Example questions and guidance

How will you manage any ethical issues? Questions to consider:

• Have you gained consent for data preservation and sharing?

• How will you protect the identity of participants if required? e.g. anonymisation

• How will sensitive data be handled to ensure it is stored and transferred securely?

Guidance:Ethical issues affect how you store data, who can see/use it and how long it is kept. Managing ethical concerns may include: anonymisation of data; referral to departmental or institutional ethics committees; and formal consent agreements.

You should show that you are aware of any issues and have planned accordingly. If you are carrying out research involving human participants, you must also ensure that consent is requested to allow data to be shared and reused.

Customising DMPonlineDeciding what you need:

1. Does your institution require that researchers write Data Management Plans, even if their funder does not? If so, what information are researchers asked to provide?

2. Do DMPs submitted to research funders supply the information your institution asks for (if any), or are there additional questions that you want to ask?

3. What guidance, examples and suggested answers can you provide to help researchers write DMPs?

Edinburgh policy requirements

“All new research proposals must include research data management plans or protocols that explicitly

address data capture, management, integrity, confidentiality, retention, sharing and publication.”

www.ed.ac.uk/is/research-data-policy

- Are these your 7 headings / sections? - How about using the STFC questions?- What does IS needs to know?

Universities are able to:

• Ask any questions they want answers to– via their own template – by adding questions to funder templates

• Display guidance to help researchers respond– Institutional– Local (tailored to different Colleges/Schools/Units)– Can apply across the board or just to certain funder questions

• Provide examples and suggested answers
