Exploring District Convention. What is DCON?

DCON stands for District Convention. It is

held in Dallas, TX. Last year more than

1,200 Key Clubbers gathered to support their

District and their clubs. DCON is 3 days long

during the month of April at the Sheraton

Hotel in Dallas. DCON is a place to learn

about different leadership opportunities that

exist within the Key Club hierarchy, how to

improve their clubs, innovative takes on ser-

vice projects, officer duties information ses-

sions, called forums, banquets, dance parties,

District Staff elections, bylaw amendments, a

beautiful hotel, and much much more.

Why should my club and me go? What

will I take out of this experience?

By visiting forums you will add to your

knowledge bank and

learn everything you

need to know to best

fulfill your duties as a

member/officer/

president/sponsor. If you

better understand the

organization you are

serving, become more

involved, get excited,

and have fun, you will be

invaluable to this organi-

zation. This is why we

want you here! For seniors, it is a wonderful

opportunity to celebrate the hard work put

into serving the community.

You/

someone in

your club

may run for

District Staff office. Getting a club member

in the district staff will be extremely valuable

to furthering your club’s involvement in Key

Club culture. enhance the club experience,

but also it may add to your confidence, re-

sume, service initiatives, and leadership

skills.

DCON is a great place to have fun as well!

While we

spend a lot

of time

bettering

attendee’s

under-

standing of

Key Club,

we know

how to

have a blast. Each evening the District Board

puts together a program while you enjoy a

Packed November! What are you do-ing to make some-one thankful?

So Kiwanis is structured very similar

to Key Club. We have club level,

divisions, the Texas-Oklahoma Dis-

trict, and the international sector. So

let’s take a second and know the

people. Susan Hennum is the new

Texas-Oklahoma Kiwanis District

Governor for 2011-2012.

Her projects should

impact the Key Clubbers as well,

since we are a K-family! Key

Clubber, I know how much you

love to help out This is your

chance Stand by Susan in her

Governor’s Project. Soles for

Orphan Souls, an organization

that collects shoes and socks for

disadvantaged child orphans. This is

a beautiful cause and opportunity to

serve. Thanks Susan!

November is K-Family and

Prematurity month

(March of Dimes to support

prematurely-born babies)

K-Family?

Kiwanis is an amazing organiza-

tion because it helps foster lead-

ership outside of its personal

agenda. This is how we have

Key Club. In 1925, Key Club was

first chartered by Kiwanis with

the focus, “Children: Their future;

our focus”. Your Kiwanians break

their backs to support your clubs

service projects and financial

endeavours. Show a little love.

Have you thanked them for their

hard work? Have you talked to

your sponsoring club recently?

Do you send them your monthly

reports? I encourage you to

complete the following check list.

Email your Kiwanis sponsor

to see if you can participate

in upcoming service pro-

jects

Invite them to your meet-

ings

Attend the Kiwanis Division

Council Meetings (DCMs).

Ask me about when and

where. I will give you the

DL!

Plan to participate in the

Kiwanis International Major

Emphasis Project (MEP),

ELIMINATE, to protect the

connection between mother

and child by eradicating a

disease from the face of our

earth, to delete Neonatal-

maternal Tetnus.

Prematurity Awareness Month

Getting involved in the

Kiwanis Governor’s Project is such a

rewarding opportunity. This is a great

way to bond with your Kiwanis clubs

and really be able to experience one

of the next levels after Key Club!

It is about time that Key Clubs are

responsive to Kiwanis rather than just

Kiwanis being responsive to Key

Club. Service is about supporting

others through human love and car-

ing. Why not extend that to the peo-

ple who gave us these amazing

opportunities to serve.

Sophomore of the Year

Scholarship

Kiwanis sponsors hundreds of schol-

arships to support their Key Clubbers

in their university endeavors. And this

award is no exception. Sophomores

may apply to be recognized by T-O

Kiwanis District by submitting the

application.

Many of you have asked me where to

send the form. At the time I could not

tell you, however, now….you will

send the form to our Division 3 Kiwa-

nis Lieutenant Governor Gwen

Branch at: Gwendolyn Branch 8203 Enchanted Forest Dr. Houston TX 77088 K-Family guys! Do not forget! They help us out whenever we need it, bond with them! Kiwanians = BFFs

Your Kiwanians need and want your

help. Visit them through

service projects, ask them to

participate in a Kiwanis

luncheon, go to their DCMs,

invite them to your meet-

ings, email them, call them,

COMMUNICATE. Every

time a Key Club has needed

help, your sponsoring clubs

do anything to fix your problems.

Your Kiwanians funded an AMAZING

FTC, bus transportation, everything.

In the United States, 1 in 8 babies is

born prematurely.

Worldwide, 13 million babies are born

too soon each year.

March of Dimes, our official Key Club ser-

vice project needs our support. November is

their awareness month campaign.

In 2003, the March of Dimes launched the

Prematurity Campaign address the crisis

and help families have full-term, healthy

babies. We’re funding lifesaving research

and speaking out for legislation that im-

proves care for moms and babies. World-

wide, 13 million babies are born prema-

turely each year.

You can show your sup-

port by raising money to

donate to March of Dimes

foundation and by holding

awareness drives. Let’s

show our support!

Dragon Boat Racing Makes a Splash with Key Clubs!

Kempner and Lamar put their back

into it while they rowed at the Octo-

ber Dragon Boat Regatta.

Dragon boat racing is a

chinese sport that requires

22 crew members. Each

person has to work as a unit

of a team. In other words, in

order to move the 500

pound boat, everyone has to

be stroking at exactly the

same pace. It was an amaz-

ing time! There was music,

dragon dances, inflatable

sumo wrestling, and a bunch of

smiles! These clubs will definitely be

working together again in the future.

Great job guys!

Kempner and Lamar join forc-

es to take the gold, 3rd place

in their division! Who says

service clubs can’t have fun?

What’s up 3S? Send me your pictures from your

service initiatives, socials, inter-

clubs, district events, everything!

Even meetings! I would love to

feature you all on my newsletter!

I know that you are all working

extremely hard, so why not brag

a little? :P

Embarassing District Staff picture

from K-Family board meeting? I

think yes. Colten Meisner is a

peanut. LOVELY. Man, I wish I

thought of that….

Lamar Key Club is taking advantage

of Spooky October! Their Key Club

volunteered at the Bellaire Pumpkin

Patch, an event where young chil-

dren get to participate in arts and

crafts, play games, and have a great,

festive time. Definitely my favorite

service projects are with kids, and

this was no exception.

Kempner is taking DCON fundrais-

ing my storm! With already 2 orga-

nized restaurant spirit nights they are

well on their way to get their mem-

bers to district convention! Their Key

Club, family and friends pulled to-

gether and had a social dinner at

local restaurant, Uptown Deli. There

was delicious cake and amazing

grub! Next time,

Kempner wants YOU

and your club to

come out to support.

Who can ever have

too much Key Club

and too much cake?
