Remove field heat in onion, garlic and potato before

shifting to storage. Maintain weed free conditions in all

vegetable crops.

Cattle

Cow Sporadic cases of FMD have started pouring in at our

university veterinary hospital from different parts of the

valley. FMD is a viral disease of cloven-hooved animals

like cattle, sheep, goats, and buffalo. It spreads very

quickly from animal to animal, and from herd to herd

resulting in outbreaks. There is no specific treatment to the

disease. Death rate in adult animals is normally low but it

is highly fatal new borne. Big losses occur from lack of

weight gain, reduced milk yield and mastitis, and general

un-thriftiness. Abortion and infertility may also be seen

after recovery from acute disease. Vaccination and

precautionary measures are the only ways to contain the

disease. Get your animals aged 4 months and above

vaccinated once in 6 months. Infected animals should be

immediately separated since all excretions and secretions

from infected animals contain the virus. Avoid moving

animals from one part of the farm to another if possible.

Keep different species of livestock separate where possible,

as sheep do not always show obvious signs of the disease

and you could inadvertently infect other animals. All feed

and fodder in contact with the infected animal should be

destroyed. All equipment used should be cleaned and

disinfected with 4% sodium carbonate solution. Healthy

animals should not be handled by persons in contact with

infected animals. Carcasses should be burnt or buried. The

infected premises should be disinfected with 4% sodium

carbonate solution or any other available disinfectant like

sodium hydroxide, or acetic acid. The infected animal

would exhibit various symptoms like, quivering of lips,

drooling of stringy saliva in long ropes, vesicles on the

nose and in the mouth, and between the claws, high fever

and lameness. Animal would consume only liquids or stop

eating and drinking completely. Treatment is only

symptomatic. Better to consult local veterinarian for

treating your animal. However, broad spectrum antibiotics

to check secondary bacterial infection, analgesics to control

fever and various tonics to keep animal active are

advisable. Mouth wash with potassium permanganate,

sodium carbonate, boric acid and glycerine; and foot bath

with phenyl should be performed. Commercially available

creams for treating oral lesions like BoroG, Lexanox plus

are showing promising results. In case of any difficulty or

query, kindly feel free to contact any clinical scientist

panelled on Telemedicine Portal available on Skuast K

website.

Sheep and goat

Avoid mixing of flocks whether migrating or migrated to

avoid spreading of infectious diseases. Follow definite

migratory route and provide rest to livestock at places

having enough of grazing biomass and clean drinking

water. Avoid grazing areas having abundant poisonous

grasses during migration. Avoid migration of sick and

weak animals to avoid undue losses. Provide proper shelter

to livestock particularly kids and lambs during inclement

weather Protect livestock from predators particularly

during night hours. Animals should be counted at the time

of evening collection to avoid losses. The animals kept in

villages should be allowed to graze/ browse during cooler

hours of the day (Morning and evening for 8 to 10 hours).

Proper shelter and enough of clean drinking water should

be provided during the hotter periods of the day to avoid

heat and nutritional stress. Animals should be

supplemented with extra ration where-ever the village

pastures are depleted for augmenting performance. Non-

migrated flock should be continuously monitored for

parasitic load and nutritional stress. Same need to be

addressed immediately by proper dosing and nutrient

supplementation. Undertake PPR vaccination of livestock

after 15-21 days of sheep/goat pox vaccination. Same

should be repeated after every 3 years. Maintain proper

sanitation in and around the paddocks by proper cleaning

and disinfecting the paddocks.

Poultry For broiler farms

For backyard poultry

farmers.

Take care of Ventilation in the farm. Ensure clean

drinking water. Wash the waterers daily. Rinse them in

potassium permanganate solution before filling them again.

In case of doubtful water quality, use of water sanitizers is

advocated. Look for clumps in feed. Clumping indicated

spoilage. Never use spoiled/suspected feed for feeding.

Store feed in damp proof, well ventilated rooms on wooden

planks and stack feed bags away from the wall. Keep space

between stacks also. Adhere strictly to the vaccination

schedule.

Save newly hatched chicks from predators. Confine them

to wire mesh or cane enclosures. Periodic cleaning and use

of bedding material in pens is recommended Ensure

vaccination against Ranikhet Disease using R2B vaccine.

Periodic de-worming of poultry birds and spraying of anti-

ectoparasitic solution in the pens is recommended to

prevent parasitic infestation.

Flowers Care and

maintenance/Harvesting

of seed/Bulbs

Inspect tulip and iris bulbs in storage and discard diseased

and rotten ones if any. Keep moist and weed free flower

beds by watering, weeding and hoeing regularly as and

when needed. Prepare beds for sowing the seeds of spring

flowering annuals. Keep on harvesting of Gladiolus cut

flowers

Page 5: DIVISION OF AGRONOMY

Apiculture Care and maintenance

Protect the bee colonies from wasps by installing wasp

traps or by manual flapping. Apply formic acid for mite

management @ 5ml/colony in vials. Provide artificial diet

(sugar solution) if required. Keep regular vigil to check

rubbing. Migrate bee colonies to suitable areas where flora

is available.

Sericulture

Care and maintenance Before starting Second rearing, farmers are advised to

ensure complete disinfection of rearing rooms and rearing

appliances by spraying with 2%formaline+0.5% slaked

lime, farmers can also spray with 5% solution of bleaching

powder for disinfection of rearing appliances and rearing

rooms after silkworm rearing is over. Farmers can also

disinfect rearing appliances by keeping in direct sunlight.

Ensure complete sun drying/stifling of Harvested cocoons

after sorting out of defective ones. The harvested cocoons

should be preserved in safe containers or by hanging them

under roofs of houses to avoid rodent and pest damage till

marketing will be done in your area.

Mushroom

Cultivation

Button mushroom Proper preventive measures should always be taken against

any pest/ diseases and competitor moulds and its further

dissemination in other trays or bags. used compost should

not be kept in the vicinity of the growing rooms. After

termination of the crop the trays should be thoroughly

disinfected by dipping in formalin (2%) solution. The

rooms should be disinfected with (2%) formalin spray after

termination of the crop.

Agro

forestry/forestr

y

Maintenance Weeding and hoeing operations to be done in agro forestry

systems/models. Forest nurseries need to be irrigated

during early morning and evening hours to avoid

desiccation/stress due to heat. Avoid irrigation in nurseries,

if rain is predicted in forecast on that day. Diseased

seedlings in nursery should be immediately isolated from

the healthy ones and treated separately with the

recommended fungicides. Massive outbreak of

disease/insect damage must be reported to the concerned

scientist/expert for remedial measures.

Fisheries

Developmental stages

Disinfect nets and farm equipments with soap water/

KMnO4 before use. In view of the flash floods ensure that

no muddy water enter your raceway/pond, and maintain

constant water level in trout raceways. Regularly monitor

water quality parameters in grow-out and rearing ponds. In

case of any disease outbreak, bring the fish and moribund

fish samples to AAHM Lab. Also Use Fish health android

App.

vegetable crops.

All feed

Page 12: DIVISION OF AGRONOMY

12

and fodder in contact with the infected animal should be

destroyed. All equipment used should be cleaned and

disinfected with 4% sodium carbonate solution. Healthy

animals should not be handled by persons in contact with

infected animals. Carcasses should be burnt or buried. The

infected premises should be disinfected with 4% sodium

carbonate solution or any other available disinfectant like

sodium hydroxide, or acetic acid. The infected animal

would exhibit various symptoms like, quivering of lips,

drooling of stringy saliva in long ropes, vesicles on the

nose and in the mouth, and between the claws, high fever

and lameness. Animal would consume only liquids or stop

eating and drinking completely. Treatment is only

symptomatic. Better to consult local veterinarian for

treating your animal. However, broad spectrum antibiotics

to check secondary bacterial infection, analgesics to control

fever and various tonics to keep animal active are

advisable. Mouth wash with potassium permanganate,

sodium carbonate, boric acid and glycerine; and foot bath

with phenyl should be performed. Commercially available

creams for treating oral lesions like BoroG, Lexanox plus

are showing promising results. In case of any difficulty or

query, kindly feel free to contact any clinical scientist

panelled on Telemedicine Portal available on Skuast K

website.

migratory route and provide rest to livestock at places

having enough of grazing biomass and clean drinking

water. Avoid grazing areas having abundant poisonous

grasses during migration. Avoid migration of sick and

weak animals to avoid undue losses. Provide proper shelter

to livestock particularly kids and lambs during inclement

weather Protect livestock from predators particularly

during night hours. Animals should be counted at the time

of evening collection to avoid losses. The animals kept in

villages should be allowed to graze/ browse during cooler

hours of the day (Morning and evening for 8 to 10 hours).

Proper shelter and enough of clean drinking water should

be provided during the hotter periods of the day to avoid

heat and nutritional stress. Animals should be

supplemented with extra ration where-ever the village

pastures are depleted for augmenting performance. Non-

migrated flock should be continuously monitored for

parasitic load and nutritional stress. Same need to be

addressed immediately by proper dosing and nutrient

supplementation. Undertake PPR vaccination of livestock

Ensure orchard sanitation through destruction of weeds,

pruned or diseased/infected twigs by burning. Adopt proper

central drainage system. Maintain a gap of 3-4 days

between insecticide and fungicide spray. Avoid mixing of

fungicides, insecticide and other chemicals. Same

fungicide should not be repeated continuously in two

sprays.

Vegetables Various growth stages Sowing of kale, knol khol, cabbage and cauliflower may

carried out in well prepared open nursery when weather

permits. Land may be prepared for sowing of carrot.

Threshing of seed crops (carrot, coriander, beet, fenugreek,

radish, etc) should be done during dry sunny hours.

Remove field heat in onion, garlic and potato before

shifting to storage. Maintain weed free conditions in all

vegetable crops.

Cattle

Cow Sporadic cases of FMD have started pouring in at our

university veterinary hospital from different parts of the

valley. FMD is a viral disease of cloven-hooved animals

like cattle, sheep, goats, and buffalo. It spreads very

quickly from animal to animal, and from herd to herd

resulting in outbreaks. There is no specific treatment to the

disease. Death rate in adult animals is normally low but it

is highly fatal new borne. Big losses occur from lack of

weight gain, reduced milk yield and mastitis, and general

un-thriftiness. Abortion and infertility may also be seen

after recovery from acute disease. Vaccination and

precautionary measures are the only ways to contain the

disease. Get your animals aged 4 months and above

vaccinated once in 6 months. Infected animals should be

immediately separated since all excretions and secretions

from infected animals contain the virus. Avoid moving

animals from one part of the farm to another if possible.

Keep different species of livestock separate where possible,

as sheep do not always show obvious signs of the disease

and you could inadvertently infect other animals. All feed

and fodder in contact with the infected animal should be

destroyed. All equipment used should be cleaned and

disinfected with 4% sodium carbonate solution. Healthy

animals should not be handled by persons in contact with

infected animals. Carcasses should be burnt or buried. The

infected premises should be disinfected with 4% sodium

carbonate solution or any other available disinfectant like

sodium hydroxide, or acetic acid. The infected animal

Page 25: DIVISION OF AGRONOMY

would exhibit various symptoms like, quivering of lips,

drooling of stringy saliva in long ropes, vesicles on the

nose and in the mouth, and between the claws, high fever

and lameness. Animal would consume only liquids or stop

eating and drinking completely. Treatment is only

symptomatic. Better to consult local veterinarian for

treating your animal. However, broad spectrum antibiotics

to check secondary bacterial infection, analgesics to control

fever and various tonics to keep animal active are

advisable. Mouth wash with potassium permanganate,

sodium carbonate, boric acid and glycerine; and foot bath

with phenyl should be performed. Commercially available

creams for treating oral lesions like BoroG, Lexanox plus

are showing promising results. In case of any difficulty or

query, kindly feel free to contact any clinical scientist

Sheep and goat

Avoid mixing of flocks whether migrating or migrated to

avoid spreading of infectious diseases. Follow definite

migratory route and provide rest to livestock at places

having enough of grazing biomass and clean drinking

water. Avoid grazing areas having abundant poisonous

grasses during migration. Avoid migration of sick and

weak animals to avoid undue losses. Provide proper shelter

to livestock particularly kids and lambs during inclement

weather Protect livestock from predators particularly

during night hours. Animals should be counted at the time

of evening collection to avoid losses. The animals kept in

villages should be allowed to graze/ browse during cooler

hours of the day (Morning and evening for 8 to 10 hours).

Proper shelter and enough of clean drinking water should

be provided during the hotter periods of the day to avoid

heat and nutritional stress. Animals should be

supplemented with extra ration where-ever the village

pastures are depleted for augmenting performance. Non-

migrated flock should be continuously monitored for

parasitic load and nutritional stress. Same need to be

addressed immediately by proper dosing and nutrient

supplementation. Undertake PPR vaccination of livestock

after 15-21 days of sheep/goat pox vaccination. Same

should be repeated after every 3 years. Maintain proper

sanitation in and around the paddocks by proper cleaning

Important Instructions:

The infected animal

would exhibit various symptoms like, quivering of lips,

drooling of stringy saliva in long ropes, vesicles on the

Page 38: DIVISION OF AGRONOMY

38

nose and in the mouth, and between the claws, high fever

and lameness. Animal would consume only liquids or stop

eating and drinking completely. Treatment is only

symptomatic. Better to consult local veterinarian for

treating your animal. However, broad spectrum antibiotics

to check secondary bacterial infection, analgesics to control

fever and various tonics to keep animal active are

advisable. Mouth wash with potassium permanganate,

sodium carbonate, boric acid and glycerine; and foot bath

with phenyl should be performed. Commercially available

creams for treating oral lesions like BoroG, Lexanox plus

are showing promising results. In case of any difficulty or

query, kindly feel free to contact any clinical scientist

panelled on Telemedicine Portal available on Skuast K

website.

Sheep and goat

Avoid mixing of flocks whether migrating or migrated to

avoid spreading of infectious diseases. Follow definite

migratory route and provide rest to livestock at places

having enough of grazing biomass and clean drinking

water. Avoid grazing areas having abundant poisonous

grasses during migration. Avoid migration of sick and

weak animals to avoid undue losses. Provide proper shelter

to livestock particularly kids and lambs during inclement

weather Protect livestock from predators particularly

during night hours. Animals should be counted at the time

of evening collection to avoid losses. The animals kept in

villages should be allowed to graze/ browse during cooler

hours of the day (Morning and evening for 8 to 10 hours).

Proper shelter and enough of clean drinking water should

be provided during the hotter periods of the day to avoid

heat and nutritional stress. Animals should be

supplemented with extra ration where-ever the village

pastures are depleted for augmenting performance. Non-

migrated flock should be continuously monitored for

parasitic load and nutritional stress. Same need to be

addressed immediately by proper dosing and nutrient

supplementation. Undertake PPR vaccination of livestock

after 15-21 days of sheep/goat pox vaccination. Same

should be repeated after every 3 years. Maintain proper

sanitation in and around the paddocks by proper cleaning

and disinfecting the paddocks.

Poultry For broiler farms

Take care of Ventilation in the farm. Ensure clean

drinking water. Wash the waterers daily. Rinse them in

potassium permanganate solution before filling them again.

In case of doubtful water quality, use of water sanitizers is

advocated. Look for clumps in feed. Clumping indicated

spoilage. Never use spoiled/suspected feed for feeding.

farmers.

Store feed in damp proof, well ventilated rooms on wooden

planks and stack feed bags away from the wall. Keep space

between stacks also. Adhere strictly to the vaccination

schedule.

Save newly hatched chicks from predators. Confine them

to wire mesh or cane enclosures. Periodic cleaning and use

of bedding material in pens is recommended Ensure

vaccination against Ranikhet Disease using R2B vaccine.

Periodic de-worming of poultry birds and spraying of anti-

ectoparasitic solution in the pens is recommended to

prevent parasitic infestation.

Flowers Care and

maintenance/Harvesting

of seed/Bulbs

Inspect tulip and iris bulbs in storage and discard diseased

and rotten ones if any. Keep moist and weed free flower

beds by watering, weeding and hoeing regularly as and

when needed. Prepare beds for sowing the seeds of spring

flowering annuals. Keep on harvesting of Gladiolus cut

flowers

Apiculture Care and maintenance

Protect the bee colonies from wasps by installing wasp

traps or by manual flapping. Apply formic acid for mite

management @ 5ml/colony in vials. Provide artificial diet

(sugar solution) if required. Keep regular vigil to check

rubbing. Migrate bee colonies to suitable areas where flora

is available.

Sericulture

Care and maintenance Before starting Second rearing, farmers are advised to

ensure complete disinfection of rearing rooms and rearing

appliances by spraying with 2%formaline+0.5% slaked

lime, farmers can also spray with 5% solution of bleaching

powder for disinfection of rearing appliances and rearing

rooms after silkworm rearing is over. Farmers can also

disinfect rearing appliances by keeping in direct sunlight.

Ensure complete sun drying/stifling of Harvested cocoons

after sorting out of defective ones. The harvested cocoons

should be preserved in safe containers or by hanging them

under roofs of houses to avoid rodent and pest damage till

marketing will be done in your area.

General guidelines to farmers for protection against COVID-19 disease.

Maintain physical distance (min 2m) while working at farm facility. Use protective gear while

marketing the produce. Disinfect the farm area regularly. Entry of visitors or outsiders is to be

restricted. Only those who are free from symptoms of cold/flu/fever etc should be allowed to

work in the farm. After work, wash your hands and legs thoroughly at least for 20-30 sec with

soap. Don’t spit in open especially in farm premises. Disinfect all farm equipments using

bleaching powder (15-20g in 10L of water) or Sodium hypochloride (0.25%).Take warm

water bath after attending farm work.

Note: There are no reports of covid-19 transmission from animals to humans.

(Nodal Officer)

“Before sowing, ensure treatment of seeds with recommended pesticides / biopesticides.”

“ Carry out open field operations when the soil becomes workable and under favorable

weather conditions”
