PHOTO: DELIAH BRINKHUIS REFEREE KNIFED ON BADEN POWELL AFTER STORMERS MATCH Stabbed in Hell Run zone DELIAH BRINKHUIS Well-known rugby referee Shaun Veldsman became the latest vic- tim of crime in the N2 precinct when he was attacked on the Baden Powell turn-off on Satur- day night. Veldsman was returning home to Robertson after officiating in the match between the Stormers and the Blues at Newlands Stadium. The attack occurred just after 21:00. Veldsman says it happened very quickly. “I stopped at the intersection and was about to turn towards Stel- lenbosch when my window was smashed. Two or three men were at my window,” Veldsman recalls. “I screamed and jumped over to the passenger’s side to get out,” he says. One of his attackers lunged at him with a sharp object, stabbing him in the back. Veldsman only realised that he had been stabbed once he started running away from his attackers. He tried flagging motorists down, but was unsuccessful. “No-one stops at that hour,” he says. Mercifully, he came across a man who was walking along the road who was prepared to accompany him to his bakkie. Veldsman says in his trau- matised state he omitted to ask the man who he was. He found his Isuzu bakkie deserted. The keys had been removed from the ignition and his cellphone, which had been on the dashboard, was missing. He was eager to get away from the scene in case his attackers were lurking in the dark. They had tried to break the ignition and take the steering wheel off, but they were unable to start the bakkie. A few minutes later a tow-truck drove past and Veldsman flagged it down. He was then admitted to the ICU of Mediclinic Stel- lenbosch, and was trans- ferred to a general ward on Sunday. On Wednesday, Veldsman was positive about his recovery, say- ing that he was doing well and that he hoped to be discharged by the end of the week. His attack comes just over a month after Ma- cassar resident Julius Jantjies (27) was severe- ly injured when part of a cement block was hurled through his windscreen on the N2. The inci- dent happened at 13:00 on Wednesday 7 January about 300 m before the R300 turn-off. Jantjies, a driver for the DTM Nis- san dealership in Strand, and a col- league were on their way to collect a car in Sea Point. The cement block hit Jantjies, resulting in severe injuries. He was kept in an induced coma for two weeks after the attack. His father Julius Jantjies sr says his son has since had operations to his jaw, nose and right eye to recon- struct his face. Jantjies says tests are still being conducted to determine if his vision in his right eye will recover completely. ) What is to be done about the Hell Run zone? Hell Run:meeting scheduledDELIAH BRINKHUIS ANDDALEEN FOUCHÉ

The City of Cape Town this weekemphasised the importance ofworkingwithallrelevantauthor-ities if the scourge of attacksalong theN2andrelated routes isto be addressed.

This is in light of the most recentattack, which occurred when well-known rugby referee Shaun Velds-man was stabbed on the Baden Pow-ell off-ramp on Saturday night at21:00 (story on page 1).

The DistrictMail has written ex-tensively about the often brutally vi-olent attacks along the N2 betweenMacassar and the R300 and as far asVanguard Drive.

The City confirmed to theDistrict-Mail that this matter will be placedon the agenda of the monthly joint

meeting between the relevant stake-holders on 12 March. The meeting isconvened by the police and involvesvarious stakeholders in the safetyand security cluster.

JP Smith, Mayoral Committeemember for Safety and Security, says although much has been doneto prevent further attacks on the N2and surrounding areas, it is essen-tialthatthepolicecoordinatetherel-evant stakeholders in response tothe dangerous situation.

Lieutenant-Colonel André Traut, spokesperson for the provincial po-lice, did not comment on this state-ment before going to print, but em-phasised the fact that the route is be-ing policed. “It is imperative tomention that the entire route is wellpoliced by the Western Cape FlyingSquad assisted by patrols from thelocal police stations and other lawenforcement agencies.”

Traut says that during these pa-trols, specific consideration is givento certain hot spots, but still insiststhat travelling on the N2 “is no dif-ferent” to travelling on any otherroad.

Smith says the Metro Police regu-larly patrol the N2 and have hadsome success with protecting roadusers.

“The City’s freeway managementsystem CCTV camera team has beenrequested to alert the City’s opera-tional staff about any suspicious ac-tivity they may see when monitor-ing the cameras, but Smith says thisis made difficult by the sheer num-berofpedestrianscrossingtheN2ona daily basis.”

Metro Police have also used wom-an officers as “bait” while pretend-ing to be victims stranded on the N2,but this has not met with much suc-cess. Smith says the city is negotiat-

ing with a privateinsurance compa-ny to roll out a“highway unit”that will only pa-trol these free-ways and help im-prove safety alongthe N2, R300 andBaden Powell Road, as well as theN1.

The City is also finalising anagreement with the airport whichwill see it roll out law enforcementauxiliary members paid for by theAirports Company of South Africa(ACSA). “They will patrol along theN2 in uniform with all the powersof our law enforcement depart-ment.”

Vusi Mona, general manager ofcommunications at the South Afri-can Roads Agency Limited (Sanral),says the agency, together with law

enforcementand the City ofCape Town, hasa number ofmeasures inplace to sup-port crimefighting in this

area.These measures include the re-

pair of fencing along this route aswell as improving lighting that ena-bles cameras to film during thenight. “The fight against crime is anon-going one. We will continue tosupport law enforcement in theirfight against crime to the best ourability and means.”

Siphesihle Dube, spokespersonfor the provincial minister of Trans-port and Public Works, DonaldGrant, also confirmed that provin-cial traffic authorities have in-creased patrols on the N2.

Policemankilledbysuspect inSLPDELIAH BRINKHUIS

ThebrutalmurderofaSomersetWestpo-liceman on Tuesday has sent shockwaves through the Helderberg commu-nity.

Constable Lukhanyo Mtshokotsho (28)died in a shooting while on duty in Sir Low-ry’s Pass. Another policeman was woundedin the shooting.

The suspect was killed in a shoot-out thatfollowed after back-up was called in.

Western Cape Minister of Community,Dan Plato condemned the killing of the po-licemen. “The death of the perpetratorservesas little justice tothosegrievingacon-stable who risked his life on a daily basis,in an area known as dangerous among po-lice. It is clear that more needs to be doneto protect our brave men and women inblue,” he said.

According to Sergeant Suzan Jantjies, spokesperson for the Somerset West Police,Mtshokotsho and a colleague, Sergeant Li-onel Langford from the Crime PreventionUnit, were conducting a crime preventionoperation in the Tredonne and High Ridingarea at about 16:00 when the shooting inci-dent occurred.

“They approached a suspect whom theywanted to arrest,” says Jantjies.

A struggle ensued between the police andthe man, and he allegedly took Langford’sgun and shot him before fleeing into thedense, bushy area above the railway line.

Mtshokotsho followed the suspect into thebushes while calling for back-up. Jantjiessaid a shoot-out between the two followed, during which Mtshokotsho was fatallywounded.

The police’s Tactical Response Team re-sponded to the call for help. “During furthergunfire, the unknown suspect was shot andkilled,” says Jantjies.

She says the gun was found on the sceneand that Langford, who was admitted to theMediclinic Vergelegen, was recoveringwell. She was, however, unable to say whatthe extent of his injuries are.

Jantjies says the circumstances sur-rounding the shooting are being investigat-ed.

Plato asked the community to step in tohelp combat the killing of police membersby sending suggestions to his office to [email protected].“We need a whole-of-societyapproachinordertodoawaywiththe notion that criminals can dare attackor kill a police officer,” he said.

A former police constable and his co-accusedwere each sentenced to 30 years’ imprison-ment in the Somerset West Regional Courton 30 January.

The case relates to a house robbery on 6November 2009 when a former policeman,Unathi Ngewu, and his two accomplices, To-bela Lawrence Rasmeni and Xolani Takayi, robbed an elderly Somerset West couple.

Ngewu produced a police identity card togain entrance to the house.

Once inside the house, one of the menpulled out a gun and tied the couple up. Theythenproceededto robthemofanundisclosedamount of cash and a gold chain valued atR3 000.

Colonel Mary-Ann Williams, station com-mander for the Somerset West Police, wel-comed the sentence and said she hoped thatthe tough sentence will deter members of thepolice from committing crime.

Williams also congratulated the investi-gating officer, Detective Warrant OfficerHannes Niemand, who had brought Ngewu,TakayiandRasmenitobook, forhisexcellentinvestigation that led to the sentencing of thethree men.

Missingpensioner found in carDALEEN FOUCHÉ

“What took you so long?”

This was the question a “spirited” KeithBird (74) asked when friends found him in theSteenbras Nature Reserve after he had beenmissing for nearly three days.

Bird was in high spiritswhen his rescuers found himin his small car, about 29 kmfrom the entrance, on Mon-day afternoon.

Carl Bird, Keith’s son, sayshis dad was on his way to awedding on Saturday andplanned to surprise a friendwholivesintheSteenbrasNa-ture Reserve and take himalong to the wedding.

But when Carl queried thegroom about his dad the nextevening, the groom reportedthat Keith had not shown upfor the wedding.

Carl says the wedding wasa sleep-over affair and that hetherefore only expected hisdad back on Sunday after-noon.

The family immediately phoned the policeto file a missing person’s report and a massivesearch was launched in the reserve.

Wilderness Search and Rescue along withfriends, family and Keith’s fellow members ofthe Rude Motorcycle Club (MCC) jumped intoaction.

Carl says the extraordinary effort to searchevery single road in the reserve continued un-til 04:00 on Monday morning. After finding nosign of Keith, the search party regrouped earlyon Monday morning to continue the search.

A family friend even launched his plane tofly in search of Keith and family membersdrove to Grabouw and Rooi Els, with no luck.

Carl says they concluded that Keith had tobe in the reserve, because security confirmedthat he had entered the reserve and not left.He speculated that if he had been outside thereserve or even hijacked, he would have beenfound by then.

Carl says at that stage almost every road inthe reserve had been explored, except the roadthey deemed undriveable in Keith’s small se-

dan car, because even the 4x4swere struggling to get through.Neil Swanepoel (the groom atthe wedding where Keith washeaded) and Willie Morries, however, decided to venturefurtheronto thisroad,“...other-wise we would blame ourselvesfor not doing so,” explainedMorries.

As the two ventured furtherontheroadtheirhopeoffindingKeith diminished as the goingworsened. But to their surpriseand great relief, they foundKeith’s car, with him inside, al-most 9 km from the lookoutpoint where the previoussearch on this road had beenabandoned.

Morries says Keith’s car hadslipped off the road while taking on a steep hilland landed in a ditch with its wheels off theroad, whichpreventedhimfromgoingfurther. The road also did not allow the car to turnaround, as it was very narrow and borderingon steep cliffs.

Keith apparently ventured out of his car onSunday evening when he spotted some lightsbut fell in the dark and decided it was best towait in the car. Carl says his dad, a diabetic, did have his insulin with him, but could notuse it, as he had no food with him and had noteaten.

Morries says Keith did have some red winewith him for the wedding, which he rationedto last him through the ordeal.

Keith was taken to Mediclinic Vergelegenfor observation and is expected to be releasedat the end the week.

The Bird family expressed their deepest ap-preciation to all involved in the search.

ElodiBird,Keith’sdaughter-in-law,mannedthe “social media and communications” dur-ing the search and says they received supportfrom as far as Australia.

The photo of Keith Bird thatwas circulated on socialmedia sites after he wentmissing.

Neil Swanepoel and Willie Morries build alittle monument where Bird’s car had left theroad, to celebrate his return.

Skoolhartseerooronderwyser sedoodDELIAH BRINKHUIS

Die skielike dood van ’n gr. 5-onderwy-ser aan die Temperance Town PrimêreSkool het leerders en onderwysers metskok en groot hartseer gelaat.

Quwin Marthinus (25) se lyk is Dinsdagdeur polisieduikers by die Mnandi-strand,naby Mitchell’s Plain gekry.

Rehab-haarsalon, sê daar is reedsdie afgelope twee weke ’n onaange-

name reuk by die mangat by haarsalon.

Trokkewat riool uitpomp, is

week that he is not disabled but onlyacts it to get an income. He said thathe even wears DA-branded clothing, includinga jacketwith “DAno.1 sup-porter” on the back, because he be-lieves it will resonate with the aver-age motorist who passes him. This week we asked him how last

week’s article had affected his “busi-ness”.He said that he had a good week,

pocketing R3 500 – proof to him thatpeople like his “act” and are willingto pay for it. “People like me; someshake my hand.”He says the article has in no way

had a negative effect on “business”.

People can now understand that heuses themoneyhemakes to supporthis wife and young child, he be-lieves.Dyarithi says a few motorists

commented about his admissionthat he owns a Corsa bakkie.Dyarithihas twocopiesof theDis-

pointment that he has not yet hadany solid offers of an acting job, helooks forward to a bright future. Hedreams of going to Europe and Aus-tralia to “perform”his act there andearn euros.“My brother, who is also doing

the disabled act at theN2 andVicto-riaRoad intersection, will continuemy legacy here and teach others.”Dyarithi says he sees his act as

an honest way of making a living, because at the end of the act, he al-ways makes sure to walk normallyso that people can see it is an act.“It is much better than pretendingto be sick and trying to fool peoplefor real.”

Plumbing, wiringandbug inspections –you’reonyourownI wanted to sell my elderly flat inSomerset West and was told that Ineededawiring, plumbingandbee-tle certificate before the propertycould be transferred. This process had some unusual

aspects, which I think are worthsharing. The first problem was to find an

official inspector who, of course, isthe only one whomay issue a validlicence. Enquiries among otherproperty owners suggested thatthere was really only one and “weall use them”.I tried the first choice, who duly

inspected the property andpresent-ed a quote with numerous “illegal”

items, ranging from dripping tapsto lethal circuit breakers. The total for fixingall these items

wasexorbitant so I thought I shouldtryanotheroutfit,whoalsopresent-ed a quote.Curiously, the second quote was

foralmostexactlythesameamount, while their list of non-compliant ar-ticles was in somematerial aspectscompletely different to the first. This raises some questions. Why

do companies certified to do thework not agree on what is needed?Who lays down the standards for

these things? Why should a geyser, newly installed two years ago, sud-denly be deemed illegal?

I decided tomake some enquiriesabout the system and the matter ofsupervising these companies.Officials at the Somerset West

municipality rather regretfully in-formedmethattherewasnocontrolover what they did, apart from therather theoretical licensing powerof the labour department. The municipal monitoring func-

tionhadbeen removed in 1992, theysaid.“You’re on your own,” they said.I was running out of time and

money, so I just bit the bullet andgave the first outfit the go-ahead.

With regard to the “disabled” beggar attheVictoriaRoadandN2intersection (“‘Icreated my own job’, says ‘disabled’ beg-gar”, DistrictMail, 19 February):I am upset because this man is jeopar-

ROAD USEREMAIL

This shouldbethe last strawNews of a plannedmeeting of autho-rities tasked with maintaining safe-ty and security along the notoriousHell Run zone will be welcomed bymotorists and other road users. This meeting of stakeholders is

long overdue. The past two months have seen

DistrictMail report on two horrificattacksontheroadnetworkbetweenthe Helderberg Basin and CapeTown.Last month, Macassar resident

Julius Jantjies was admitted to theICU after he sustained severe headtrauma when the vehicle he wastravelling in was stoned in broaddaylight. The attack on International Rug-

byBoardrefereeShaunVeldsmanatthe Baden Powell turn-off at 21:00 onSaturday should be the last straw. Both victims are in a stable condi-

tion, but fears of falling prey to thenext attack torment many a motor-ist.It is time for authorities to set

their differences aside. They need toforget about the politics and the bu-reaucracy of which stakeholder is –on paper – responsible for policingwhich part of the road.Thesafetyofpeople ismoreimpor-

tant than the pointing of fingers atother stakeholders.A workable solution is needed to

ensure road users’ safety. It’s timeto knuckle down, put heads togetherand start solving this ongoing prob-lem.

Traffic snarl-ups in Somerset West and Strand are raising the ire of locals, who are begging to know why traffic officers are not more con-sistently deployed to troublesome intersections. DistrictMail has posed this question to the City of Cape Town and will be reporting on thematter in next week’s edition.

INSPIRATION: LOCAL LIVES BEYOND HIS LIMITS

Donovan looks to thebright sideMARK STUART

When Donovan Tose was 11 years old, hesuddenly found himself struggling to readthe tagson theChristmaspresents.Hereal-ised something was seriously wrong withhis eyesight.

He tried to hide this from his family, but afamily member saw him trying to read the TVguide while holding it centi-metres from his eyes.An opthalmologist in Cape

Town diagnosed Donovanwith Leber’s hereditary opticneuropathy (LHON).In layman’s terms, the 33-

year-oldexplains, thisisanin-flammationof theopticnerve,whichrestrictsthebloodflow-ing through it.“My central vision is very

blurred, butmyperipheral vi-sionisbetter– it’s like lookingthrough a kaleidoscope, with10% vision,” he says.“Before I contracted thedis-

ease, I played provincial base-

ball and squash, and enjoyed reading, so it wasdifficult to realise I could no longer do any ofthese things. But I continued surfing with mydad, playing roller hockey and rugby.”Schoolwork was a challenge, but his friends

read the work to him, while his mom recordedbooks on tapes.Teachers at Beaumont Primarywere helpful

and supportive, especially his class teacherGordon Reddell – now the school’s principal.

“Les Kets was my rugbycoach and also very good tome. We played rugby inbrown and yellow jerseys, and I remember playingagainst Somerset House – inbottle green and yellow jer-seys – on a wet and muddyfield,” Donovan recalls.“Asaresultof themud, bits

of yellow in both teams’ jer-seys and my poor eyesight, Itackled someofmyownplay-ers – it was very funny.”Despite his poor vision, he

completed primary school atBeaumont, passing with fly-ing colours. He attended Pio-

neer High inWorcester, a predomi-nantlyAfrikaansschoolforvisuallyimpaired and blind students, as aboarder, which he found difficult. But he adjusted well and passed

high school with distinctions, waselected to the student council andachieved Boland colours for athlet-ics.“IheldtheSArecordfor the100m

sprintandrepresented theSAphys-ically handicapped team at the AllAfrica Games, where I did quite well. The SAteamwantedme to attend theParalympics, butI decided not to, to concentrate on my music.”Donovan’s face lights upwhen he starts talk-

ing about his music – his passion in life.He started playing drums at the age of 13 and

switched to bass guitar after taking lessonswhen he was 16 from Somerset West musicteacher Ray Holroyd.Athighschoolhe startedabandcalledFudge

withtwootherboys–oneblindandonevisuallyimpaired – playing new metal music at a localWorcester venue. The band released two albums and some of

their songs were played on 5FM and CampusRadio. After school he stayed on in Worcester

to study business entrepreneurship and mar-keting.“But the real reason I stayedwas to playmu-

sic in the band.”Donovanwas soonemployedat 1stGraphics,

which became Antilas four years later. Whilehereheboughtacarandemployedhisowndriv-er. He recently joined Ricoh, selling high vol-ume digital presses.During this period he started playing music

with drummer Stef Nortje, whose band mem-bers had left for London.Oncetheyreturned,Donovanjoinedtheband

Deaf Division. In 2004, the band renamed themselves Mind

Assaultandhavebeengoingstrongsince,head-lining at the RamFest in Johannesburg andWorcester for a number of years, aswell as Op-pikoppie. They have toured nationally and re-leased three albums.“Thehighlight ofmymusic careerwaswhen

wewere thesupportingact forAmericanheavymetal band Lamb of God during their tour ofSouth Africa last year,” Donovan says.“Wemet them, whichwas very cool and they

watched us play. They said they enjoyed ourmusic.”Donovanuseshis iPhone to sendSMSes, sees

what’s new on Facebook and sends emails byusing accessibility software that reads backmessages. He says everyday things such as not having

his independenceorrecognisingpeopleremaina constant struggle. However,Donovan, often the lifeof theparty,

lives a full and busy life, and does not let hisdisability get him down. He enjoys sailing, so-cialising, good food, wine, music and body-weight training. He has completed a seven-daykayak trip inGreece, been to internationalmu-sic festivals, and MCs social events.“Dealing with my disability, I realised there

is always someone worse off than me. A quotewhich has helped me cope is: ‘I complainedaboutmyshoesuntil Imetamanwithno legs’.”

Transformingyourkitchen intoa chic environmentHavinganewkitchen in-stalled as part of yourhomerenovationprojectcanbeoneof themost re-warding experiences forany homeowner.

The look and feel of yourkitchen sets the tone or en-hances the overall designand character of yourhome.

Thekitchenis, therefore, the essential starting pointwhen considering a com-plete interior overhaul.

Withtheextensiverangeandvarietyofproductsanddesigns available on themarket, kitchen remodel-ling is becoming increasingly popu-lar, and more affordable.

“New kitchen installations cur-rentlycomprisesome40%ofourbusi-ness,” says Carol Theron, generalmanager at The Kitchen & CupboardFactory.

“With today’s economic pressures, more and more homeowners opt forhome renovations to maximise thevalue of their properties. Even theslightest change to the current layoutand look and feel of your kitchen canadd greater functionality, and a freshand sleek new dimension to your liv-ing space,” she says.

Budget remains themost importantconsideration when planning a newkitchen. “If we have a clear under-standing of clients’ space require-mentsandbudgetconstraintsfromtheonset, it is much easier to optimiseboth. Moreover, we eliminate timewasted on proposed designs and solu-tions that are out of sync with our cli-ents’ needs,” Theron says.

“With the myriad of kitchen designsolutions and products on themarket,it is possible to create a dreamkitchento suit any space and any budget.”

You can achieve the look you wantbycombiningmoreaffordablekitchen

designs and finish with atop-endworksurfaces, suchas engineered stone. Or optfor amore expensive finish, but with cheaper work sur-faces and standard fittings.

If yourbudget doesnot al-low for a complete overhaulinonego, planyourkitchenremodelling project in sta-ges.

Theron cautions againstoneof themostcommonpit-falls when planning yournew kitchen. “It is rarelypossible to create a stylishnew look for your kitchenby only replacing existingdoors and handles,” shesays.

Your “new” kitchenwill be left withall theexistingexposedsides, cornices, light shields andkicker plates – designelements that need towork together tocreate a sleek new look.

This isalsoperceivedtobeacheaperalternative than having the entirekitchen replaced. “Kitchen doors areoften themost expensive component –make sure that it is money well spentand don’t skimp on smaller yet essen-tial parts of your project.”

Having the heart of your hometugged out and replaced can causema-jor disruption, but if the project iswellplanned and executed, the chaos can

be turned into a rewardingproject.

The key to the success of yourproject is having the right part-ner to guide you through the en-tire renovation process. “Theteam at the Kitchen & CupboardFactory ensures that our clients

are fully informed on all the compo-nentsthatconstituteakitchenmake-over,” Theron says.

“It is important to bear in mindthat your project will require inputand assistance from other contrac-tors to take care of plumbing, elec-tricity, painting and tiling.”

With the proper consultations, you can transform yourkitchen into a chic and elegant space.

RubbleneednotbeaheavyburdenMARK STUART

Howmany timeshaveyou seenahugepileof building rubble laying on someone'spavement or in their garden for monthson end?

This is often as a result of property ownersnot confirmingwith their builder that hewillremove the rubble from the premises aftercompletion of the job. There could also be the scenario that the

builder promises to come and collect the rub-ble, but never arrives to do so.Endless telephone calls to the builder re-

main unanswered and the property ownermust then makes plans to have the rubble re-moved at his/her own expense. Some property owners believe that moving

the rubble themselves is cheaper than askingthe builder to do so.This is also because property owners be-

lieve that asking the builder to remove therubble is an unnecessary expense on an al-ready expensive building project. However, speaking from personal experi-

ence, removing one’s own building rubblewitha small bakkie isnotnecessarily cheaperand definitely not easy.I completely underestimated the size of the

load – what I thought would be two or threequick trips to the dump, turned out to be sixfully loaded trips to the dump and back – a25km round trip.I later estimated that the cost of additional

labour, petrolandwearandtearonmyvehiclewas just not worth it.So the bottom line is to ask the builder to

include the removal of rubble in his price –it just makes life so much easier.

Discover cement’s versatilityLongthoughtofascoldandimpersonalbydec-orators, new trends in cement are now show-ing the product’s versatility.Concrete floors have long been sought after

with your new cement floors:Merging materialsThis trendbrings togetherdifferentnatural

materials such as exposed brick and wood

with cement. The textures blend together andcreate a design storywhichwill have a longerdécor lifetime. Current décor “fads” can beadded or removed, depending on the season.Tactile textureThis is away to create an interesting visual

space as concrete is tactile and can beskimmedon,off-shutteredorgivenabagwasheffect. Cement surfaces do not have “flat” col-ours because of the way they dry and are ab-sorbed at various rates into a surface. Thesetextural elements of concrete make it physi-callyandvisually interesting– whocanresistrunning their fingers down a textured wall?Colour storiesMaking use of natural materials and tex-

then, tohaveanextend-ed set of opportunitieswhen it comes to decid-ing where to invest?Well, such opportuni-ties are available now.Today, many fund

managers in South Af-rica are finding thebulk of attractive in-vestment opportuni-ties offshore. The nega-tive headlines world-wide (the financialcrisis, recessions, fiscal

cliff and troubles in Europe), haveall ledtosomeveryattractiveoppor-tunities in the out-of-favour regionsof theworld. Theprices of top-quali-ty global companies arenow inbuy-ing territory when compared totheir emerging market peers. Thisrepresents great long-termopportu-nities for investors. There are over 2 800 companies

listed on the New York Stock Ex-change,morethan2 400listedontheLondon Stock Exchange and about

5 000 companies listed on the Bom-bay Stock Exchange. More than 600companies are listed in Brazil andover 1 900 in South Korea. The listgoes on and on.These stock exchanges trade

Shoprite and Tesco, one of theworld’s largest retailers.Although Shoprite may be an ex-

cellent company locally, ask your-self the question, where would yourather invest your hard earnedmoney?Keep inmind that the SouthAfri-

can economy comprises only 0.7%ofthatoftherestoftheworld.Makesyou think, doesn’t it?Everyone can invest theirmoney

offshore,safelyandcheaply,nomat-ter how small the amount is.Make sure today that yourportfo-

lio has enough offshore exposure.

At present there are about 438companies listed on the JSE, ourlocal stock exchange, in whichyou can choose to in-vest.

Someof these compa-niesaretheelderstates-men like Anglo Ameri-can and British Ameri-can Tobacco. Othersare companies that aresignificant players glo-ballyintheirrespectiveindustries, like SABMiller, Richemont andMTN. There are alsocompanies like Nas-pers, Shoprite, Sasoland Standard Bank, which can be found inmanydomesticportfoliosbelongingto individuals and unit trusts alike. For a long time it has been possibletoinvestinthesecompaniesquicklyand cheaply through a number ofhighlyregardedstockbrokers, orbyinvesting in a significant range ofwell-managed and regulated unittrusts that give collective access toa portfolio of these companies bypooling investors’ contributions. There will be times when shares
