President’s Report The past year has seen Diving Queensland make inroads in the delivery of quality workshops on offer for all members. Continuation of this throughout the Association’s various clinics and workshops will lead to larger participation across all clubs in regard to volunteering and officiating.

2017 was the first year of the three-year funding cycle of the State Government Development Funding Program. Our Strategic plan (2017-2019) is well underway. We continue to rely heavily on registration and participation of recreational divers to maintain this funding.

Committee

The Diving Queensland Board has met regularly to ensure fairness to all, and to provide oversight of the Association, which encompasses finance, policies and procedures, and most importantly, to progress our strategic vision and operation plan.

Current members of the Diving Queensland Board are: President: Heidi Graymore Vice President: Jennifer Waldroff Treasurer: Sue Stafford Directors: Kevin Hall Di Smith Stuart Graymore Sue-Elen Noort State Executive director: Janne Ellis (non-voting)

The commitment and efforts made by our Board is to be congratulated, along with our many sub-committees that involve significant participation in voluntary capacities. These include competitions committee, selection panel, finance committee, coaching committee, as well as uniforms officer, SDS manager, Media Officer and School Sport team Manager. For all your volunteering efforts, thank you.

To our outgoing directors, I thank you for your service. To our newly elected board members, I look forward to a prosperous, but challenging year.

Coaching

A level 1 coach accreditation course was held in July, for 11 aspiring coaches. We look forward to watching the progression of our new level 1 coaches.

Officiating

In August, a Technical workshop was held in conjunction with the Competitions committee as part of the ongoing training component necessary to maintain judging levels. 30 participants attended; 16 active judges, and 14 new judges who attained level 1 status after successfully passing their exams. We look forward to seeing our new judges at all competitions to gain vital experience necessary for proficiency. We look forward to continued success for Queensland judges who represent the Association well both here, and for many of our judges attending interstate national competitions, and also international events.

As part of the achievement of a positive legacy to create long lasting benefits for communities, as a result of the Gold Coast hosting the 2018 Commonwealth Games, GOLDOC and Diving Australia provided funding to Diving Queensland to deliver this successful Technical Workshop. We thank GOLDOC and Diving Australia for their support.

Competitions

Diving Queensland holds several competitions, as well as State championships to give our athletes every opportunity to qualify for national championships, and to represent Queensland.

The competitions committee consists of 4 volunteers who dedicate many countless hours before, during and after competitions to ensure the smooth and effective running of these events. We rely heavily on volunteers to assist at every competition. Volunteer numbers in 2017 increased slightly, but we look forward to more people putting up their hand to help out for the benefit of our divers.

Diving Queensland again formed a partnership with Queensland School Sport, and sent a team of 9 students, team manager, team teacher, 1 coach, and 1 official to the Pacific School Games. The team performed extremely well, and proudly represented their schools, and the state of Queensland. Preparation is already underway for the School Sport Australia Championships to be held in Perth, WA in September.

Membership / Recreational registrations

As has been reported in recent years, the decline of registrations in the recreational category has yet again continued for 2017. Decrease in revenue will inevitably result in increases in other areas.

A brief outline of what DQ provides clubs:

• Professional qualifying competitions

• Reduced fees for novice divers at competitions – novice divers do not pay board fees currently.

• Reduced fees for synchro events

• No charge for Club team challenge entry

• State Development Squad opportunities

• Administrative support

• Important State Govt funding

• Recording secretariat volunteer training workshops

• Judges workshops

• On call assistance whenever required

• Level 1 coaching courses

• Opportunities to be involved in Qld School Sport Although, these points may not directly refer to recreational divers, the work done to train volunteers in every aspect, and to train divers themselves, all impact positively to help ALL our divers succeed to what ever level in the sport they choose.

Media

With the commencement of our new volunteer Media Officer, great gains have been made in firstly creating a new Facebook page, and making posts that are user friendly and relevant. Social media is a fast paced medium that requires an understanding of what is relevant to people. It has been a welcome improvement to see us move from out-dated re-sharing of information, to interesting posts that members can connect to, and interact with. I look forward to further gains being made in the coming year with our website and also other forms of social media. I encourage all our clubs and members to have an involvement with the information sharing process we are trying to provide.

Congratulations

Congratulations were extended to all recipients of trophies at our Annual Awards lunch (listed further in the report). Thanks to Sue-Ellen Noort and Heidi Graymore and others for organising the Annual Awards day at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre, which provided participants with an amazing luncheon with chicken kebabs, fruit, desserts, Christmas goodie bags for all children, and of course the trophies.

We congratulate the fantastic success of Sara Cameron and Sansanee Lagerway who attended the FINA World Masters Championships in Budapest, Hungary in August. Sara competed 1m and 3m events in the 30-34 age group to win bronze for both, while Sanee competed 1m, 3m and platform in the 25-29 age group to win 2 bronze medals and a silver. They joined forces in the 3m synchro, which earned them another silver medal to bring home.

Congratulations also to Georgia Sheehan, and Domonic Bedggood for selection in the Australian team for the 2018 Commonwealth Games held on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia.

Conclusion

The past year for Diving Queensland has not seen the positive growth that was anticipated from the previous year. We need a shift in attitudes toward Diving Queensland in order for the Association to see the growth necessary.

We continue to strive for a cohesive relationship between clubs in Queensland. The focus of the board is to our athletes, and to be successful nationally. Together, we can work toward Queensland being a national force to be reckoned with.

On behalf of the Board, we are grateful to the State Government, Diving Australia, Queensland School Sport, sponsors, and all other agencies with whom we work. Thank you to all our volunteers working for the betterment of the sport of diving in Queensland, and for the opportunities provided to our divers because of you.

My personal thanks go to the Board, Di, Kevin, Jennifer, Sue, Stuart, Sue-Ellen, and to Janne, who have assisted me during the last year.

Heidi Graymore President

State Executive Director’s Report

Team Work – the only thing that will reassure and assist our mighty athletes to achieve their goals. It takes a lot of volunteers and others to wend through the course and pathways to greater glory. Strength is in the ability for those volunteers to encourage the respect in our workforce that will only reinforce those athlete’s willingness to participate as Queenslanders, and other volunteers to ‘want’ to be a part of a good team.

“Get on Board”

One for the Volunteers especially – it is our call to all to assist where ever you can to lift the burden on so few – you will be most welcome.

State Government

We are grateful for the assistance received from the Department Officers. Their advice and attention to our

sport is most gratifying, and we enjoy a mutual respect for what is sometimes a difficult role. We have completed the first year of the 3 years funding allocation (2017-2019) and look forward to continued achievement and supporting our goals.

Commonwealth Games

Held at the Gold Coast in April 2018 saw our Queenslanders Domonic Bedggood and Georgia Sheehan claim victory – sensational. We also credit our band of volunteers who officiated at the Games in a multitude of roles, that saw a smoothly run event and great for all to see.

Membership

Fees have been contained or reduced to suit the needs of the existing membership. While this is a need, the Board is charged with the responsibility of ensuring the fees can sustain our Organisation.

If Clubs would ensure their full registration to Diving Queensland, then changes may not be necessary until hopefully 2019, however with recreation divers not being registered, it is unlikely that this will be the case. The registered divers et al, are in a position where they will have to subsidise those non-registered membership categories.

If Clubs are considering that it is only the insurance component of the fee that they are getting as a better product than what is provided by Diving Australia to Diving Queensland and onforwarded to the registered members, then that is a thought process in error, and needs to change before the roll-over in June/July 2018.

State Squads

Our most enduring State Development Squad will change very soon and will be a different Squad as proposed by the Club Engagement Strategy as proffered by DA, with input from the DQ Board and the Clubs. DQ is keen to move forward with this opportunity not previously presented and see it as a positive model that DQ could well use to its advantage – watch this space!

Diving Moving Forward

With the recent appointments by Diving Australia to enhance the elite programmes of Steve Foley (General Manager, Performance and Pathways), and Ady Hinchliffe (National Diving Coach – Brisbane), Diving Queensland is particularly heartened to have the opportunity to work together in a spirit of collaboration to increase the performances of Divers in Queensland. The plans are also to install many more Coaches to the fraternity, all of whom will bring greater participation to our Clubs. It is an exciting time for all concerned, with the outcome to be of benefit to Athletes, Coaches et al. There is much work to be done and new thinking to be aware of that will bring the future forward for us all.

Conclusion

Many thanks to the Board Members for the role that you play in this Association and of course the commitment and dedication to that role. Special mention here to Toni Toohey and Heidi Graymore, who received Life Membership from DQ in 2017. These awards are made to people who have gone above and beyond to assist our sport over many years - congratulations

Committee Reports Coaching Coordinator’s Report

Diving Queensland conducted a two-day Level 1 Course in July last year. There were eleven participants, all passed their written exams. Courtney Graymore, Wayne Cobb, Sophie Johnson, Sarah Lafleur, Emily Boyd, Emily Meaney, Greg Holbrook, Holly Cushing, Jasmine Fraser, Sue-‘Ellen Noort & Alysha Koloi. Xiangning Chen was the Course presenter for the Dry land and Water components of the course. Most participants have completed their 50 hours, received and their Coaching Certificate and are Coaching for their Clubs.

The Recreation program is conducted in most school holidays. It gives our Coaches and training Coaches an opportunity to Coach children who are not involved in Club programs and to encourage them to come along and join a Club and grow our sport.

Di Smith Coaching Coordinator

Competition Director’s Report

2016-17 has been, yet again, another very hectic but successful year for the Diving Queensland Competitions Committee. The committee consists of four very dedicated Volunteers (Toni Toohey, Heidi Graymore, Stuart Graymore & Alan Smith) who pride themselves in running professional and efficient competitions.

To run a successful competition, we also need help from many volunteers ranging from Announcers, Recording Staff, Judges’ & Referees. A massive THANK YOU to all volunteers who helped over the year, because without them the competitions could not go ahead.

We offered six (6) qualifying competitions and two State Championships, each and every one run to Diving Australia Standards. We also assisted with the organising and running of the Queensland’s School Sport competition.

Queensland was well represented at all National Level competitions through the year.

We are looking forward to yet another very successful year of Diving.

Toni Toohey Competitions Convenor

Technical Coordinator’s Report

I am pleased to report Queensland has three level 4 judges, ten level 3, six level 2 judges. Congratulations to Stuart Graymore who has been upgraded to a level 5 and to Courtney Graymore on her recent level 4 upgrade. Over the recent weeks I have had 3 new people do the judges exam.

I encourage all current judges to read the National Officiating Policy to familiarise themselves with the judging maintenance and level upgrade requirements. I trust the current group of Queensland judges will be able to attend the upcoming DQ Qualifiers, State and Nationals titles to gain more experience and also receive the required evaluations which will count toward their subsequent level progression.

I am looking forward to working with you all again over the upcoming diving season. I wish all the best to the Judges, Competition Officials, Divers and Coaches for the upcoming year of competition.

Kevin Hall Technical Coordinator

Selection Panel Convenor’s Report

After the EOI had been sent out to members and after the November Qualifying competition 2017, the three Selectors had a meeting to select the 2017-18 State Development Squad. After some deliberation a team of ten members were chosen. Jaymee Kronenberg, Michaela Egan, Rebecca Barnier, Kodii Rayson, Charlie Drake, Marcus Perilla, Shumpei Komatsu, Lily Lonsdale, Shai-Lea Williams & Akayla Quinton. The Selection process for 2017-18 was much easier and giving a much fairer opportunity for the athletes from both streams of competition, with the selection being done in November. The November selection gives equal opportunity for athletes from both Age and Junior levels to compete in the required number of DQ Qualifying competitions after their respective National events, to achieve the SDS criteria. SDS Managers Report 2017

The 2017 State Development Squad consisted of 10 selected divers. The season involved 5 training clinics with 4 of them incorporating workshops. Workshops

W1: Welcome/ Introduction to the State Development Squad, athlete profiles and contact information W2: Nutrition – Presenter: Alexandra Clarke: General healthy eating, nutrition for recovery, hydration and health

snack ideas W3: Results Physiotherapy – Presenter: Sam Hodgkinson: The importance of recovery for athletes & correct

techniques to apply W4: Goal Setting – Ady Hinchliffe: Cancelled

National Coach’s Focus T1: To improve the basic skills and competition dives quality T2: To improve basic quality, twists and entry skills T3: Develop and improve competition quality T4: Develop and improve competition quality

The purpose of the workshops is to inform and educate the athletes in areas they will find useful when developing their diving career. All athletes walked away from each workshop with a clearer understanding and greater knowledge in the chosen areas. The final workshop of the year had to be cancelled due to limited number of attendance. Xiangning took the dryland and water training component of the clinic. Xiangning planned his sessions around the coaches input and diver development techniques. Club coaches were invited to attend to observe. After each session the athletes were asked to fill out a feedback form, scoring their performance and energy levels on a scale, and noting what they learnt and took away from the clinic. I am happy with the overall performance of the squad and it was a pleasure to manage.

All members of the Queensland team competed in the Team synchro event and the Knockout events on the final day of competition. These fun events were a nice way to end the championships. The behaviour of this team overall was exceptionally good. They represented Queensland and their schools well. We chose not to attend the Educational excursion due to lack of time after half a day of competition, as well as receiving advice from other States about the relevance of talks to our students. We held a Queensland team lunch which went extremely well, with good food. 21 in attendance. We departed Adelaide with many great memories, and new friendships. Huge thanks go to the following people who made this possible: Heidi Graymore – Qld Team Manager; Anne Maree Leonard – Qld teacher; Special thanks to Stuart Graymore for judging/refereeing and announcing some events; and others for assisting with out-of-pool activities. At the Post event diving meeting, all States were advised that Diving will not be participating in Pacific School Games in the future if the current format remains the same. The School Sport Australia Championships will be held in Perth in September 2018.
