Janice Sharp from Ellistown was agonised by back pain and virtually chair-bound. She thought that enjoying life was over for her.The 70-year-old former cleric had been prescribed a cocktail of drugs by her GP to try to combat the agony that ripped across her shoulder blades, but to no effect. She was desperate, so in November she went for acupuncture by doctor Ye at Herbal Healing in Coalville. Now she has her life back, thanks to a course of treatment by the renowned specialist in Belvoir Road.Janice had been suffering on and off for many years but recently the pain had become totally debilitating and she found herself unable to go out, prepare meals or even play with her adored grandchildren. She says: “I was in agony. I’d had scans and tests with GP which showed nothing, so they put it down to muscular pain and gave me various drugs, none of which worked.“I was on Tramadol, Codeine, Ibuprofen and morphine but all they did was make me sleep. I was in tears and thought, I might as well not be alive.”Desperate for help, she turned to Doctor Ye

and now is virtually pain-free. Janice is advising everyone in pain for whatever reason to waste no more time and to contact his clinic in Belvoir Road.“I rang them in November, they saw me straight away, and five treatments in, by Christmas eve I was cooking sausage rolls!”Now on her ninth session, Janice adds: “I wish I had seen Doctor Ye sooner! For two years all I did was sit

with a hot water bottle across my back – even on holiday in Tenerife in 28 degrees on a sun lounger, I still needed my hot water bottle.“I had tried everything, except acupuncture because I was a bit scared of needles. I needn’t have worried as they don’t hurt and I even feel relaxed with them in.”Janice has discovered what many others know already. “Nothing is too much trouble for this clinic, they are kind, understanding and professional. I cannot sing their praises enough.”“I advise anyone in doubt to pick up the phone like I did and ring them.”Herbal Healing Acupuncture Clinic is to be found at Belvoir House,Belvoir Road, Coalville, and is happy to take calls at any time on 01530 810888.

Established 2004

No-one expected the winter of 1947 to be so severe; the beginning of January had a recorded temperature of 14C. However, on the 23rd of January, it started to snow and somewhere in the country, it snowed for the next 55 days. The snow drifted and villages and communities were cut off. Roads and the railways were impassable and getting to and from work was extremely difficult. On the 27th February the temperature dropped to -21C and March came in like a lion with more snow and gales.Food was still on ration and snow drifts meant deliveries couldn’t get through. The government rationed coal and stockpiled coal at the local pits was frozen solid and couldn’t be moved.People still had to try and get to work. An employee at one of the Barwell shoe factories tells us, “We were put on the dole for two weeks, but we had to start digging out of Ibstock. The work’s bus took us each morning to where we had dug the day before and we would start digging again.” The photographs show men clearing the snow in Bagworth; maybe trying to get access to the mine. Mee’s Bakery tried to keep up with the demand for bread and went around Ibstock delivering on his sledge. A young man told us there was great excitement when word got through that the Co-op bread van had got as far as Hugglescote, so he and some friends walked there to buy bread.Life in Ibstock still went on. The Coalville Times, dated 21st February, reported that more snow had fallen. Pisca Lane was closed to traffic and only one side of Station Road was open with the snow on either side four feet deep. Social life continued, as the Times reported that functions at the Scout Hall went on as usual, although access was through a narrow channel cut through a great drift of snow in front of the Hall. On Saturday a dance was organised by the Youth Guild, which was well patronised by young and old alike. The weekly Whist drives run by the Toc H had to be cancelled, owing to fuel shortages. Shrove Tuesday was celebrated by a popular old-time dance at the Working Men’s Club. This was organised by the ladies committee of Ibstock Town Cricket Club in aid of the new pavilion fund.Although there were some events to brighten the days, it is difficult to imagine how people coped. Many questions were raised in Parliament as to how the country was coping with this phenomenon. When asked what was being done to alleviate the suffering of the people, one Government minister said that amongst various measures being put in place, one would be to issue every household with a knitting pattern to knit themselves a balaclava!Any recollections or photographs would be very welcome. Do you recognise anyone digging in the snow? Does anyone remember any talk about the balaclava knitting pattern?

LET IT SNOW! (but hopefully not like this!)

Students at Dixie Grammar School, Market Bosworth, have started a new initiative to reduce still further any school waste which cannot currently be recycled.Dixie Waste Warriors has been set up by students, teachers and parents of the school with the purpose of collecting all manner of plastic products which cannot currently go into the council’s own recycling system. Dixie has already taken steps to reduce its single-use plastic products and under this latest initiative, even more products can be saved from landfill, such as crisp packets, contact lenses, plastic pens and highlighters.

Sponsored by one of the students’ parents, special bins have been placed around the school, into which all such products can now be placed. The Waste Warriors then have the weekly task of sorting this so it can be sent to the recycling company Terracycle. They, in turn, transform what would have been landfill, into plastic balls, which can be used to produce watering cans, coffee tables or even playground equipment.

Following their whole school assembly to promote their project to the student body, the Dixie Waste Warriors have big plans. They are aiming for the Eco School Award and individual “Green” Blue Peter Badges and also have plans to attend a Market Bosworth Parish Council meeting with the aim of introducing the scheme to the local community.

TerraCycle state that they are Eliminating the Idea of Waste® by recycling the “non-recyclable.” Whether it’s coffee capsules from your home, pens from a school, or plastic gloves from a manufacturing facility, TerraCycle can collect and recycle almost any form of waste. They partner with individual collectors, as well as major consumer product companies, retailers, manufacturers, municipalities, and small businesses across 20 different countries. With the public’s help, they are able to divert millions of pounds of waste from landfills and incinerators each month.

When Alan Wilson purchased the licence to operate a ChipsAway franchise in the area in 2012, he had no idea how successful the growth of the business would be. Now, some 7 years later the business, based in Ashby, has over 2,800 customers and has completed over 3,700 repairs right across their territory, which spans from Swadlincote, taking in Ibstock, Whitwick and Coalville and continues right through to Ratby, Groby and part of Glenfield.

Alan explains, “Our customer’s really value the option of having their car collected from home, or work and redelivered on the same day, with the ChipsAway lifetime guarantee coming as standard with the repair. We have two fully qualified technicians who are trained to the highest possible UK Industry Standards (IMI, ATA & BVRLA). This ensures our clients come back to us on a repeat basis, thanks to their confidence in the high standards that we work to. Also the good people of Ibstock who paraded with us or turned up to cheer everyone on. Without them, there really would have been no Christmas Carnival at all.

This year was partly about testing the waters and everyone involved was excited about how well it went and up for doing it all again next year. We would however, like a few more people to join us in organising Ibstock Christmas Carnival 2020. There will be an Annual General Meeting at Ibstock Palace on Friday, 6th March, where we will regroup, welcome new members and get planning some lovely things for next time. More details will appear soon on the Ibstock Christmas Carnival Facebook page and in The Community Voice magazine, so wat ch this space.

The Ibstock Christmas Carnival Committe

Ibstock Christmas CarnivalWe think it is safe to say that Ibstock Christmas Carnival was a resounding success. The weather couldn’t have been better and although we can’t claim credit for that, the whole of Ibstock should be giving itself a huge ‘pat on the back’ for everything else.

We would like to thank the marshals for giving up their time and energy to make sure that the parade moved safely through the village and Pete the First Responder for providing us with first aid cover for the event.

Then there are the many sponsors, who either provided money, services or expertise to help us organise and run the event:

The popular vote for ‘The Community Voice Ibstock High Street Christmas Windows competition’ was a very close run result, as the majority of shops and residences on the High Street decked out the windows in festive fashion. The route for the Christmas Parade look wonderful, with lots of fairy lights and tinsel shining in the homes and shops, adding a splash of Christmas magic to the event. The overall winner of the competition was Halls Electricals, who went all out and not only decorated one window, but all 3 of their windows; one display included a working model train set and snowy village scene and a second displayed a traditional nativity scene. Thank you to everyone who made such a great effort. It all succeeded in giving the village a real ‘festive feel’!

Once again, the people of Ibstock and surrounding area have shown just how big their hearts are as they have raised in excess of £13,600 for the 2019 Poppy appeal.

This wonderful amount, which has beaten previous amounts raised, was presented to the head office of the Royal British Legion along with a further donation of £500. This was raised from the Poppyfields festival an event produced by the Ibstock Ex–Forces Fund in association with the Royal British Legion

A hearty ‘well done’ to all the people who were involved in both projects - without all their hard work and sacrifice none of this would have happened!

A nod to the 'Noddy Bike'The Velocette LE (Little Engine) is a motorcyclemanufactured by Veloce Company, Birmingham from 1948until the company went into liquidation in 1971.

The LE has three variations, of which my LE is a Mark 3, 200cc, water cooled, shaft driven model (See photo). Initially intended as a mass market, easy-to-ride,quiet and clean motorcycle, the LE failed to gain popularity and sales weremodest. However, the police force soon recognised the benefits of the LE andbegan to use them for the transportation of 'beat bobbies'. The nickname 'NoddyBike' was down to the Police Constable nodding their heads to acknowledge asenior officer, whilst remaining in control of the machine with both hands firmly

on the handlebars. The LE failed to attract private ownership and when the police force moved into Panda Cars, the Veloce factory wasno longer profitable and sadly closed in 1971. The Metropolitan Police managed to run their last LE until 1974.

The LE is now a bike for enthusiasts and, like Marmite, either loved or hated. I love Marmite!Andy Playle

Here at the Community Voice, we would be delighted to receive stories from any of our readers regarding their cherished vehicles and bikes, to be included in our new 'Classic Corner' feature.

Origins and symbolism of the wedding ringThe tradition of wearing a wedding ring is so old that it is unclear who exactly started it. According to somehistorians the ancient Egyptians started using wedding rings as early as 3000 BC. However, the circle as thesymbol of eternity, with no beginning or end, seems to have held strong significance, not only to the Egyptians, but for many other ancient cultures.

The hole in the centre of the ring also had meaning. It was not just considered a space, but rather a gateway or door, leading to things and eventsboth known and unknown. To give another person a ring signifies never-ending and immortal love. Throughout history and cultures, wedding ringshave been worn on different fingers including the thumb and on both the left and right hands. The ancient pagan Romans practiced the tradition ofgiving both engagement and wedding rings. They wore the ring on the third finger of the left hand because they believed that a vein from this fingerruns directly to the heart. Although scientists have since shown this to be actually false, this myth still remains regarded by many as the number onereason rings are worn on the fourth finger in our culture today. In the Roman tradition, rather than offering a ring to a woman as a symbol of love, they awarded them as a symbol of ownership. Roman men would “claim” their woman with the giving of a ring. Roman betrothal rings were latermade of iron and symbolised strength and permanence. It is also said that the Romans were the first to engrave their rings. It was not until about 860that the Christians used the ring in marriage ceremonies. Even then, it was not the simple plain band as we know it. It usually was highly decoratedwith engraved doves, lyres, or two linked hands. The Church discouraged such rings as ‘heathenish’ and around the 13th century wedding andbetrothal rings were considerably simplified and was described by a Bishop at the time as “a symbol of the union of hearts.”

Another theory thought to be behind the ring being placed on the left hand by Christians seems a little more plausible. Early Christian marriages hada ritual to wear the wedding ring in the third finger. As the priest recited during the binding ,”In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit”,he would take the ring and touch the thumb, the index finger, and the middle finger; then, while uttering “Amen”, he would place the ring on the ringfinger, which sealed the marriage. A more practically based theory is that the soft metal (traditionally gold for wedding rings) is less worn or injuredon the finger of the left hand, due to the fact that the majority of the world is right handed. Whatever the source or age of this tradition, the givingand receiving of a ring still remains a popular and powerful expression of love.

Please save and flatten your empty packets from any brand of crisp and leave them in the box at the reception in 57 High Street or under the coat stand at the Waggon and Horses. Thanks to Matt there for hosting a collection place. There is also a bag at the Palace, by the kitchen door.

Highly successful independent film group, Gatling Gun Productions, has moved back to it’s original roots in Ibstock. Due to expansion and increased activity, the team (who produce music videos and short and feature length films) needed a local headquarters for meetings, auditions and interviews. Their new premises on Ibstock High Street is helping them to achieve their aim of giving support to local people who are looking for the chance to get involved in the film industry. This could be in a wide range of areas in the profession, including script-writing, acting, camera work, sound engineering and crew experience. They are on hand with their production skills to assist local singers and performers who are looking to create and release a music video.

Being a ‘not- for-profit’ organisation enables them to keep their costs low, but as they still have bills to pay, they are always looking for sponsors. If you feel that your business would like to be involved with this fantastic local venture, please contact them on the email address below.

Local actors Stephen and Hannah Graham (Walters) have been very supportive. They introduced Gatling Gun to Warp Films which enable them to assist with work on Shane Meadows television production of the highly acclaimed series ‘The Virtues’.

Stephen (well-known for many film and television performances) has undertaken some filming with Gatling Gun and the crew agree that they learnt so much from him every time he was with them. Ian of Gatling Gun said, “It is always a great pleasure when Hannah and Stephen are involved, they give some brilliant and invaluable advice.”

Gatling Gun are currently working on a documentary for Alzheimer’s and Dementia with Alex Reid, who recently paid a visit to Ibstock to see the new studio and future projects in the pipe-line, including a series and a feature film.

SystmOnlineSystmOnline is our online access to your medical record. You can use it to book appointments, order regular medication, send us secure messages and even see some of your record. It’s available on computers and smart phones. We’ve now added some questionnaires to the system. These are forms that the doctors might ask you to fill in. For example, we have the Oxford knee score form (used if you have problems with your knee) and a smoking form to record how much or how few you smoke. Coming soon will be a form to measure if you are depressed and an Asthma questionnaire which you can use to let us know about your asthma symptoms. If you use SystmOnline to fill in these forms, or send us messages, the information goes straight into your patient record so it can be seen and acted on by the most appropriate person here at the surgery. This can save you having to come down to the surgery.

Doctor changesWe’re pleased to let patients know that both Dr Bhalla and Dr Luke will be working extra days at the practice this year. Dr Bhalla is working Thursdays, as well as Tuesdayand Wednesdays; and Dr Luke is working Tuesdays, as well as Monday, Wednesday morning and Friday.

FREE COLLECTION!

It was just after my 2 year probationary period when the C.I.D. typist, who I had chatted up on my first day, decided that the time had come for her to join the fight against crime. So, on Saturday, 22nd October 1955, we were married at Coalville Parish Church and after our honeymoon we moved into a police-rented house in the village where I was stationed. By this time the Police Force was becoming very modern and I was supplied with a Norman auto-bike, a 98cc pedal assisted motorised bike, which only needed assistance up steep hills otherwise it would cruise along at 15 miles per hour and normally this didn’t cause any problems. By this time my very large Alsatian dog, Kim, had joined Joyce and I in our new home and when I was on duty late at night Joyce would take him for a walk. However, he had become familiar with the sound of the auto-bike and unfortunately, if he heard the sound of the bike coming from the next village he would decide to come and meet me and would take off at a fast running pace, pulling a very unwilling Joyce behind him.

The police rented house which had been allocated to us had plenty of running water, especially when it rained. The guttering at the back of the house was all broken and unfortunately, the water ran down the wall, which turned the decor of back bedroom and the dining room below into a very nice shade of black mould. In view of this, after living in the house for about 6 months, we moved to a police-owned house in Coalville which was in a block of houses with a small office which had been built by the police. The houses were in the middle of a large housing estate and the office had been built for the use of the resident beat officers. Owning to the fact that the C.I.D. offices at the main police station were now too small it was decided that the staff would take over this office. This was very handy because Joyce only had to walk a few yards to the office, where she still worked as a C.I.D. typist. I continued to work the same 4 villages as before but the trusty auto-bike now had to travel further. It was whilst we were living at this house that our family increased with the arrival of our daughter Catherine.

A POLICEMAN’S LOT (can be a happy one!)Extracts from the memoirs of a retired local Policeman:

Here’s another installment in the exciting new series of stories by local author and illustrator, Rachel Greaves. Keeping in the Ruffle theme, the new tales follow a toy Ruffle and the adventures he has each month. Read on to find out more…

As before, each month there will be a word within the text. Just find the underlined, italic letters in capitals then re-arrange them to create this month’s word.

For more information about Ruffle’s storybooks visit www.ruffletheraildog.co.uk

Now available on YouTube – Ruffle’s walks: a series of short video stories

®

Try the Ruffle “Find the word” competition - this month’s word has 10 letters. The answer is on the inside back cover.

In addition to the short stories – ‘Ruffle’s Walks’, Ruffle’s series of story book adventures are available via the website - www.ruffletheraildog.co.uk priced at only £3.50 each incl. p&p. Ideal for under 5s to be read to and for more independent readers up to the age of approx 10 years - enjoyed by parents and grandparents! Each book can be individually signed – unique personalised gifts especially for Christmas or birthdays to encourage a love of reading and imagination!

Having been carried carefully back to the little boy’s home from the charity shop, Ruffle was quickly introduced to the rest of the toy dogs owned by the boy – various shapes, sizes and breeds, though None like Ruffle! Ruffle soon became the boy’s favourite and although the boy didn’t take Ruffle to school with him he did Include Ruffle in lots of games and adventures when he was home from school.

Not many days after Ruffle had arrived from the charity shop it began to snow! To the delight of all the pupils school was cancelled so children from the neighbourhood eagerly looked out sledges from the backs of Garages and sheds then made their way to the park where there was a slope just made for sledging!

The boy wrapped up warmly and chose Ruffle again from his toys then Tucked Ruffle safely into his coat pocket as he guided his sledge to where his friends had gathered. The little slope wasn’t particularly steep but to the young sledge riders it seemed almost like a mountain! They soon positioned their sledges at the top, sat on as comfortably as wooden sledges would allow then pushed each other off to get a Good start.

Ruffle could feel the excitement from the safety of the boy’s pocket as the Sledge rushed down the hill smoothing the white glistening blanket with its sturdy runners. Ruffle also soon felt the thud as they landed in a heap at the bottom after being thrown from the sledge!

Sledging can be quite tiring work Especially pulling a sledge uphill so very soon the boy became hot and decided to take off his gloves. He pushed them Into the pocket with Ruffle. After an exhilarating morning sledging with friends it was time to return home for lunch. The rope on the sledge felt wet and cold so the boy felt in his pocket for his gloves. But as well as pulling his gloves out, unbeknown to the boy, he also pulled Ruffle from his pocket. Ruffle landed with a silent PLOP in the deep snow. The boy continued to pull his sledge back home not Noticing the deep Ruffle-shaped hole in the snow where Ruffle lay.

As the children walked home the excited shouting and Laughter soon disappeared and the park became very quiet in the white stillness. The park seemed empty - except for an old man wrapped up against the cold air…

Hollie Jordan DSFH, HPD, AfSFH (Reg) – Clinical Hypnotherapist and Psychotherapist. AfSFH Reg no. 1329. DBS checked and Insured.

We have been conditioned from a young age to look outside of ourselves for fulfilment and satisfaction when in reality until we truly learn to love ourselves we will always end up in the wrong relationships; placing an awful amount of importance in the hands of someone else to give us what we think we need. This article looks at some tips to help you on your path to truly loving yourself:

1. Acceptance – it truly is time to let go of comparing yourself to others and accept who you are; warts and all. Its only when we truly accept ourselves as we are that true self love can be had. You can accept yourself and strive for improvement but never change who you are! You are the only you there is and ever will be – let that sink in for a moment!

2. Realise your worth – If you base your self-worth on what others think of you then you are having your power over to others and become dependent on a source outside of yourself for validation. The only opinion that should matter about yourself is yours!

3. Be willing – Commit to changing the way you have moved through past relationships. Look at what hasn’t worked so far and actively commit to understanding who you need to be to love yourself fully and to attract a partner who can also love you for your authentic self.

4. Forgive yourself - for all those times that you may have lost a significant piece of yourself to find another; be it compromising who you were or allowing yourself to be used or treated badly. Truly forgiving past mistakes and poor judgement in past relationships will help you to open your heart ready for new experiences.

5. Spoil Yourself – Why? Because you deserve it! Nourish your body with healthy food, write 10 things that you admire about yourself, stand in front of the mirror and give yourself a compliment, get yourself dressed up and take yourself out on a date and finally, indulge yourself in the things that create passion and excitement in your life!

Never underestimate the power and value in nurturing the relationship that you have with yourself.

If you would like help with your confidence, self esteem or are struggling to let go of a past relationship; hypnotherapy is very effective in helping with a variety of issues. To book in for your FREE initial consultation call or text Hollie on 07817 907314.

I cannot recommend the following book enough for anyone who needs to fall in love with themselves again and/or needs a self-esteem boost:

‘You are a Badass’ by Jen Sincero.

LOVE YOURSELF THIS VALENTINES DAYBy Hollie Jordan, Clinical Hypnotherapist and Psychotherapist

Whether you have a date for this Valentines Day or not; it is time to turn up the heat in the relationship that you will have until the end of time: the one with yourself!

PS 4384 Jayne DOLBYNeighbourhood Sgt: Bardon Hill NN45, Coalville Police Station, Broad Street, Coalville, Leicestershire LE67 3PU. Tel: 101. www.leics.police.uk

Here’s their introductions...

PC 237 Emma Holmes has been with Leicestershire Police since 2010. Throughout her time with the Police she have been part of a number of teams including fast response, child abuse investigations and neighbourhood policing. Prior to joining the Police Emma has always had a strong interest in the rural community and she is extremely excited to become part of the new Rural Crime Team in North West Leicestershire.

After undergoing some training throughout the last year, Emma has built upon her knowledge in rural/wildlife crime, and she is very much looking forward to continually improving her skills, getting more involved within the rural community and increasing confidence through investigative and proactive work.

PCSO Tony Gallagher joined the police in 2003 and worked in a variety of location across the force including the city and county . He was the first PCSO in the North

West starting in Coalville town centre beat winning PCSO of the year and meeting the Prime Minister in Downing Street.

Tony was part of the original Rural Watch delivery group leading to the launch at Melton Market on the 23/2/16.

Tony has been Involved in the set up and advancement of Project Griffin (Terrorism Awareness) for 5 years representing the force at the national conference and organising the official launch for Leicestershire Police at EMA.

Tony Returned to Coalville as part of the Bardon Beat Team being the SPOC for Rural Watch which includes church, heritage and farm.

PC 237 Emma-Louise HolmesWork mobile – 07967 761 392Tony (Michael) GallagherWork Mobile: 07870904816

Rural Crime has a significant impact on the area, last year it was a Community Safety Partnership priority and it may become one again in the new year depending on the CSP setting event in February.

The rural community feel very targeted and often confidence in the police is low, our crime figures support there is an issue on the area.

We currently have 2 force Wildlife officers who have invested time and training on the NPA will be utilising their skills to full potential in this role.

We have held rural crime events that have been well attended and it is clear to see there is an appetite for working together with the rural community and partners.

The team will consist of PC Emma Holmes and PCSO Tony Gallagher, with line management from PS 4300 Lindsey Booth.

The aim is for them to oversee all rural crime investigations, increase community confidence and develop intelligence (including cross-border).

Following a meeting with the East Midlands National Farmers Unit manager, police will be taking more Victim personal statements around the huge impact some of the crimes are having on the farmers.

Officers will attend hotspot areas and offer crime prevention, increase training awareness to staff around animal and machinery handling and familiarisation with the assistance of the NFU with the new policing model.

They will hold an interactive rural event with key partners holding stands to deliver support and advice. To be confirmed

Longer term we are looking at running pro-active intelligence led operations with the use of our current cross border contacts.

As of the 6th January the North West Leicestershire neighbourhood team will be piloting a Rural Crime team.
