Division III Championship Highlights
2014
Sea Gulls down Bantams 9-6, claim second consecutive title: having experienced the haunting sense of disappointment that accompanied consecutive state-championship game losses in their final two seasons as Westminster high school, may 25 provided an awfully sweet sense of redemption for both Bethany Baer and Kate haker.
although history repeated itself their freshmen seasons at salisbury, that could not have been further from their thoughts as the final seconds counted down. soon after the final horn sounded, both were engulfed in a sea of maroon and gold in the corner of gettysburg’s Clark Field, delirious-ly celebrating a second consecutive nCaa Division iii Women’s lacrosse Championship title victory after the second-ranked sea gulls finalized a 9-6 triumph against no. 3 trinity (Ct).
after their previous disappointments, they are becoming accustomed to experiencing this championship feeling: the dancing around with team-mates, the posing for pictures that were instantly plastered across social media after becoming the first repeat national champions since tCnJ in 2005-06.
Before turning their focus toward a three-peat -- only tCnJ has hoisted the Walnut and Bronze in more than back-to-back years among Division iii women’s lacrosse programs, reigning from 1993-96 -- it only seems ap-propriate to recognize how Bear and haker helped the sea gulls celebrate again.
While salisbury (23-1) posted only the fifth first-half shutout in champion-ship-game history as Baer and senior goalie ashton Wheatley sparked a stifling defensive showing, haker scored her second hat trick in as many games. two of her tallies came off free position shots, while another came off a feed from senior shannon Carta, staking the sea gulls to a 5-0 lead through 35 minutes.
it was an almost 180-degree turn from 2012, the last time salisbury’s ju-niors lost a championship game, when trinity (Ct) led 4-0 at intermission before holding on for an 8-7 victory.
Before trinity (Ct) (19-3) staged a too-little, too-late rally that produced the final score, Baer sewed up most outstanding player honors with a pair of goals, her 47th and 48th of the season, to ensure that the sea gulls would repeat as national champions.
and to think: Baer and haker have a chance to add another title to that legacy next may.

Salisbury captures national crown in rematch of 2012 championship tilt: salisbury jumped out to an early lead against trinity (Ct) in the first half and was never seriously challenged the rest of the way en route to a 12-5 victory and its second nCaa Division iii women’s lacrosse crown in school history.
the last time two unbeaten teams met for the Diii title was in 2004, when middlebury edged tCnJ 13-11 in overtime.
the first half was virtually all salisbury, up 6-2 at the break. after trinity scored a couple of goals early in the second half, the sea gulls again set sail and cruised to the victory.
after falling short in the title game last year to trinity (Ct), the victory was especially sweet for salisbury.
senior attacker lauren Feusahrens recorded a game-high five goals on seven shot attempts. meanwhile, senior attacker maggie Roundy added a pair of goals for the gulls.
salisbury last won the national championship in 2010, after falling in the title game the year before.
ashton Wheatley played all 60 minutes and had nine saves between the pipes in the winning effort.

Trinity (CT) wins national title; Hildebrand’s late goals lift Bantams to program’s first title: Junior attacker Kaitlin hildebrand scored two of the most important goals in trinity (Ct) program history. she scored both the game-tying and the game-winning goals in the second half to lead the Bantams to an 8-7 victory against the top-ranked and previously-unde-feated salisbury sea gulls in the 2012 nCaa Division iii Championship.
hildebrand, senior co-captains liz Bruno and liza Beckler, junior goalkeep-er olivia Whitney, and sophomore attackmer shea Kusiak were named to the nCaa Championship all-tournament team, and Bruno took home most outstanding player honors. salisbury ends its year at 22-1.
trinity scored the only four goals of the first half, as the defensive unit of Beckler, junior mallory hinman and sophomores lyndsey shepard and midge Daniel held salisbury to just five shots and Whitney made saves on all three shots on goal. hildebrand scored the first goal of the game 2:04 into the contest on a wrap around the back of the goal, beating salisbury sophomore goalie ashton Wheatley who had left the crease. Bantam rookie midfielder Caroline hayes scored on a free position with 10:43 on the clock, and junior attacker hadley Duncan scored on a spin move fol-lowed by a bouncing shot past Wheatley for a 3-0 trinity lead with 7:12 remaining. Kusiak completed the first-half scoring with just under five minutes left before the break, darting through the sea gull defense up the middle. salisbury junior midfielder Kara Koolidge hit the post on a shot from close late in the first half to account for the closest sea gull chance of the opening stanza. the sea gulls committed 11 turnovers in the first half and faced a four-goal deficit for the first time this spring.
salisbury answered in a big way after intermission, scoring five unan-swered goals beginning with an unassisted tally by senior midfielder alys-sa Fowler just 48 seconds into the second half. sea gull junior midfielder lauren Feusahrens fed rookie Bethany Baer on the second salisbury goal and scored twice more to tie the game at 4-4 with 19:14 on the clock. senior midfielder amanda holsclaw scored from junior attackman Katie Bollhorst at the 17:11 mark to give salisbury its first and only lead at 5-4.
Just over one minute after falling behind for the first time of the weekend, hildebrand drew a foul on an attempt from the left side and converted the ensuing free-position shot with a shot high and to the left of Wheat-ley. hildebrand, who scored the game-winning goal with four seconds left in trinity’s nEsCaC Finals win against middlebury and the game-tying goal to force overtime in the nEsCaC semifinal win against hamilton two weekends ago, netted the clincher in this game with 13:07 remaining, as Bruno found her cutting down the middle from the right wing. Duncan tallied trinity’s third free-position goal of the game with 11:16 left, and Bruno powered through the sea gull defense and scored to give the Ban-
tams a three-goal cushion at 8-5 with just under 10 minutes remaining in the contest. Baer scored a minute later and again with 2:28 left to close the deficit to one, but trinity was awarded the draw on a violation and trinity held possession until the final seconds. salisbury pressured the ball aggressively in the final two minutes, but Duncan hustled down a pair of loose balls to help preserve the win.
trinity doubled salisbury’s ground ball total, 14-to-7, and held an 18-to-14 edge on shots, while salisbury led on draw controls, 11-to-6, but commit-ted 16 turnovers and came up empty on two free positions. hildebrand had a hat trick, while Bruno totaled one goal, one assist, and a game-high five ground balls, and junior midfielder megan leonhard won four draw controls. Beckler caused three turnovers, and Whitney finished with five saves. Baer scored three times for salisbury, while senior midfielder allie Wheatley totaled four draw controls, and ashton Wheatley stopped four shots. the Bantam women’s lacrosse squad, appearing in the nCaa tour-nament for the eighth time and the third year in a row, gave trinity its sec-ond nCaa title as an institution. the trinity baseball team won the 2008 title with a 45-1 record, while trinity’s men’s squash team won national in-tercollegiate crowns 13 years in a row from 1998 to 2011, and the Bantam women’s squash team won national titles in 2002 and 2003.

Gettysburg’s first half sparks title win; Gettysburg’s Church named Most outstanding Performer: gettysburg captured its first nCaa Divi-sion iii championship in dominating fashion with a 16-5 victory over Bow-doin in the women’s lacrosse finals held on sunday.
the Bullets scored 11 goals in the first half and never let the polar Bears get back in the game.
appearing in its second national final ever, gettysburg (19-4) handily won its first national title in program history, and just the second national championship ever attained school history. the 1980 field hockey team won the association for intercollegiate athletics for Women (aiaW) Divi-sion iii title, a squad on which current women’s lacrosse coach Carol Can-tele was a member.
most outstanding performer hannah Church finished with a gettysburg record-tying eight points on five goals and three assists. Kelsey mar-kiewicz pumped in four goals for the second-straight day and was also named all-tournament, while junior goalie maddie Coleman garnered all-tournament accolades after posting nine saves in the final.
Joining the aforementioned trio on the nCaa all-tournament team were sophomore lindsey Robinson, who finished with one goal and three as-sists, and sophomore mairead mcguirk, who led gettysburg to a 13-10 advantage in draw controls.

2007Diplomats’ win over Salisbury an exercise in control: Franklin & marshall approached the Division iii Women’s lacrosse Championship with a simple philosophy: control the ball, control the game. the Diplomats did just that, beating salisbury, 11-8, by winning most of the second-half draws and forc-ing the sea gulls to vigorously defend their goal.the championship game was may 20 at William smith.Franklin & marshall opened with an unassisted goal from ashley Bevington less than a minute into the contest. From there, the teams traded goals until they had four apiece at the half.the Diplomats scored three consecutive goals to start the second half, as-sisted by six straight draw victories. Jen pritchard, the tournament’s most outstanding player, scored all of her four goals in the second half. teammate sarah meisenberg also scored four times in the contest.the sea gulls made a run during the closing seconds, with senior natalie De-gele and sophomore Robyn Bishop both scoring within 13 seconds of each other, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Diplomats’ lead.the 21-2 sea gulls, whose only two defeats came at the hands of Franklin & marshall, set school records for goals, assists and points scored.Franklin & marshall’s undefeated season was only the 12th in Division iii women’s lacrosse, and the title is the institution’s second. 2006Lions ride prolific scorer to Women’s Lacrosse Championship: senior midfielder lauren Dougher of the College of new Jersey finished her la-crosse career on a high note in the Division iii championship, leading the lions to the 2006 title over gettysburg and breaking the record for career goals scored in the postseason.Bolstered by four goals from Dougher and a hat trick from teammate Rachel gordon, the lions repeated as champion by beating the previously unde-feated Bullets, 10-4, at stevens institute may 21.the 2005 victory was over a heavily favored team as well — salisbury came into the game ranked no. 1, just as gettysburg did this year.Dougher was named the tournament’s most outstanding player, an honor she also earned in 2005. she ends her career with 50 goals in the Division iii tournament, surpassing the 46 scored by fellow lion Jen hart. Dougher also ends with 66 points, equaling the mark set by former middlebury playerKristen hanley.the lions last won consecutive titles in the mid-1990s, when they were crowned champions six years in a row. the lions finished the season 15-2, with their only losses coming earlier in the season to gettysburg and Cortland state, both by one goal. in the end, though, tCnJ stopped gettysburg just short of perfection, as the Bullets fin-ished at 21-1.Dougher led the team’s assertive offense, but the lions’ defense was smoth-ering, holding the Bullets to their lowest goal total since 1998. two of gettys-burg’s first five shots bounced off the post, but the Bullets finally connected with 8:24 to play in the first half. tCnJ dominated the game from start to finish, allowing only one goal in the first period, then holding the Bullets without a score until 12:25 left in the game.
2005Lions Turn Tide on Sea Gulls: the College of new Jersey won its first national championship since 2000 with a 9-7 victory over previously no. 1-ranked salisbury. the game was played on the lions’ home turf may 22.tCnJ’s senior midfielder lauren gossner struck first four minutes into play, and the goal stood until nearly 19 minutes later when the sea gulls’ amanda tack connected. the lions answered with two quick goals, both from junior Bridget Bigley, to put them up, 3-1. With about 11 minutes left in the half, salisbury attacker lynsey Bateman reduced the lead to one with an unas-sisted goal, but gossner quickly answered to restore the two-goal lead with a free-position goal. Bateman scored again in the final minute to reduce the margin to 4-3.tCnJ came out strong in the second half, scoring three unanswered goals --two from gossner and one from lauren Dougher -- putting the lions up, 7-3.Bateman scored her third goal of the game with about 15 minutes to play, but gossner was having a career-best performance, scoring again for a 9-5 lions lead at the 10-minute mark.salisbury’s linda ackermann completed a hat trick of her own with back-to-back goals, pulling the sea gulls to within two, but neither team scored in the remaining 6:43 of the game. the lions monopolized the ball for more than five minutes down the stretch before turning it over with just 12 sec-onds left to play, but salisbury couldn’t capitalize.gossner led the lions with a career-best five goals and six points. Bigley had three goals, while goalkeeper megan marquardt recorded nine saves. salis-bury was led by Bateman and ackermann with three goals apiece, while sea gulls goalie ali goetz had 10 saves.the lions have won 11 titles, 10 under pfluger’s tutelage. the national cham-pionship appearance was a first for the sea gulls, who finished the season 17-1, including earlier victories over tCnJ and then-no. 1-ranked middle-bury.
