1. MORNING SESSION – CURRENT STATUS AND ACTIVITIES - 09:00 – 12:00

1.1. Opening, welcome, members attending, apologies, introductions of visitors.

1.2. Overview of IUPAC, Division Status, Strategic Plan Goals (appendix 1) LM provided a review of the New IUPAC Strategic Plan MISSION The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry is the global organization that provides objective scientific expertise and develops the essential tools for the application and communication of chemical knowledge for the benefit of humankind and the world. IUPAC accomplishes its mission by fostering sustainable development, providing a common language for chemistry, and advocating the free exchange of scientific information. CORE VALUES We serve humankind by advancing chemistry worldwide. • Scientific excellence and objectivity are the cornerstones of all our work. • We value collaboration and communication among all our stakeholders. • We strive for diversity and inclusiveness in all forms. • We respect each other and the Union. • We uphold the highest standards of transparent, responsible and ethical behavior. 1.4 Reports from representative on standing committees

Divisional representative on standing committees who were present reported on the

standing committees’ activities and the possible collaboration with the Division

CHEMRAWN – Nadia Kandile (TM) NK reported on the activities of CHEMRAWN and the shortage of fund. She announced the CHEMRAWN conference on solid waste (Appendix2a)

Committee on Chemistry and Industry (COCI) – Hemda Garelick (DCE Rep) HG reported on the possibilities for increased collaboration with COCI and of the meeting that has taken place in London early this year. COCI has sent a letter to all Division presidents explaining the possible collaboration with SAICM and requesting information on possible Divisional projects which may be included (LM and HG have sent a response from Division VI (Appendix 2b) to Bernard West and Anna Makarova Anna Makarova and Rai Kookana had discussions on identifying the key topics where IUPAC can make a contribution. Ecological risks of pharmaceutical compounds was identified as one topic where some key messages from IUPAC can be communicated via Anna M during the Sept SAICM meeting (verbal discussion session). It was however noted that extremely short time frame may preclude developing a consensus between various IUPAC divisions. Anna M to seek opinion of IUPAC leadership.

Committee on Chemical Education (CCE) – Manos Dassiankis (DCE Rep); was not present. No report was provided.

Interdivisional Committee on Terminology, Nomenclature and Symbols- (ICTNS) – Petr Fedotov (DCE Rep). PF provided a report on the ICTNS activities (Appendix 2c) PF initiated a discussion on the role of ICTNS and the need to communicate with the committee before any submission of IUPAC endorsed documents. LM suggested that an email is sent to all project group chairs NK suggested further circulation

Pure and Applied Chemistry Editorial Advisory Board (PAC-EAB) – Laura McConnell (DCE Rep) PAC Editorial Board is in regroup mode at present. They have conducted a preliminary analysis of factors influencing their impact factor. They also have decided to sign the San Francisco Declaration emphasizing that impact factor does not correlate to the merits of individual scientist’s work. LM invited someone to succeed her in the role of rep

Interdivisional committee on Materials Chemistry – representative (Meeting planned for Monday 9:00 – 12:30) – meeting planned for Monday 9:00 – 12:30. (Appendix 2d)

RK has joint the committee as a representative of the Division. RK attended the meeting of this committee in Busan. Major outcomes/actions required relevant to Division: Content for Environment Tab of new website for committee Workshop to be organized in Sao Paulo in 2017 – RK to be involved.

Division VII Chemistry and Human Health Division – Bradley Miller has volunteered to represent the division. Action: HG to confirm to the Div VII when the points from the joint meeting are summarised

Division III Organic and Biomolecular Chemistry Division, Subcommittee on Green Chemistry – Yehuda Sheva (SCM) YS has reported about the Green Chemistry conference in Durban in which he represented

the division. He is also contributing to the book supported by both divisions Beyond Chlorine

(Appendix 3) and asked for further contributions from the division.

A discussion followed on the nature of Green Chemistry. RK raise the fact that at the moment

it resides in Div III.

RA explained the way ACS and the Canadian institute of Green Chemistry and the institute if

sustainability and clean technology address the above.

It was agreed that Green Chemistry was an issue and a driver in both divisions and that the

split was a governance issue.

LM : Credit to Div III for the substantial contribution and suggested that we need to review

our relationship with the green chemistry subcommittee

RA suggested that may be it could become a cross- divisional forum.

YS has also expressed his appreciation to the Division and IUPAC for the funding and the

support I received for the project on Water Quality in the Middle East which is ending and by

all means it was successful.

The project allowed the execution of three highly attended regional conferences in Amman, Paris

and Malta jointly with MCF, presentation of the project in several int. conferences on

transboundary water in Fortaleza Brazil, France and Spain. The final manuscript was published as

a chapter in a 3 volumes book that was published last year on Comprehensive Water Quality by

ELSVIER and a new chapter was accepted for publication in a new book to be published by ACS on

Water Challenges. Also several papers were published in peer reviewed journals.1.5

Subcommittee reports have been submitted

1.5.1 Sub-committee on chemical and biophysical environmental processes. (Appendix 4)

PF and HR reported verbally on the set up and activities of the sub-committee. They reported

on the evolving collaboration with EUCheMS Chemistry and the Environment Division.

HR reported on the conference call that has taken place in January 2015 and on the finalised

and current projects:

I. 2009-048-1-600 Koerdel. The project is finished and a paper was published in

‘Environmental Science and Pollution Research’.

II. 2011-060-1-Ruedel - HR reported on the bioavailability project which has been successful and a paper was published in Environmental Science and Pollution Research the next stage is organising a workshop. A request was made and agreed to extend the project to Dec 2016.

III. HR and PF reported on the plans for the ICCE 2015 conference in Leipzig. The

division is sponsoring 2 events

a. Project No. 2014-031-1- Purchase. The Environmental and health

challenges of E-Waste and its management: an emerging 21st

century global concern.

HG reported that The E-waste project will have its first meeting in a

satellite meeting organised for the project the ICCE conference in

Leipzig: http://www.icce2015.org/se_2.html.

b. PF and HR reported on the special session in ICCE 2015

The cooperation with the Division of Chemistry and the Environment

(DCE) of the European Association of Chemical and Molecular Sciences

(EuCheMS) has been established. A special session “Metals, Metalloids

and Elemental Speciation” has been included in the program of

the15th EuCheMS International Conference on Chemistry and the

Environment (20-24 September 2015, Leipzig, Germany). This motion

was supported by the Chairman of ICCE 2015 Organizing Committee Prof.

Thorsten Reemtsma. All the contributions submitted to the special

session were evaluated by two conveners, Petr Fedotov and Heinz

Ruedel. The final list of presentations is given in Appendix 10.

1.5.2 The Crop protection subcommittee report sis attached

1.5.3 Food subcommittee

LM reported on the Food Subcommittee has shown no activity.

The Division has agreed that due to the lack of members with expertise in the Division the

subcommittee is now dissolved.

I. 2010-028-3-600 Sakellariadou – Technical report in final review by ICTNS prior to publication by PAC.

Almost complete.

II. 2014-023-2-600 Letcher –

LM reported on the Climate change book and the insistence that the chapters are

reviewed by member of the Division and ICTNS. (Appendix6)

It was agreed that in future all publications supported by the Division should be reviewed

by the Division.

All chapters submitted. Book is now available for pre-order from Elsevier

III. 2013-024-2-600 Molyneux – Slow progress but holding a task group meeting at the Boston ACS

meeting and a final meeting at Pacifichem in Dec 2015. Will provide an updated deadline after the

Boston meeting.

1.8 Activities at the 48th General Assembly in Busan

1.8.1 World Chemistry Leadership Meeting –McConnell and Garelick

LM reported on the plans for WCLM

1.8.2 Environmental Chemistry Poster Session and Poster Prize –Bradley Miller (Appendix 7)

BM explain that Poster session planned for Tuesday afternoon and that the Prizes to be awarded at

Closing Ceremonies. He asked for volunteers for judges.

A discussion ensued about the title of the award and whether it should include the words poster

award on the certificate. It was suggested that a better title would be “Chemistry and the

Environment Award”. This would clearly associate the award with the Division name. This was

supported by the YO present.

RK suggested that we need a small group to develop it as a project.

It was agreed that this was an important presence for the division

Catalysis” under topic of Green Chemistry for World Needs - Wed AM and Thursday AM and PM –

LM reported. All funded projects were represented in the symposium by at least one of the

three Principal Investigators.

1.8.4 Other Symposia of Note

1.9.1 there was a proposal to develop an Environmental poster award by JU and the sub-committee committee. This has now been integrated to the poster award which on the certificate will be identified as an Environmental Awards.

2. - AFTERNOON SESSION – PROJECT PROPOSAL REVIEW; PLANNING, BRAINSTORMING FUTURE PLANS 13:00 – 17:30

2.1 New IUPAC Projects 2.1.1 Discussion of any Proposals in Review

2015-018-1_SER FSC-SER-1512xx-Kenya > The Third TUK Annual Conference 2015: Water Quality Supply and Sanitation Technologies for Sustainable Socio-economic Development of the Country’. Budget request from non-divisional funds $4000.

JU expressed the wish, through LM, to go with a separate project proposal due to delays in information provision by the organisers.

2015-010-1 (Keen) Standardization of electrical energy per order (EEO) reporting for UV/H2O2 reactors, Submitted to Divisions 1 and 6 Olya Keen, Budget Requested in USD 9153. The TGL has responded to comments and the project was submitted to external review.

2.1.2 Draft Proposals Submitted to Division

2.1.2.1 Sound Pesticide Management in Tropical Ecosystems: Current State of the Knowledge and Critical Gaps – Silburn and Kookana

RK presented ideas for a. Workshop b. Issue of a journal c. Synthesis documents of current knowledge and gaps d. Looking for other participant, only then it will be viable.

2.2 Upcoming Conference Opportunities for Outreach 2.2 and Interaction

2.2.1 XXI Chemrawn Conference – Solid Urban Waste Management – April 2016 NK reported 2.2.2 HPLC 2017 – Prof. Doo Soo Chung is organizing an HPLC conference on JeJu Island (Korea) in November 2017. Doo Soo Chung DSC presented the details of the conference (Appendix 9) and has asked for Divisional support DSC presented the historical perspective of the HPLC society which was founded on 1973. The expected attendance in the 2017 conference (which is jointly organized with the Korean Environmental analysis Society) is 600 participants with about 150 oral presentations He suggested that the above conference theme will be related to water and environmental analysis. 2.2.3 Launch of Korea Chapter of ACS in Busan – Doo Soo Chung DSC announced the launch and invited all present to the launch dinner. 2.2.4 7th Conference of The World Mycotoxin Forum® and the XIIIth IUPAC International Symposium on Mycotoxins and Phycotoxins http://www.wmfmeetsiupac.org/welcome.html LM would like to collaborate and will attend the meeting next June as an IUPAC representative and aim to interact with leading food chemistry participants. This may possibly lead to a

mycotoxins sub-committee, inviting people to participate such as Ken Racke. BM raised the possibility of interaction on this withe Div VII Chemistry and Human Health. 2.2.5 49th General Assembly and 46th World Chemistry Congress in Sao Paulo Brazil, 2017 HR suggested to explore possibilities for a division-related symposium in the 49th General Assembly and 46th World Chemistry Congress in Sao Paulo Brazil, 2017." 2.2.6 Brainstorming on ideas for upcoming 50th General Assembly and IUPAC Centennial in Paris, 2019 PF suggested the history of the Division through the projects and the Environmental issues. 2.3 Proposed Location for 2016 Annual Meeting 2.3.1 Proposal from H. Garelick – Royal Society of Chemistry, London where a COCI meeting took place It was suggested that it would be attached to the SETAC conference in Nantes France 22-26 May 2.4 Improving Division Operating Efficiency, Effectiveness and Participation 2.4.1 Open Discussion There need to be a greater efficiency in reviewing proposals. RK suggested a share drive and more in depths reviews from a smaller number of people. HR suggested having a one or two in-depth reviewers rather that asking all to review all proposals. Group identified the need to develop a database of expertise for all division members so that proposals can be distributed to those best suited to review them. Sub-committee members could also be used as reviewers.

4. AFTERNOON SESSION –CROSS-DIVISIONAL MEETINGS AND FINAL SESSION 4.1 Cross Divisional Meetings

4.1.1 Cross-divisional meeting with Division VII

Project ideas discussed:

Topic of Bioavailability – Would like us to propose an idea related – examining chemical and

biological methods. Bradley Miller offered to develop a project on - Dioxins and PAHs bioavailability

in soils and sediments – e.g. related to desorption from a mineral surface.

From Rai Kookana - Can we adapt data on pharmaceuticals available to utilize it for environmental

fate predictions? Could this be used in helping predicting phase-partitioning in the environment?

Mukund Chorghade - Suggested writing a white paper on the issue of human exposure to

carcinogenic dyes released from industrial effluents. He indicated that we could have a significant

impact and should move forward quickly rather than in typical IUPAC project pace.

Vladamir – Proposed expanding their current project on Nanotechnology and human health - to

address nanomaterials released inadvertently into the environment, e.g., particulates from diesel

combustion.

4.1.2 Cross-divisional with Division III
