1.0 THE GRANULAR BACKFILL MATERIAL IN THE ENGINEERED BACKFILL ZONE SHALL BE PLACED UNIFORMLY ONBOTH SIDES OF THE STRUCTURE SIMULTANEOUSLY, IN LAYERS OF 200mm IN DEPTH (BEFORE COMPACTION)AND COMPACTED TO A MINIMUM 95% STANDARD PROCTOR DRY DENSITY (ASTM D698). THE DIFFERENCE INLEVELS OF THE BACKFILL ON THE TWO SIDES AT ANY TRANSVERSE SECTION SHALL NOT EXCEED 400mm.

2.0 HEAVY VIBRATORY COMPACTION EQUIPMENT SHALL NOT BE ALLOWED WITHIN 1000mm OF THE STRUCTUREWALL OR CLOSE ENOUGH TO CAUSE DISTORTION. AREAS CLOSEST TO THE STRUCTURE SHALL BECOMPACTED USING VIBRATORY OR TAMPING EQUIPMENT RUNNING PARALLEL WITH THE LENGTH OF THESTRUCTURE AT ALL TIMES. SEE NOTE 5.0 BELOW FOR COMPACTING OVER THE TOP OF THE STRUCTURE.

3.0 AT NO TIME SHALL THE BACKFILL MATERIAL BE DUMPED NEXT TO THE STRUCTURE WALL SO AS TO CHANGETHE SHAPE OR ALIGNMENT. MATERIAL IS NOT TO BE DUMPED ON TOP OF THE STRUCTURE AT ANY TIME.TRUCKS CAN UNLOAD IN ROUGH LAYERS STARTING NO CLOSER THAN 1500mm FROM THE SIDE WALLS.HEAVY EQUIPMENT SHALL ALSO VEER AWAY FROM THE ENDS OF THE STRUCTURE BARREL.

4.0 THE STRUCTURE SHALL BE CHECKED PERIODICALLY DURING THE BACKFILLING PROCEDURE TO ENSURE THESHAPE IS CONSISTENT WITH THE MANUFACTURER'S TOLERANCES.

5.0 PLACE AND COMPACT THE BACKFILL OVER THE TOP OF THE STRUCTURE (ABOVE 3/4 OF THE RISE) USINGLIGHT EQUIPMENT PERPENDICULAR TO THE LONGITUDINAL AXIS OF THE STRUCTURE. THE MINIMUM REQUIREDCOVER OVER THE STRUCTURE WILL BE DETERMINED BY THE ENGINEER FOR EACH PIECE OF EQUIPMENT. NOEQUIPMENT SHALL BE ALLOWED OVER THE STRUCTURE THAT WOULD EXCEED THE DESIGN LIVE LOAD AT THEFINAL MINIMUM DESIGN HEIGHT OF COVER.

6.0 THE OWNER OR OWNER'S DELEGATE WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR CONDUCTING COMPACTION TESTING TOENSURE COMPLIANCE WITH THE DESIGN AND SPECIFICATIONS.

BACKFILL PROCEDURE

ENGINEERED BACKFILL MATERIAL1.0 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

1.1 THE SOIL SHALL SATISFY STRENGTH AND COMPRESSIBILITY CRITERIA USED IN THE DESIGN OF THESOIL-METAL STRUCTURE AND SHALL NOT BE ADVERSELY AFFECTED AFTER PLACEMENT BY WETTING,DRYING, SATURATION, FREEZING, THAWING, VIBRATIONS OR BY FLOWING WATER.

2.0 SOIL GRADATION REQUIREMENTS2.1 MAXIMUM PARTICLE SIZE

THE LARGEST PARTICLE SIZE OF THE SOIL USED WITHIN THE ENGINEERED BACKFILL ZONE SHALL NOT BEGREATER THAN 76mm.

2.2 FINES CONTENTTHE FINES CONTENT SHALL NOT EXCEED 10% FOR THE SOIL PLACED WITHIN THE ENGINEERED BACKFILLZONE.

2.3 GRADATION CHARACTERISTICSTHE GRADATION OF THE SOIL WITHIN THE ENGINEERED BACKFILL ZONE SHALL SATISFY:

Cu > 10, OR Cmu > 7 AND 1 < Cc < 3WHERE Cu = D60/D10

Cmu = D70/D20Cc = (D30)2 /(D10 x D60)

2.4 PLASTICITYTHE PLASTICITY OF THE SOIL USED WITHIN THE ENGINEERED BACKFILL ZONE SHALL SATISFY LL < 20 ANDPI < 5%.

2.5 PARTICLE ANGULARITYPARTICLE ANGULARITY SHALL BE DETERMINED ON MATERIAL LARGER THAN 25mm BY VISUALEXAMINATION. THE SOIL FRACTION LARGER THAN 25mm IN SIZE THAT IS PLACED WITHIN THE ENGINEEREDBACKFILL ZONE SHALL CONTAIN A MINIMUM 35% BY WEIGHT OF ANGULAR OR SUB ANGULAR PARTICLES.

2.6 PARTICLE ELONGATION AND FLATNESSPARTICLE ELONGATION AND FLATNESS SHALL BE DETERMINED ON MATERIAL LARGER THAN 5mm BYVISUAL EXAMINATION. FLAT OR ELONGATED PARTICLES LARGER THAN 5mm IN LEAST DIMENSION SHALLNOT EXCEED 25% BY WEIGHT OF THE SOIL USED IN THE ENGINEERED BACKFILL ZONE.

2.7 PARTICLE DURABILITYNOT MORE THAN 10% OF THE 25mm OR LARGER FRACTION OF THE SOIL TO BE USED WITHIN THEENGINEERED BACKFILL ZONE SHALL HAVE A SLAKE DURABILITY INDEX, Id, LESS THAN 95% AFTER ONECYCLE OR 90% AFTER TWO CYCLES.

3.0 DELETERIOUS MATERIALS3.1 HUMIC ORGANIC MATTER IN EXCESS OF 0.5% (DRY WEIGHT BASIS) AND SHALES AND CLAYSTONES ARE

CONSIDERED DELETERIOUS MATERIALS AND SHALL NOT BE ALLOWED FOR USE IN THE ENGINEEREDBACKFILL ZONE.

3.2 FROZEN MATERIAL SHALL NOT BE ALLOWED FOR USE IN THE ENGINEERED BACKFILL ZONE.4.0 QUALITY ASSURANCE

4.1 QUALITY CONTROL STATISTICAL PROCEDURES AND OR GUIDELINES PROVIDED BY THE PROJECT OWNER ORAUTHORIZED REPRESENTATIVE SHALL BE ADOPTED IN RESPECT OF SOIL SAMPLING, LABORATORY AND INSITU TESTING, AND CRITERIA FOR ACCEPTANCE OF THE SOIL COMPONENT OF THE SOIL-METAL STRUCTURE.
