High-Temperature Insulator Sheets and Locating Rings
High-Temperature Insulator Sheets (HTIS) for Plastics Moulds and Die-Cast Dies
n Asbestos-free materialn High compression strengthn Machinable with high-speed cutting tools
DME High-Temperature Insulator Sheets are used on moulds and dies between the top clamping plate and the stationary platen, and between the bottom of the ejector housing and the movable platen. The thermal insulating properties of this unique asbestos-free, glass-reinforced polymer composite inhibit heat transfer from the mould to the platen, or from the platen to the mould (depending on the application), which helps conserve energy and prolong machine life. These sheets have excellent non-deformation characteristics and a compressive strength (340,000kPa @ 24C), which is higher than asbestos and mica materials. Compression moulded for high impact strength, they are supplied micro-finished top and bottom, parallel within .05mm.

OUTIN
Typical applications
Bubbler Tubes
available in brass or 304 stainless steel
DME Bubbler Tubes are used for cooling cores in moulds or dies. They are supplied threaded at both ends, thus permitting two threaded tubes to be cut from the 18" length supplied. They can be used as replacement tubes in Cascade Water Junctions.
Typical application
Brass Diverting Plugs and Rod for Steam and Waterlines
Brass Bubbler Tubes BT
304 Stainless Steel Bubbler Tubes BTS
Brass Diverting Plugs BF
Brass Rod BFR(1/8 dia. x 18" long)
DME Brass Diverting Plugs and Rods are used to redirect water flow through waterlines drilled in a mould or die.
The plugs are pushed into the waterline, and the rods are cut to appropriate lengths to serve as spacers or stops between the plugs. All plugs are proportionately longer than their diameter to ensure that they will pass by intersecting waterlines without twisting into them.

For cascade-type cooling applications, the Jiffy-Tite Cascade Water Junctions provide the utmost in versatility and ease of use. Their compact design makes them ideal for cooling inserted cores or spot cooling in hard to reach areas of moulds or dies. They can be rotated a full 360 without affecting their positive Jiffy-Tite seal and are easily connected and disconnected even when installed internally.
Final location of the ports on the body of the Water Junction can be accurately predetermined, thus ensuring proper lateral alignment with pipe clearance holes. Waterlines may be connected to the same side or opposing sides of the Water Junction. A slot on the end of the Water Junction body indicates port position and can be turned with a screwdriver to align the ports with pipe clearance holes.
The brass tube has the rigidity to maintain uniform spacing inside the water channel and is threaded into the body for firm support.
NOTES: 1. bubbler tubes may be used as replacements in water Junctions above.
2. the 200, 300 and 500 series water Junctions are equipped with 200, 300 and 500 series viton seals respectively, rated at 1,379 kpa and suitable for temperatures up to 204C.

DME Cascade Water Junctions are ideal for cooling plastics moulds and die-cast dies where drilled waterlines through the block are not possible due to interference with ejector pins, sprue puller pins, etc.
The brass tube has the rigidity to maintain uniform spacing inside the water channel and is threaded into the body for firm support. Waterlines may be connected to the same side or opposing sides of the brass hexagonal body.
The Nipple Type Water Junction provides low-cost rigid installation. The 2" long pipe nipple can be replaced with a longer pipe nipple to suit the application.
The Jiffy-Tite Socket Type is more easily connected and disconnected when mould is set-up, transported or stored. The socket is equipped with internal Viton seals (P300-8).

Metric Heat Pipes
1. Insert hole diameter should be 0.1 to 0.2mm larger than the heat pipe
2. Heat pipe conductive grease must be used to fill any clearance to improve heat conductivity
Reduce Maintenance and Operating CostsThe increased waterline diameter, coolant velocity and heat capacity effectively eliminate scale formation, calcium deposits and the plugging up of small waterlines and ports. In addition, Heat Pipes operate in any coolant without corroding.
Upgrade Existing Moulds and DiesHeat Pipes effectively solve cooling, cycle time or part quality problems in existing moulds. They can be retrofitted as replacements for bubblers or baffles and to provide heat transfer in previously uncooled areas.
Salvage Damaged Moulds and DiesIn certain applications, Heat Pipes can even be used to salvage or repair moulds that would otherwise have to be scrapped or extensively reworked.
Heat Pipe Conductive GreaseSilver Heat Conductive GreaseThis grease contains micro particles of silver to provide a thermal resistance of 4.75C in/watt. The grease is supplied in a 5cc plastic syringe. (DME recommends this product because it has 8 times lower thermal resistance than the copper equivalent).
Copper Heat Conductive GreaseThis grease contains micro particles of copper to provide a thermal resistance of 38C in/watt. The grease is supplied in a 5cc plastic syringe.

Heat Pipes
How and where heat pipes workThe DME Heat Pipe is a heat transfer device specifically designed for optimal performance in plastic injection moulds. It consists of a vacuum-tight copper tube containing a wick and a non-toxic working fluid. One end of the heat pipe is an evaporator, the opposite end is a condenser. Thermal energy is gathered at the evaporator end, vaporizing the working fluid. This vapor then travels through the Heat Pipe to the condenser end. At the condenser end the vapor condensates back into a liquid, giving up its latent heat in the process. To complete the cycle the condensed liquid then travels along the wick, via capillary action, back to the evaporator section. This process repeats itself continuously, transferring heat many times faster than pure copper.
How heat pipes are usedAvailable in a variety of standard lengths and diameters, DME Heat Pipes are used in cores, core slides, cavities and other areas of a mould or die requiring cooling or controlled temperatures. Commonly used in place of bubblers, baffles, fountains or blades, Heat Pipes transfer heat rapidly to the coolant, rather than requiring the coolant to flow into the heated area. They are also used to transfer heat to a cooler portion of the mould (which serves as a heat sink) or to open air, thereby permitting cooling of otherwise inaccessible areas and eliminating potential coolant leakage.
Benefits of heat pipesCool moulds faster and reduce cycle timeThe Heat Pipes ability to cool moulds faster and thus reduce cycle time is due to a number of factors. First, waterlines throughout the entire mould can be larger in diameter, permitting a higher coolant velocity, which transfers heat faster. Second, the larger volume of fluid flowing through the waterline results in a lower overall coolant temperature rise, so that the last Heat Pipe in the system will transfer heat as efficiently as the first. Third, the extension of the Heat Pipe into the waterline promotes turbulent flow, which transfers
heat faster than laminar flow. Fourth, the ability to transfer heat away from inaccessible areas improves the overall cooling rate and reduces cycle time, even if extension into a remote waterline is impractical or impossible.
Improve Part qualityAs the Heat Pipe transfers heat to the coolant, air or mould com-ponent, it also dissipates heat evenly along its entire length. This isothermal action provides faster and more uniform cooling, thus eliminating hot spots, which cause sink marks, pulling and spotting.
Simplify Mould Design and Lower CostsWith Heat Pipes, waterline design is greatly simplified since coolant flow into the heated area of the mould is not required. In addition, the ability to locate heat conductors in areas inaccessible to other cooling devices can further simplify the overall mould design. In most cases, the machining and construction time required for the mould is reduced, lowering mouldmaking costs.

The plastic baffle is installed in standard gun-drilled cooling channels and CNC-standard NPT-F holes. n Recommended tolerance for cooling channels is +/-0.05 n Clearance must be provided between end of baffle and end of drilled channel to provide adequate flow n One-inch increments are marked on each side of the baffle blade n Baffle blades may be cut or snapped at marked one-inch increments to obtain preferred dimension (smooth the top edge after proper sizing)n Do not expose the baffle to flame cutting
The plastic baffle has a moulded wiper on both sides of the blade that travels the length of the blade. This allows the thin wiper to make contact with the inside walls of the water line thereby sealing them off and prohibiting blow-by. n Make sure the thread seal tape is not damaged n Turn the baffle clockwise when installing so the baffle blade bends the wipers over as they are installed into the water line. This seals the plastic blade to the water line holes.n Do not thread and unthread the baffles, as this will diminish the sealing and performance properties
During tightening, the Allen wrench will become snug, indicating that the plug is sealed to the hole. n Is it not recommended to force tightening beyond the wrench becoming snugn Do not use a hammer to push the blade into the channel
If, for any reason, cooling channel cleaning is required, replace the baffle with a new one.
If the hex is damaged, a hand drill may be used to remove it.

In fluid mechanics, the Reynolds number is the ratio of inertial forces to viscous forces and quantifies the relative importance of these two types of forces for given flow conditions.
n Ensure good coolant flow rates (Reynolds number of 4000 minimum. See Reference Table below.)
n The golden rule for optimum cooling is to maximize GPM (gallons per minute). DME recommends in-line coolant flow meter usage. In-line coolant flow meters are available from DME Moulding Supplies. www.dme.net/mouldingsupplies coolantflow.pdf
n Coolant feed channels should be the same size or larger than the calculated coolant channel
n keep coolant channels clean with filtering and scheduled channel maintenance to de-scale coolant channels
n Use parallel cooling versus series cooling, as appropriate
n Minimize restrictions within cooling circuit

n Remove the exit hose from a mould-cooling channel and fill a 1- or 5-gallon container while measuring the amount of time it takes to fill the container.
n Calculate the amount of coolant that flowed through the exit hose into the container. > For example, filling a 5-gallon container in 8 minutes is a flow rate of .625 gallons per minute (5 over 8 or 5/8 = .625) > .625 gallons per minute is a very good flow rate for a 1/4 NPT cooling channel. However, this would NoT be turbulent flow for a 3/8 NPT flow channel.
n Additionally, many other factors influence the cooling process, including coolant channel placement, distance the cooling channels are from the cavity or core moulding surface, distance between each cooling channel, and the number of cooling channels.
n Furthermore, if water deposits such as lime and other hard water mineral deposits are allowed to accumulate, the walls of the cooling channels will become insulated. Turbulent flow is less beneficial under these conditions. > Practice filtering the coolant along with regularly scheduled coolant channel maintenance to de-scale coolant channels.
n Mould materials also play a significant role in cooling time. For example, replacing 420 Stainless Steel cores with a Copper Alloy such as Mouldstar (as supplied by DME) can significantly reduce cycle time.
n Lastly, remember that regular cooling channel maintenance and turbulent water flow rates for the size of the cooling channels will have an enormous effect on the moulds cooling capacity.

Straight Brass Plug Baffles
APPROX. CLEARANCE C
DME Brass Plug Baffles, available in both straight and spiral styles, are constructed entirely of high-quality brass with blades brazed to the plugs for long, dependable service. They provide a high-pressure seal through a deliberate difference of taper between the plug and the tapped hole.
The function of the baffle is to split the drilled waterline into two equal channels. As the heating or cooling medium enters, the baffle diverts the flow to travel up to and over the end of the baffle and down the other side.
Clearance must be provided between the end of the baffle and the end of the drilled channel to provide adequate flow. See Dimension C for approximate clearances.

Flowmeters
Doctor Eddy diagnoses flow condition.
Using Fluid Characteristic Indication (FCI) technology, Dr Eddy displays the condition of the water as it relates to flow efficiency: laminar flow, transient flow or turbulent flow. Dr. Eddy has four scales built into the meter: three scales for FCI and one scale for flow rate. FCI Scales are selectable and correspond to cooling line inside diameter: 1/4, 3/8 or 1/2 . Flow rate scale can be referenced quickly for additional functionality. The flow scale displays flow rate in gallons or litres per minute depending on the model. A dual scale temperature gauge is standard on all models for process comparison to the FCI scales. Dr. Eddy applies the science of heat transfer, diagnosing the condition of cooling water lines at a glance. Cooling water capacity can be conserved within the factory by using the minimum amount of water that will produce turbulence on all machines. It may be possible to delay costly water system upgrades by maximising the flow effectivity.
Turbulent Flow Basics
Turbulent water flow is much more efficient at removing heat in a cooling system than water flowing under laminar conditions.
Once turbulent flow is acheived, increasing the flow rate does not significantly improve the cooling rate of the system. Im moulding applications, many mould operators try to maximise the flow of water through their cooling systems to ensure turbulent flow. Doing so increases energy for pumping more water than necessary through the system. This practise may also limit the amount of cooling water available for cooling additional moulds on the same cooling system circuit. By ensuring turbulent flow using FCI technology, less water can be used in the moulding process, saving precious resources.

Electronic FlowmeterTracerWith the new electronic flowmeter, it is easier than ever to know exactly how much water is flowing through your water lines. In addition to flow rate, the Tracer provides a precise temperature reading of the water. And, it will calculate BTus (British Thermal units). With the new information the Tracer will provide, you can manage your processes more completely and accurately.
Know your FlowThere is no need to guess if water is flowing through each line or zone of a mould. Now you can know exactly how much is flowing. Your flow rate is displayed in 100ths of a gallon per minute. If you prefer, flow is displayed in litres per minute.
Know your Water TemperatureIn addition to providing current flow rate data, the Tracer also provides the current water temperature at the flowmeter. Used on the supply side, this can verify precise water temperature as it enters the mould. Put the Tracer in the out or return side and measure water temperature exiting the mould. Temperature can be displayed in either Fahrenheit or Celsius units, user selectable.
Know your BTUs (British Thermal Units)The setup mode of the Tracer allows you to enter the incoming or supply water temperature. Then with the Tracer attached to the return water line, it will calculate BTu per minute.
VersatileThe Tracer can be mounted in any position. It can accept flow in either direction and it has a sight glass on the back for visual verification of flow. Select the optional quick connect fittings and use the Tracer as a test kit to diagnose your water line problems.
Two Different TracersThe digital display TRACER is battery powered and has an easy to read LCD which displays flowrate, temperature, or BTus at the touch of a button. A programmable auto shutoff feature extends battery life.

Electronic FlowmeterTracer Switching Flowmeter
Features and Benefits Programmable SPDT (Single Pole Double Throw) switch tied to high or low flow, or high or low temperature conditions to help protect equipment and processes.
Remotely powered for low maintenance operation. Bi-directional flow reading makes installation simple and convenient. Metric or English units for flow and temperature are user-selectable. Corrosion-resistant wetter parts assure long-lasting durability. 3/8 through 2 BSP inlet/outlet installs easily into existing plumbing.
Tracer Electronic Switching Flowmeter measures liquid flow rate and temperature while providing one programmable switching set point for high or low flow or temperature. 8 to 28VDC power source operates the flowmeter to provide continuous monitoring of the process. Sealed push-buttons configure the flowmeter and switching operations through user friendly menus. BTus per minute calculation is available as standard.
The Tracer Electronic Switching Flowmeter is designed to be permanently mounted to closely monitor water flow and temperature conditions. The SPDT switch in the Tracer flowmeter can be wired directly to an alarm circuit in a process controller or other peripheral equipment. The BSP threaded openings provide versatile, leak-free connections to match existing plumbing without adaptors.
