set up Community Networks for providing Internet Access in developing countries at no or very low cost

• The 4 day conference and 10 day workshop fees were $ 145.— (including lunches and refreshments)

• Presentations are available on: http://resources.airjaldi.com/?page_id=5

Principle of the Summits

• Install a community network

• Hold the conference and workshops

• Leave all network gear for the community

• At Dharamsala, the host installed his network 3 days after the spectrum was provided license-exempt– Interconnects thousands of computers within difficult mountainous

terrain, covering a radius of about 50km.

– Provides broadband Internet access, VoIP telephony, file sharing, off-site backup and video based applications.

– A wide-area wireless mesh network in and around Dharamsala which:

Also in developed countries

• In Denmark 95 % of the people live within a Broadband distribution point

• They are connected to 1600 DSL exchanges

• To connect the last 5 % (rural areas) they need an additional 4600 DSL exchanges

• No economic forces to to install those

• In Djursland 25 % of the population could not be connected
