The Bike Rack Race Team (TBRRT) is seeking sponsors for its 2009 season and beyond. As it did during the course of 2008, The Bike Rack Race Team offers sponsors unrivaled visibility for their name and logo, thus reaching thousands of new consumers and associating the sponsor with a vibrant, exciting and fast-growing sport.

Young, energetic, highly visible and results-driven, the team performed impressively in its first year showing undeniable potential for growth in the local and Mid-Atlantic cycling circuits. Sponsors will provide the opportunity to continue to develop a top-tier amateur cycling program, with the objective of major victories and the hosting of a race in the Washington, D.C. Metro area in the coming years.

INTRODUCTION

Promote cycling in the Washington, D.C. Metro area by providing cyclists with an inclusive team environment in which to train and compete.

Support all team members (male, female, junior and master) to perform competitively and achieve their goals.

Develop positive ties between cycling and the local community through involvement in local events.

Maintain the tradition of sportsmanship that is a hallmark of competitive cycling and to personify cycling’s positive attributes on the road and in the community.

Why Sponsor a Cycling Team?So, cycling is popular, and the Washington region is a great place to ride a bike. But WHY sponsor a team?

The Right Audience – Cyclists and their supporters tend to be affluent, making for a strategic advertising demographic. According to the National Sporting Goods Association, over 62 percent of households that ride bikes make more than $50,000 a year, with 23 percent making over $100,000 a year.

Visibility… – Think of the members of a cycling team as rolling billboards, with the name and logos of their sponsors featured prominently on the team uniforms that they wear during year round rides and races over the course of the seven-month season. With your name on a team uniform, you’re guaranteeing thousands of hours of mobile visibility.

… Exposure – Sponsoring a cycling team doesn’t just include having your name and logo on a jersey. Many local teams sponsor races which attract hundreds of cyclists and fans, giving sponsors a full day worth of exposure. And teams have other resources, including websites and team tents– all of which will include a sponsor’s name and logo.

A Smart and Sustainable Investment – With cycling’s increasing popularity and a heightened sense of environmental awareness throughout the country, sponsoring a cycling team is a progressive and environmentally-conscious investment in a sustainable and increasingly popular activity.

Unrivaled VisibilityIn Competition – As a sponsor of The Bike Rack Race Team, your name and logo will appear on the uniform, website and equipment of one of the Mid-Atlan-tic region’s most active teams. In our first year of racing, we fielded 273 entries and participated in almost 30 races. That amount of racing takes dedicated training – 93,000 miles over the course of 5,400 hours during the year, to be exact. Team members had structured training sessions on local roads Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays throughout the year, along with the additional miles each and every team member logs individually.

In the Community – Outside of competition, the Bike Rack Race Team offers sponsorship visibility among an inclusive cycling community. The members of the race team started riding together on The Bike Rack’s Sunday community ride, a 40-mile weekly outing that attracts 25-70 riders year-round. We don’t easily forget our roots, and Sunday is still reserved for our shop ride, where new recreational riders are warmly welcomed into the fold – among a sea of team uniforms. On top of the Sunday ride, we host a beginner’s ride on Saturday that continues to increase in popularity each week. This is a community of friends, family, neighbors and consumers. Your name and logo will become a familiar sight to the full Bike Rack community.

We’re proud to be one of the few D.C.-based teams. Better yet, we’re the only team in D.C. that works closely with a local business, in this case, The Bike Rack store in Logan Circle. The community surrounding our team, comprised of both members and recreational riders, are proud District residents. We pay taxes here. We vote here. We shop in local stores and eat in local restaurants. We understand the needs of our local business community, and we want to do our part to help it succeed.

Competing – More than just showing up at races, we performed strongly in 2008. Members of The Bike Rack Race Team won 10 races, stepped up to the podium 20 times and placed among the top 10 finishers 41 times. Team members Sam McCadney, Lance Anderson, Timothy Rugg, and Timothy Brown won significant races in their categories, often multiple times.

Cooperating – Throughout all this competition, the team also developed a reputation as friendly, responsible and willing to help. The Bike Rack Race Team was the only local team to volunteer at the ING Direct Capital Criterium, a professional-level race in downtown Washington, D.C. that drew thousands of spectators and hundreds of world-class cyclists. The Bike Rack Race Team also co-sponsored Juniors’ Day Out, a day-long event in Sykesville, Maryland focused on promoting athletic competition among dis-abled individuals.

Cycling is BoomingCycling is Booming

Mayor Adrian Fenty makes cycling a part of his weekly exercise routine.

The District won Bicycling magazine’s award for “Most Improved City” for cycling in 2008.

The successful roll-out of the city’s innovative Smart-Bike bike-sharing program in August 2008 has attracted additional attention to cycling as a means of transport, exercise and recreation.

The presence of two professional races in the Metro area – the CSC Invitational in Arlington, Virginia and the new-for-2008 ING Capital Criterium in Washington, D.C. – has brought a spotlight to local competitive cycling.

Once considered an exclusively European sport, cycling – both recreational and competitive – has exploded in popularity in the U.S. in the last decade. Between 1995 and 2005, the sale of bicycles jumped by 36 percent.

Bike sales are growing in the face of an economic downturn – the rise in gasoline prices and concerns for the environment have more people riding bikes than at any recent time.

According to the League of American Bicyclists, 100 million people in the U.S. now ride a bike at least once a month, and over 20 million bicycles are sold annually.

More and more American cyclists are performing – and winning – at the international level. Beyond seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong, who has recently announced his return to professional cycling, American cyclists such as Christian Vande Velde and Levi Leipheimer performed impressively in professional races across the world.

The Mid-Atlantic racing scene is extremely active, with 36 amateur races occurring during the months of February-September in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey and the District.

There are a number of professional races in the region. For 2009, six of the 34 races in the USA Cycling National Racing Calendar are between Pennsylvania and Virginia, including two in the immediate Washington, D.C. Metro area.

The area’s favorable weather and diverse terrain has yielded a large number of organized clubs and races, making the Mid-Atlantic area amongst the most active in the country for competitive cycling.

Bike Rack TV offers unprecedented and one-of-a-kind visibility to the sponsors of

The Bike Rack Race Team.

Bike Rack TV, created by shop-owners Wayne Lerch and Chuck Harney along with producer Richard Murby, is a news-magazine-style TV show to showcase cycling across the entire Mid-Atlantic region. The show will feature race information (both amateur and professional), training information, tech-nique tips, equipment reviews and a wealth of other content appealing to all cyclists from beginners to seasoned racers.

Producer Richard Murby has this to say about Bike Rack TV: “With cost effective methods for distribution enabled by the internet, we are able to produce a show that comes from within the community it seeks to serve. The interest from the cycling community in this project has been amazing and we look forward to shaping the show to reflect this large and growing sport with such a dedicated following.”
