Tennis News Meet the Staff: Glenn Steinberg, Indoor Cycling InstructorNormally Glenn is the interviewer for this column, but I wanted to interview him because of his inspiring comeback to begin teaching indoor cycling with us again here at HSAC, plus he’s a very interesting guy. ~ By Sandy Fahey

Glenn was born in Los Angeles and was surrounded by some Hollywood types, such as Robert Mitchum’s son, Jim, who lived with them. Glenn’s brother was in the music industry with Jim and this allowed Glenn to meet Elvis and the Everley Brothers. Growing up Glenn enjoyed sports all year round even though they had to play on an asphalt field at his school in the LA area. Very typical growing up in a big city.

After a short stint at Santa Monica College, Glenn was drafted into the Army during the Vietnam War. After two years, Glenn was happy to be free and chose to make traveling around the world his priority. Glenn worked odd jobs and did well at saving. He drove his van to Homer, Alaska in the summer of 1971. This

was also the time he started painting, all self-taught. After he ditched the van, he began hitchhiking around the world. New York, England, Scotland, France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Austria, Yugoslavia, Greece, Bulgaria, Turkey, Iran, Afghani-stan.... then buses/trains/river boats/walking Kabul, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Burma, Thailand, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, back to USA via Hawaii. All along the way playing American music on his guitar for folks he met. He was a mere 24 years old backpacking and living the dream. While in Sri Lanka, he met a surfer guy who taught him his next passion, surfing. He fell in love with it. From India to Burma, Thailand to Korea, Tokyo to Honolulu and this was where he stayed. Hawaii is the perfect place to surf, paint beautiful pictures (one sold for $10,000) and fall in love with his wife Emma.

Glenn married Emma in 1990 and they had their daughter, who just turned 21, Megan, in 1993. In 1994, they made the move to Edmonds and haven’t left since. Glenn joined HSAC in 1999 and has been a staple here ever since. Glenn began instruct-ing at HSAC in 2008. He was always a bike guy and loved the spin classes. Unfortunately, in October of 2013, Glenn was diagnosed with cancer and was given only a 10-20% chance of survival. He had to give up his beloved indoor cycle classes for about 16 months. After a good hard fight Glenn beat that cancer and is now on the road to recovery, cancer-free and getting healthier and healthier every day. So healthy, he is back to teaching one spin class every other week and hoping to add more in the future. Glenn’s doctors attribute his success to the great shape Glenn was already in when he was diagnosed and he feels thankful for the years of exercise he had done.

Glenn kept his friends informed all along the way during his journey with emails of humor, strength and humility and he called it his “Cancer Cure Tour”. Post tour his wife and him have enjoyed a few fabu-lous trips to celebrate his success. They took a road trip on the west coast all the way to LA, stopping at the Redwoods in Northern California. Few months ago, they went to Manhattan, New York and had a fabulous time, would recommend going there to anybody. Next stop is back to Oahu, Hawaii. Feels like a reunion of some sort and closure to an amazing comeback!

What Glenn likes about HSAC is all the choices that we have to offer the members. Quality of staff is admirable. The members are top shelf of Edmonds. He thinks it’s a great environment and always a pleasure to be a part of it. I know I enjoy being Glenn’s friend and coworker and couldn’t be more proud. You may see Glenn tool-ing around town on his Harley, which he enjoys taking on road trips in the summers. Wonder where this world traveler will go this year?

Come see Glenn on Wednesday evenings at 6:30pm for a H.I.I.T. cycle class every other week (alternating with Dimitri). What is H.I.I.T.? A high intensity interval training class that will get you in and out within 30 minutes.
