Haar man het vinnig besef daar is groot fout toe hy haar hoor gil.

A suspected law enforce-ment officer spun her pri-vate vehicle on Sunday aft-ernoon in Macassar so outof control, that it wentthrough one property’sgate, hit a man standingthere, and then brokethrough a vibracrete wallinto the next property be-fore spinning its way out ofthat property’s gate andback into the street again.

avoid colliding with this car – and
that’s when she started her journeyinto the neighbouring properties.Brandt’s daughter, Kathy Boer,

SLP river ‘not safe’for swimmingDALEEN FOUCHÉ
The Sir Lowry’s Pass River is not safefor swimming due to the high level offaecal coliforms (e-coli) and other pol-lutants in the river.
Local ward councillor, Johan Middle-ton, warned this week that childrenshould not be swimming in the river, be-cause some residents of the Sir Lowry’sPass informal settlement empty their por-table flush toilets (PFT) into the river.
PFTs consist of a small portable seatingstructure and two removable bowls. These are cleaned three times a week bythe City of Cape Town.
A recent test of the Sir Lowry’s Pass Ri-ver’s water quality, taken by a SomersetWestresident, revealedahighe-coli countin this river.
The City of Cape Town, however, wouldnot comment on test results, because thetest was not conducted by the City.
Five water samples were taken fromvariousplaces intheSirLowry’sPassRiv-er by Stephen Leppan, a local activist, inSeptember and sent to South African Bu-reau of Standards (SABS). He says he hadthe water samples tested because he sawhow people emptied their PFT pots intothe river.
Leppan added that when he confrontedthe people, they said that they do not haveenough PFTs and they fill up before theCity can collect and clean them.
The results show that the e-coli countat the Sir Lowry’s Pass Informal Settle-ment was 1 250 e-coli per 100 mF.
The accepted level for water that peoplehave “intermediate contact” with, exclu-
ding swimming, is 1 000 e-coli per 100 mF.Benedicta van Minnen, mayoral com-
mittee member for Health in the City ofCape Town, says she cannot comment onthe test results as these were not analysedin the City’s laboratory and it is unclearhow the samples were taken, stored andtransported. She says it is also not clearwhether the samples were analysed with-in the specified six hours from the timethey were collected.
Van Minnen says a single sample doesnotprovideadequate information todrawspecificconclusionsfromandtheprotocolfor testingwaterrequiresseveral samplesovera threemonthperiod tobecompared.
She says the City of Cape Town has allits tests done at its own laboratory.
Middleton says thepeopleusing the riv-er to empty their PFTs is a big problemwhich the City of Cape Town has ad-dressed repeatedly through educationcampaigns. He says in addition to thePFTs, residents also have access to sever-al flush toilets positioned across the in-formal settlement.
Van Minnen, however, says additionalfull flush toilets will be installed in vari-ous informal settlements such as Wag ’nBietjie and Beverly Hills in Sir Lowry’sPass this year.
“In addition, City Health in the past fi-nancial year and up until now held tenhealth interventions at Rasta Camp,crèches in the surrounding area and theprimary school, focusing on diarrhoeaprevention, personalhygiene, greywater, and illegal dumping.”
Middleton says the river is also danger-ous to children due to bottles and otherrubbish being dumped in the river.

Response from the City ofCape Town:
On 6 and 7 November one of theCity’s service providers did pressuretests in Gordon’s Bay and had toturn the water supply off. This wasa planned interruption and resi-dents were informed of it via the lo-cal media. Areas fed by the Moun-tainside and Mariners Way pres-sure reduction valves were affected.
On 8 November the Strand WaterDepot received numerous calls fromresidents in Gordon’s Bay regard-ing low water pressure. On investi-gation it was found that two valveson the corner of Lemoenboom Roadand Lancaster Road, Gordon’s Bay,had been vandalised. The valves
were both in a partially closed posi-tion, and the heads of the valves hadbeen broken off. Repairs were effect-ed and water supply was restored by9 November at about 14:00.
Supply was again interrupted on14 November at about 08:00 due toadamagedwaterpipe.Watersupplywas restored at 14:00 on the sameday.
Water supply to Gordon’s Bay iscurrently operating as normal.Should further interruptions occur, residentsshouldpleasereport this totheCity’sCallCentreon0860103089,via SMS to 31373 or via e-mail to [email protected].
The City apologises for the incon-venience caused, and would like toagain appeal to residents to reportincidents of vandalism, which costthe City and the ratepayer largeamounts of time and money eachyear.
Rates increasesnotonmunicipal database
With reference to the DistrictMail’s re-cent notice on rates increases and nothaving received any postage from themunicipality (not necessarily a sign ofa rates increase), I went to the Strandmunicipal offices and was assisted byaverycompetentandefficientyoung la-dy in searching the two large files con-taining the citywide rates increases.Time spent, 30 minutes. Conclusion:
whoever managed/programmed thecompilation and way the files were puttogether did it in themost time efficientway. Problem being, they did not con-sider themost efficient way for staff us-ing the printed information, resultingin the thousands of wasted man hoursbymunicipal staff across thepeninsula.Poor indexing of reference numbersand names, giving the impression thatit had been “thrown together”.The information was not available in
the municipal database.CHRIS

Applying these tips could ensure a safer seasonWith the holiday season rapidly approach-ing, the South African Police Services haswarned the public to be extra careful andaware of their safety and security aroundthe home as this is also the time of the yearwhen robberies and burglaries occur morefrequently. The following are just some of the safety
tips highlighted on the SAPS websitewww.saps.gov.za.
) Security gates with sturdy locks infront of each outer door as well as burglarproofing covering all windows, are recom-mended.
) The following devices also preventeasy access and are advised: window bars, security doors, security gates and razorwire.
) Additional locking devices on doors aswell as the strengthening of doors, peepho-les in doors, safety chains to doors as wellas an intercom system between the homeandgate, frontdoororgaragearealsoagoodidea.
) Alarm, systems such as those connect-ed to an armed response company are rec-ommended. These should include an alarmon the roof that can be heard over a longdistance and activated by a panic button inthe house.
) Panic buttons in different rooms of thehouse should also be installed and an alarmshould also be able to warn occupants of anintrusion in the house.
) Security lights on the outside of thehouse also help improve the physical pro-tection of a house. These lights must be di-
rected away from the house and allow occu-pants to use the windows without being ob-served from outside.
) Doors should be locked and windowsclosed when you are not at home.
) Large dogs serve as a deterrent so trainat leastoneof themtosleep inside thehouse.
) Ensure that tools such as axes, spades, picks, ladders, etc. that can be used to breakin or used in an attack, are locked awaywhen you do not use them.

Vergelegen Mediclinic, Somerset West
One Year Later
thOn Saturday the 15 , we commemorated the first anniversary
of the devastating flood that brought our practice to its knees in
November 2013.
During that particular night the Lourens River broke its banks
and it resulted in our SomersetWest practice being completely
destroyed.
We lost all our imaging equipment, computers, cabling,
server, dedicated software and telephone system.
One year later we are proud to announce that we have
succeeded in re-building our practice fromscratch.
All our imaging equipment had to be replaced in the process
and we are now again offering a state of the art service to the
community.
We are grateful to our patients, referring doctors and Medi
Clinic for their understanding and support during this difficult
period and we would like to make special mention of our staff
because none of thiswould have been possiblewithout them.
In the immediate aftermath they were not discouraged by the
massive disruption, but reported promptly for duty and jumped in
and assistedwhere they couldwhether it was cleaning up, sorting
ormaking inventories.
The staff, regardless of their job titles, offered to do paperwork for
weeks on end at different locations and many of them worked
long hours especially at other practices e.g. Stellenbosch.
This enabled us to continue with rendering a service to our

Vir sus sal enige popwerk, veralasdit ’nDocMcStuffins pop is. As jyvir ouboet vra is dit ietstussen wat-ook-al enenigiets.

Attitude is vital component in cricketThe beauty about cricket is that any team canbeat any other team on any given day.
This is actually evident in all sport, but ifyou don’t pitch up mentally and physically onthe day, you will be beaten.
Take the Proteas for example. They had agreat win against the Aussies in their firstT20 and then lost the next two matches. I’mnot saying they didn’t pitch up for the remain-ing games, but it’s conceivable that compla-cency crept in after their first win.
I tell my players that there is no easy game. Each game is as difficult as the next. As soonas you drop your guard and lower your inten-sity the more chance you have to lose. Alwaysrespect the opposition and respect the game.
It’s very important to have a positive atti-tude in cricket. When facing fast bowling inparticular, attitude is very important. Stand-
ing your ground and “manning up” will goa long way to achieving success. We have seenmany players over the years not fulfillingtheirpotentialdueto lackof therightattitude.Having never say die and the team comes firstattitudes are the one to have. Cricket has aknack of bringing those who don’t respect thegame down to earth with a thump.
The World Cup is around the corner andSouth Africa will once again be under the spotlight. The Proteas will have tobe switched on for every ballof every game if they want towin and there is no reasonwhy they can’t.
