SSTRIDE• Science Students Together Reaching Excellence and Diversity in

Education (SSTRIDE) – started in 1994• Provides middle and high school students intervention and

enhanced instruction in science and mathematics. • Implemented in six Florida counties: Leon County, Collier,

Orange, and the rural counties of Gadsden, Walton, and Okaloosa.

• Focus on URM, disadvantaged, and rural students. • Rigorous science and mathematics classes, personal tutoring,

and test-taking workshops, and hands-on laboratory and clinical experiences.

• Each summer students from these programs participate in the Summer Institute at the College of Medicine.

Summer Institute• Designed for rising juniors and seniors in high school,

sponsored by the College of Medicine • Provides a “week in the life” of a medical student to help

them realize what is achievable with the right planning, advising, and encouragement.

• Housed in a FSU dorm for the week. • Receive lectures by medical school faculty and interact

with 2nd year current medical students. • Advised on how to optimize their schedules for college

admission and the pre-health track. • Paired with physicians in Tallahassee for shadowing

experiences.

U-SSTRIDE• Office of Outreach and Advising at the College of Medicine• Designed to increase diversity in the medical school:

– Provides academic advising / mentorship for pre-med organizations, – Tutoring services / study groups - Collegiate Mentoring Initiative (CMI). – Oversee the Minority Association of Pre-medical Students (MAPS) – Opportunities to develop / solidify their medical career interests– Participate in experiences to diversity their interests – Develop leadership skills and experiences, and participate in events and

activities to foster academic, personal, and professional development– Partner with agencies for opportunities for community involvement.

• Students planning healthcare careers seek guidance regarding pre-requisites, testing, and application process

• Handbooks are provided for each professional goal.

Honors Medical Scholars

• Started in 2006 - 15 accepted / year. • Open to students accepted to the FSU Honors College and

have an interest in medicine. • Must have a high level of academic ability, a heart for

service, and a sincere concern for vulnerable populations through volunteer service activities during high school.

• Receive mentoring, advising, and special programs to encourage continued academic excellence in a rigorous pre-medical curriculum

• Continued service to vulnerable populations to develop appropriate professional and personal competencies to ensure success in medical school and as a physician.

MS- Bridge to Clinical Medicine• Provides minority, disadvantaged, and rural students with a bridge to

medical school or a career in healthcare. • Twelve-month MS degree program that provides education in medical

knowledge and experiences in clinical and community-service. • Typical enrollment 12-14 per year • Students complete 32 credit-hours of coursework (two medical school

courses with 1st year medical students). • Must complete a research project and submit written and oral reports. • Participants mentor middle and high school students and participate in

a clinical preceptorship.

• 94.9% of those starting the Bridge Program, complete the program and enter the FSU College of Medicine

• 96.1% of students who enter medical school through Bridge earn their MD.

• 75% of MD grads (57/76) enter PC residencies• 32 former Bridge now in medical practice

– 78.1% (25 / 32) in PC, – 15.6% Rural, – 37.5% in inner city clinics or hospitals– 2 are now FSU College of Medicine faculty
