Benefit on Investment concept
Traditional evaluation system like
ROI or cost benefit analysis focuses on
the return entrepreneur get against an
investment
But in case of social enterprise like
information centre the benefit goes to
the community people not the
entrepreneur
To asses this initiative we
introduced Benefit on Investment
(BOI), which monetize the benefit
community people get and consider
during calculation.
D.Net evaluated its 4 telecentres
using this concept and found that
the total benefit was 4.64 times
higher. Which means if you invest
£1 the community will get benefit
of £ 4.64.
Statistics since September 2005
Total beneficiaries from Pallitathya Kendra: 145,008
• Female 48 per cent & Male: 52 per cent
Livelihood Information recipients: 73 per cent
• Health: 43 per cent
• Agriculture: 18 per cent
• Education: 17 per cent
• Law and human rights: 10 per cent
• Government service: 4 per cent
• Non-farm activities: 4 per cent
• Awareness: 2 per cent
A number of cases have been developed by the Pallitathya initiatives • Poor farmers are able to save huge loss of crops
• Students benefited from timely delivered education information
• Women benefited from law and rights related information services
• Woman and physically challenged people benefited from the door step services.
• In the recent study, it was found that the benefit to the community people is 18.33 times higher than the investment made for setup and operation of PK (Benefit on Investment exercise).

Global Impact Study
• To understand and map the variety of public access landscapes and models around the world.
• To identify and understand the main social and economic impacts of public access to ICT.
• To deliver preliminary evidence on the magnitude of social and economic benefits of public access, and the costs involved in providing public access.
• To develop a set of rigorous methodologies and test these through focused
field studies in three countries to prepare for the longitudinal study. • To coordinate research activities with the impact assessment teams in
Global Libraries countries and develop a strategy that makes optimal use of
these researchers in relation to this project.

Evaluation using OM
GEM is a guide to integrating a gender analysis into evaluations of initiatives that use Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) for social change.
GEM provides a means for determining whether ICTs are really improving women's lives and gender relations as well as promoting positive change at the individual, institutional, community and broader social levels.
The guide provides users with an overview of the evaluation process (including links to general evaluation resources) and outlines suggested strategies and methodologies for incorporating a gender analysis throughout the evaluation process. GEM does not contain step-by-step instructions to conducting evaluations.
GEM is not simply an evaluation tool. It can also be used to ensure that a gender concerns are integrated into a project planning process.
Finally, GEM is an evolving guide! In its practical use we encourage critical thoughts and creative adaptations. Throughout this web site you will find forms where you can submit your comments, suggestions, stories, strategies, or resources.
