Sarawak is divided into divisions, 12 in all, each headed by an appointed resident. A division is divided into districts, each headed by a district officer, which are in turn divided into sub-districts, each headed by a Sarawak Administrative Officer (SAO).

There is also one development officer for each division and district to implement development projects. The state government appoints a headman (known as ketua kampung or penghulu) for each village.

There are a total of 26 sub-districts in Sarawak all under the jurisdiction of the Sarawak Ministry of Local Government and Community Development.

Limbang Division is one of the twelve administrative divisions of Sarawak, Malaysia. It has a total area of 7,788.50 square kilometres, and is the fourth largest division after Kapit Division, Miri Division and Bintulu Division.

Limbang Division consists of two districts which are Limbang and Lawas, together with a single sub-district under Limbang (Ng. Medamit) and two sub-districts under Lawas (Sundar and Trusan). Long Semadoh and Ba’kelalan are rural settlements in the southern part of Lawas District.

Two major towns in Limbang are Limbang and Lawas. There are also few smaller towns such as Sundar, Trusan, Merapok and Tedungan.

Connectivity

Limbang Division is a melting pot of many cultures, including Malay, Kedayan, Chinese, Iban and various Orang Ulu ethnic groups such as Lun Bawang, Bisaya, Murut, Kelabit and Penan.

Limbang is connected by flights from Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and Kuala Lumpur via Miri (RM130 per person) and Labuan (RM100 per person). Lawas is connected by flights from Miri (RM130 per person) and Kota Kinabalu (RM200 per person).

Visitors can also use licensed vans from Miri to Limbang (RM50 per person) or bus transport (RM45 per person). An express boat service is available from Labuan to Limbang (RM16 per person) and Labuan to Lawas (RM17 per person). Van transport is available from Miri to Lawas (RM75 per person) and Limbang to Lawas (RM30 per person).

Passports are required if travelling overland. There are two immigration checkpoints into and out of Brunei at Kuala Lurah and Sungei Tujoh checkpoints.

LIMBANG TOWN

LAWAS TOWN

The town of Limbang is situated on the narrow strip of land that divides Brunei in two and located along the eastern bank of Limbang River. The tallest building is the Limbang Plaza which is connected to the Purnama Hotel that offers a panoramic view of the Limbang River.

The Tamu or market situated at the waterfront gets especially busy during weekends when traders and farmers bring their wares from the fertile hinterland. It also attracts many shoppers from Brunei.

Across the bank from Limbang town is the water village of Kampung Seberang Kedai. Within walking distance is the Bukit Mas Lake Gardens, which includes the 210m high limestone outcrop. It is well-worth the climb for its views of the surrounding landscape and spectacular sunsets.

An old wooden fort built in 1897 has been converted into the Limbang Museum which has a collection of rare archaeological finds and artefacts and showcases the history and culture of the people. Opens daily from 8am to 5pm and entrance is free.

The Limbang Raid Memorial commemorates members of the Sarawak Constabulary and Britain’s Royal Marines who were killed during the Limbang Raid on 12 December 1962. The raid freed the town from the rebels of the pro-Indonesian North Kalimantan National Army.

The Gunung Buda National Park encompasses the Mulu Formation and the Gunung Buda (963m) limestone massif. The rainforest is rich in wildlife and home to 300 species of birds, 60 species of reptiles and 2,500 species of trees endemic to Borneo.

The Headhunter Trail follows the ancient route taken by Kayan headhunting war parties against the people of the Limbang area. The journey begins from Limbang town by road (1½ hours) to the Rantau Kurah or Kuala Medalam Iban longhouses for an optional overnight stay. From the longhouses the journey continues by longboat against the rapids to Kuala Terikan (2 – 3 hours depending on water level). Visitors will have to stop halfway through the journey to register at the Mentawai Ranger Station. From Kuala Terikan the 12km (approximately 4 hours) trek is through the heavily canopied forest that ends at the Mulu National Park. The Headhunter Trail can be done in reverse from the Mulu National Park.

The Merarap Hot Spring situated 70km from Lawas town is where hot water pipes in from a nearby mountain flow into dip pools. The fast flowing Trusan River that runs alongside provides fishing and white-water kayaking activities.

Irau Aco Lun Bawang (June) – brings together the Lun Bawang community and is held in conjunction with the Gawai (harvest) festival. Activities include traditional games such as blowpipe competitions, buffalo racing, cultural performances and a traditional beauty pageant for both young women and men.

Babulang and Buffalo Race Festival (June) – organised by the Bisaya community the event features water buffalo races and a parade of decorated floats pulled by buffaloes. The event also showcases the Bisaya cultural heritage.

Bedudun Festival – is an annual event that centres on buffalo races. Other activities include cooking demonstrations, body-building competitions and other sports competitions. The festival venue is rotated among the different riverine settlements.

Both Limbang and Lawas are known for their fitness and body-building culture where bodybuilding and strongman competitions are regularly held in conjunction with major events.

There are plenty of dining outlets in both Limbang and Lawas towns that include Chinese coffee shops known as kopi tiam with their dependable staple of morning coffee, roti bakar (toast), half-boiled eggs and noodle dishes.

There are also plenty of hawker stalls serving local variants of noodles and rice. Visitors can easily dine at Chinese seafood restaurants, Muslim food stalls and even a popular curry house. If hard pressed for Western fare, fish and chips and steak are served at the Maggie Cafe at the waterfront area in Limbang.

Local cuisine can be sampled during festivals. A Melanau staple is ambuyat which is made from sago flour into a thick gruel. A Kedayan speciality is the kelupis, which is rice wrapped in nyirik leaves and steamed over firewood.

A Bisaya speciality is the pulut wajik, made from millet and flavoured with palm sugar. The Lun Bawang community are proud of their padi-planting heritage and producing the highland Adan rice.

Another local delicacy is telu, which is pickled meat or fish. Iban cuisine can be sampled during the Gawai celebrations on 1st June where traditionally, tuak or rice wine, is offered to guests. A popular dish is pansuh which is meat or fish seasoned with lemongrass and cooked in bamboo over an open fire.

Other Iban delicacies are kasam which is fermented meat or fish. Fresh-water fish is cooked in soups with local eggplant or lemongrass. Forest ferns such as midin and the fiddlehead pucuk paku have a special place in the diet of the people.

Bukit Mas Day (October) – held at the Bukit Mas Lake Park the event includes activities such as the Mr Wonderful competition, boat paddling, fishing competitions and a night concert.

Bebuak Meritam Festival (November) – an entire festival has been created around the mud pools and mudflow at Meritam (37km from Limbang town). Activities include mud futsal, dodge ball, and a body-building competition.

Kedayan Festival – is celebrated by the Kedayan community who hold the annual Makan Tahun a thanksgiving feast for a successful harvest. The festival venue is rotated among the different Kedayan villages yearly.

The Payeh Maga Highlands at Ulu Trusan is reachable by a 3 hour 4WD drive from Lawas Town and a further 3 to 4 hour jungle trek. The area is known for its rare and endemic avifauna species. Serious nature and birding enthusiasts can stay overnight at the homestay in the Lun Bawang village of Long Tuyo

Ba’ Kelalan and Long Semadoh are Lun Bawang settlements. The most convenient way to travel to Ba’ Kelalan is by the rural air service from Miri via Lawas. Visitors can experience the simple and rustic lifestyle of the Lun Bawang community at Homestay Ba’ Kelalan. The journey to Long Semadoh is taken via road (4 – 5 hours) and visitors can experience Lun Bawang hospitality at its best at Homestay Long Semadoh,

The town of Lawas is situated on the Lawas River between Brunei and the Malaysian State of Sabah. The town gets busy during weekends with visitors stopping over on their way to Sabah or to the Lun Bawang villages of Ba’ Kelalan or Long Semadoh. The weekend market or Tamu is popular for its jungle produce and handicrafts.

The Penawan Waterfall is located 10 minutes away from Lawas town and visitors can stay at the Penawan Waterfalls Eco Park lodge overlooking the river.

The Kuala Medalam Homestay (2 – 3 hours by 4WD from Limbang town) is the jumping off point to the National Park. Inhabited by the Tabun ethnic group, the homestay provides activities such as trekking, a night walk or a river cruise.

The mud pools of Kampung Meritam (37km away from Limbang town) features an unusual phenomenon of volcanic mudflows that form wide craters.

There is plenty to do and see outside Limbang but the services of tour operators will be required.

Limpaki Wetlands (15km from Limbang town) offer plenty of opportunities to observe nature. While wildlife is often heard and not seen, there may be sightings of the proboscis monkey, crocodiles and fireflies.

Limbang River, has a modest collection of archaeological finds and ethnic artifacts.

BABULANG & BUFFALORACE FESTIVAL

Highlight • Babulang is the largest or grandest of the many rituals,

ceremonies and festivals of the traditional Bisaya (Borneo) community of Limbang and organized by the Bisaya Association.

• The highlight of the festival is the buffalo race involving teams from Limbang, Sabah and Brunei trying to outrace each other, riding on bare buffalo back.

• The festival showcases various music, songs, and dances; displaying colorful traditional costumes; decorations and handicrafts exhibition, cultural performances and cooking contest

• It is only during ‘Babulang’ that these Bisaya’s dances, songs, handicrafts and hospitality to their guests are on display.

• Another highlight of the festival is ‘Ratu Babulang’ and ‘Ratu Kebaya’ that draws many Bisaya lasses to vie for this annual beauty crown.

KEDAYAN FESTIVAL &MAKAN TAHUN

Highlight • ‘Makan Tahun’ is an important thanksgiving event held to

show gratitude over a successful harvest season.• It has also become symbolic for maintaining unity within the

Kedayan people where their kin, whether near or far, would gather together for the once-a-year gathering.

• As the name implies, the ‘Malam Kebudayaan’ involves mainly in exposing the traditional culture of ‘Makan Tahun’ for the younger generation and “Kepala Kapo” for the beauty crown.

• Apart from showcasing their cultural heritage, the cultural night also became a means to strengthen the bonds amongst the Kedayan community.

• The goal was achieved when everyone began introducing and sharing traditional foods such as the ‘wajid’, ‘penyaram’ and ‘suabai’, as well as traditional games and their colorful costumes.

BUKIT MAS DAY

Highlight • The program was held to further strengthen the relations and

unity of the residents in the area along the Limbang river.The first edition saw Kampung Telahak selected as venue program, followed by Kampung Meritam, Gadong and Kampung Telahak for fourth edition.

• At the same time it was able to introduce the Limbang riverfront village as a new buffalo racing circuit and to restore the popularity of buffalo racing ever popularIncludes exposures and sales, seven-legged football tournaments, pull-out, sepak takraw, culinary, gourd-making, partying, roofing, karaoke, jute, quilting and mowing (cutting bamboo).


BEBUAK MERITAM FESTIVAL

Highlight • An annually event organized by Limbang District Council.

The purpose is to promote the uniqueness of Bukit Mas Lake Park to the outside visitors

• Among the interesting activities are Mr. Wonderful competition participated by bodybuilders from the Borneo Archipelago, three-cornered pull-out rug, car contest, eating “ambuyat” Contest, petanques, Run Bukit Mas, blood donation, paddling competitions, karaoke, fishing competition sand

• Night will be served with cultural parties as well as performances from invited artists from various states as well as local invitation artists


Highlight • Organizes by Limbang District Council. Located 37km from

Limbang town.• The mudflow is very unique and magical as there are

blackish craters and warm temperatures. • The size of this muddy crater can reach 2 meters wide and

can accommodate 4 to 5 people at a time. This moss is also a sea-like nature and any object that falls into the crater will not sink.

• The various ceremonies that took place during the festival were buffalo taxis, tugging ropes, flying foxes, runs, sales stalls, tele matches, mud shower activities and Mr. Bebuak Lumpur.

Limbang Division is one of the twelve administrative divisions of Sarawak, Malaysia. It has a total area of 7,788.50 square kilometres, and is the fourth largest division after Kapit Division, Miri Division and Bintulu Division.

Limbang Division consists of two districts which are Limbang and Lawas, together with a single sub-district under Limbang (Ng. Medamit) and two sub-districts under Lawas (Sundar and Trusan). Long Semadoh and Ba’kelalan are rural settlements in the southern part of Lawas District.

Two major towns in Limbang are Limbang and Lawas. There are also few smaller towns such as Sundar, Trusan, Merapok and Tedungan.

Limbang Division is a melting pot of many cultures, including Malay, Kedayan, Chinese, Iban and various Orang Ulu ethnic groups such as Lun Bawang, Bisaya, Murut, Kelabit and Penan.

Limbang is connected by flights from Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and Kuala Lumpur via Miri (RM130 per person) and Labuan (RM100 per person). Lawas is connected by flights from Miri (RM130 per person) and Kota Kinabalu (RM200 per person).

Visitors can also use licensed vans from Miri to Limbang (RM50 per person) or bus transport (RM45 per person). An express boat service is available from Labuan to Limbang (RM16 per person) and Labuan to Lawas (RM17 per person). Van transport is available from Miri to Lawas (RM75 per person) and Limbang to Lawas (RM30 per person).

Passports are required if travelling overland. There are two immigration checkpoints into and out of Brunei at Kuala Lurah and Sungei Tujoh checkpoints.
