E1 Transmission Format
• A Frame;
• An E1 system consists of 32 time slots which contain the 64 kbit/s consecutive samples. This is called a frame.
• The Transmission Rate;
• When combined together 32 time slots x 64 Kbits/s = 2048 Kbits/s which is the speed of the E-1 transmission system.
• ITU-T Specifications;
• ITU-T Rec. G.703
– Bit rate: 2048 Kbit/s
– Line Code: HDB3 (high density bipolar 3)
• Time Slot 16 : Frames 2 through 15 are the same as frame 1• Time Slot 0: Even number frames 2 through 14 are the same as frame 0• Time Slot 0: Odd number frames 3 through 15 are the same as frame 1
1 = bit set to 1 0 = bit set to 0 1/0 = speech / signalling (varying data) X = unassigned bit

PIA Replacement Tips
• Can not be managed by MSTE• Always check strapping of removed unit and change where different on
replacement unit• ON/OFF switch is physically locked into ON position by a retaining bar. However
it is a toggle type and therefore it is possible that it has ‘tripped’ to the OFF state while physically remaining in the ON position. Releasing from the retaining bar and resetting trip is obtained by physically moving position to OFF and back to ON.

• Operation of service LEDs
• The red service LED of the MCU is lit when there is a serious fault in the equipment. If the MCU is powered up and the red LED still stays on, the unit should be replaced.
• The red LED on a DYNACARD (PIU) unit indicates that either there is a serious fault in the unit or the unit has not been added to the equipment configuration.
• Note: The red LED of any unit is lit when an external power supply fails to provide the operating voltages required.
• The yellow service LED is lit when the unit has detected a fault outside the equipment (the incoming signal may be faulty, for example). Some of the services may still be functioning quite normally and further actions are needed for locating the fault.
• The green service LED is lit when the unit is accessed by the Service Terminal or MSTE, or the Nokia DCNA
• Connection to the DCNA does not activate the green LED in all cases.

DN2 Branching
• The DN 2 uses Tables to set up communications. These tables consist of different branches to allow this. the following are common branching types used within connect:
• Ordinary through connections (B-type)• Digital common channels (C-type)• Loopback (L-type)• Protection switch (Y-type)• Mask (M-type)• Examples:-

Connect to DN2 Node
1. Open DN2 Manager from the start menu or from a desktop shortcut.
2. Select the ‘Connect’ button to open the ‘Nokia connection tool’ window.
3. Select the type of connection and enter the address of the DN2 to connect to.

Once connected to the DN2 node, the manager should look similar to this.
Any installed cards will be shown.(BPU/EBPU or PIA are not shown)
Synchronization
To check/set synchronization select the synchronization button.
The synchronization window will open.
Here you can set the priority list for the timing sources.
Send to Node
Any changes made to settings within the DN2 Node Manager must be sent to the Node for the settings to come into effect.
This is done using the ‘Send to Node’ button.
Until this is done the settings are only be stored in the Node Manager.
Port Settings
To check/set IU2 Port setting select the ‘Ports view’ button or ‘Configure…Ports view’ via the menu bar.
The settings for all IU2 ports that are installed will be displayed.
Double click inside a ports column to change settings.
Changing Port settings
From this window the setting for the individual port can be set.The interface can be brought in/out of use and any TS0 settings for embedded management or Loop synchronization set.

Select a Table to add cross connects
To add/view cross connects we need to select a Table to edit.
Open the ‘Connection Tables view’.
To make the cross connects part of the live network then the ‘Activated’ table must be edited. Double click on the table to edit

Alarms
By selecting the ‘Alarms view’ button a list of any alarms on the DN2 will be displayed, including those of any Dynacards that are installed.
‘Save as’ function
The ‘Save as’ function is used to save cross-connect/port settings made on the DN2 and allows Off-line configuration with the node manager.
Open a saved configuration file
To open a previously saved configuration select the ‘Open’ button and select the ‘.dn2’ file for the saved node.
Off-line Configuration
‘File Connection’ displays in the manager window and the cursor displays ‘file’ to show that you are configuring from file.
Backup the DN2 Node
The backup facility allows us to save the complete configuration of the DN2 node (including Dynacard settings) and restore it to a new or repaired node in a catastrophic incident.
Restore the DN2 Node
The Restore facility allows us to restore the complete configuration of a DN2 node to a new or repaired node.
