Division of Health Science

The Mission of the Health Science Division focuses on providing high quality education

to prepare students for careers and further education in health science professions. The

Health Science Division is known for academic excellence and has gained recognition for

consistently high student pass rates and outstanding student scores on state and national

licensing and credentialing examinations. Student success rates in Health Science

programs also are high, significantly exceeding college averages. In addition to

succeeding academically, graduates are highly successful in getting jobs in their fields of

study.

I attribute these accomplishments to the competency and hard work of our students, the

support services provided to our students, the quality of our faculty members and the

willingness of our faculty and staff to devote the effort needed to help our students

succeed. I am extremely proud of the Health Science faculty and staff members whose

contributions and extra efforts have resulted in another highly successful year.

This past year was characterized by many accomplishments. One particularly noteworthy

accomplishment was approval to participate in the California Bachelor’s Degree Pilot

Program: our Mortuary Science program will be offering a baccalaureate degree program

in Mortuary Science beginning fall, 2017.

This 2014-2015 Division of Health Science Annual Report provides an overview of some

of the major accomplishments in our Division. I congratulate our faculty and staff on a

very successful 2014-2015 and look forward to the 2015-2016 year.

NEWS & ACCOMPLISHMENTS 2014-2015

Dental Assisting

Fifty eight percent of May 2015 Dental Assistant graduates seeking employment

(not including those pursuing further education) were employed in the profession

at the time of graduation.

The Dental Assisting Dept. held its annual Advisory Committee meeting on

March 23, 2015. The Advisory Committee, which includes Dentists and

Registered Dental Assistants, met to discuss curriculum revision, new regulations,

and equipment needs for the 2015-2016 academic year.

Dental Assisting students participated in a field trip to the California Dental

Conference “Scientific Session” in Anaheim, April, 2015.

Two awards were given to Dental Assisting Students for Academic Success from

the Orange County Dental Society.

Dental Assisting students provided dental care and education to approximately 45

women and children from Collette’s Homeless Shelter in Orange County.

Under the leadership of Elizabeth Pacheco the program once again attained 100%

of program capacity.

A new full time faculty member was hired and joined the Dental Assisting faculty

in August 2015.

Page 9: Division of HEALTH SCIENCEnews.cypresscollege.edu/documents/2017... · to prepare students for careers and further education in health science professions. The Health Science Division

9

Dental Hygiene

One hundred percent of the Dental Hygiene students from the class of 2014 were

employed in the Dental Hygiene profession.

As of May 2015, all of the students in the class of 2015 who took the National

Dental Hygiene Board Examination passed.

Dental Hygiene students submitted research projects to the Southern California

Dental Hygienists’ Association (CDHA) Annual Meeting and the California

Dental Association’s (CDA) Annual Meeting Research Competition. This

competition was open to all dental hygiene schools in Southern California. This

year eight schools competed, submitting a total of 27 table clinic projects. In all,

only 6 awards were given and Cypress College students received two of them. In

2015, “Household Bleach – An Unorthodox Rinse” received a First Place in the

original research division and “Buffering up the Base” received a Second Place in

the informational research category.

Dental Hygiene senior students presented three one-hour oral health lessons to

five different community groups. These target groups were selected by the

students and included such groups as unwed mothers, special needs individuals

(both adult and children) and nursing home residents. The students also presented

Oral Health Information to approximately 700 K- 6 grade students in the Cypress

School District.

Page 10: Division of HEALTH SCIENCEnews.cypresscollege.edu/documents/2017... · to prepare students for careers and further education in health science professions. The Health Science Division

10

In September, 2014 the Dental Hygiene Department hosted a cultural exchange

with 29 dental hygiene students and their faculty from Nagano, Japan. All of the

students enjoyed learning about the similarities and differences between dental

hygiene in the United States and Japan. Cell phones were again a hit for Japanese-

English translation beyond sign-language, smiles and giggles.

Students received scholarships totaling $5,600 from various organizations.

In October, 2014 the Dental Hygiene Department and the Orange County Dental

Hygiene Society provided a free dental clinic for approximately 45 women and

children from Collette’s Homeless Shelter in Orange County. The day brought

together community dentists and dental hygienists to work alongside Cypress

College dental hygiene and dental assisting students to provide much needed

dental care and education to the women and children. The gratitude of this group

was overwhelming with praise for our students and faculty as well as for the

treatment received and the kindness with which they felt they were treated.

former Cypress College students of 4.3 to 4.9 with an overall rating of

4.67. 100% of the responders stated that they would hire another graduate

from the Cypress College DMS program.

The DMS program received funds from One Time Budget requests and

purchased a scrotal and endo-vaginal phantom for the students to practice

scanning techniques prior to performing these exams on real patients. A liver

model displaying the vascular system was also purchased.

Emma Anton was nominated and received the Cypress College Outstanding

Adjunct Faculty award for 2014-15. She was honored at the President’s

Reception prior to graduation and led the procession for the College

graduation ceremony on May 23, 2015.

Nursing

Mobile flu shot clinic participants: students gave 188 vaccines on Oct. 13

The Nursing Department purchased 22 new hospital beds for Health Science

Division programs to use in practicing patient care skills. The new beds were the

first purchased new beds in 30 years and were a much needed upgrade to the

teaching equipment. The students will be using modern hospital beds at Cypress

College that are like those used in hospitals.

The faculty welcomed Susan Smith as the newest tenure track faculty member in

the department. The department will be making additional faculty position

requests to plan for faculty retirements. Shirley Ashburn retired in December

2014 and additional retirements are anticipated in 2016.

A CCCCO Nursing Enrollment Growth Grant supported two groups of ten

additional students to begin the nursing program in August 2014 and January

2015. The grant also supported an additional clinical group for the third semester

in January 2015. In addition this grant provided for professional experts to serve

as mentor/tutors and work additional hours in the open skills lab to provide

practice and RN support to the nursing students.

Fourth semester nursing students participated in campus activities to increase

awareness of sexual assault issues. These nursing students proposed a policy on

sexual assault that will appear in the 2015-16 edition of the Nursing Student

Handbook.

Page 18: Division of HEALTH SCIENCEnews.cypresscollege.edu/documents/2017... · to prepare students for careers and further education in health science professions. The Health Science Division

November and April and the pediatric students participated in the Kinder-

Caminata, teaching students from local kindergarten classes about hand washing

and heart sounds.

In the spring of 2015 Susan Smith and Linda Martin collaborated to write a

Strategic Plan Grant proposal to support nursing student clinical success. The

proposal was funded and will continue into the fall of 2015 to support and assist

students who receive a prescription for success from their clinical instructors.

Students will be referred to the Skills Lab to work with Susan Smith and

Marredda Williams who will serve as professional experts to provide clinical

practice and review. While the nursing department had mentor/tutors for

academic support for over 15 years, this is the first opportunity to offer students

additional support to improve clinical performance and keep students in school.

The Nursing Faculty expressed appreciation to the United Faculty, Academic

Senate, Cypress College Administration, and to the NOCCCD Board of Trustees,

for their support in obtaining 1:1 compensation for clinical practicums

Program/Services Description In 2014-2015, the Cypress College Health Center provided a variety of health and wellness

services which included treatment of acute illness, TB screening and immunizations, STI

screening, family planning services, wellness blood tests, nutrition counseling, smoking cessation

information and wellness screenings (e.g. PAP tests and blood pressure). Mental health services

also continued to be available to students, who could make appointments with an on-site clinical

mental health counselor for up to six visits. Overall, mental health counseling visits continued to

increase with many new students using counseling services at the Health Center during 2014-

2015.

The Health Center hours of operation continued to be Monday through Thursday from 8:00am-

6:00pm and Friday 8:00am-12:00noon. The Health Center staff consisted of a full-time Director/

Family Nurse Practitioner, full time Administrative Assistant, full time Registered Nurse and part

time physician. Additionally, during the Fall and Spring semesters temporary staff included a

Family Nurse Practitioner, Marriage/Family Therapist, and a registered nurse. Health Center

services continued to be covered solely by student health fees and there was no charge to students

to see the physician, nurse practitioner, counselor, or registered nurse. Nominal fees were

assessed for immunizations and laboratory tests.

Recent Trends and Current Status This past year the campus Health Center served approximately 5,000 students; a highly

significant number of students for a health center of its size. Institutional surveys continued to

reflect a high level of satisfaction with services. The Health Center organized and promoted Title

IX activities during April 2015 for Sexual Assault Awareness Month and the “Love is Louder”

campaign for suicide prevention in Sept. 2014. The Health Center continued to advertise in the

school paper and participate in campus events.
