rugged course, these students showed tremendous determination to
complete the run while being positive and determined representatives of our
school and community. Special congratulations to Bayley (2nd place 10 years

Principal’s Column This Week’s Whale Awards and Class Academic Awards
Hello, Giinagay, Hai,
This week is NAPLAN for our Year 3 and Year 5 students. The
following message to students was read out yesterday in
preparation for NAPLAN starting today.
“To Our Dearest Students from Year 3 and Year 5, this week
you will sit your NAPLAN test.
Before you take this test there is something very important
for you to know. This test does not assess all of what makes
each of you exceptional and unique.
The people who score these tests don’t know that some of
you love to sing, are good at drawing or can teach others how
to use a computer program. They have not seen the way that
some of you can dance with grace or speak confidently to a
large group. They do not know that your friends count on you
to be there for them when they are sad. They do not know
that you participate in sports, help your mum and dad or that
you play with your little sister or brother or your cousins. They
do not know that you are caring, thoughtful and that every
day you try your best.
These attributes cannot be tested. The scores you get from
this test will tell you how you did on that day but they will not
tell you everything. They can’t tell you that you have improved
on something that you once may have found difficult. They
can’t tell you that you brighten up your teacher’s day. They
can’t tell you how amazingly special you are.
So come to school, ready to do your best for the NAPLAN test
and remember that there is no way to ‘test’ all of the
wonderful things that make you, YOU!”
District Cross Country
Last Friday, our students travelled to Bowraville for the
District Cross Country.
We were well represented by a wonderfully behaved group
that did our school proud. Congratulations to all the students
who represented our school with so much enthusiasm.
Thanks to all the parents for transporting our students.
Thanks to Ritchie and Pak Chris for supporting our students
on the day.
Visible Learning
Visible Learning Plus is based on one simple belief: every
student should experience at least one year’s growth
over the course of one school year.
Our dedicated teachers came in on Saturday with other
local schools to begin their Visible Learning Plus
Professional Development Programme. It provides an in-
depth review and change model for schools based on
John Hattie's research. With a seminar and support
series the Visible Learning Plus team helps schools to
find out about the impact they are having on student
achievement. This day will substitute for one of the staff
development days at the end of year.
Visible Learning Plus is unique because it not only gives
teachers evidence to prove that what we are doing is
effective, it provides the data-gathering techniques we
need to continuously measure our impact on student
learning and use evidence to inform the next
professional learning steps.
Thank you to our P&C for the wonderful cupcakes they
made for Mother’s Day, they were absolutely beautiful!
Thanks, yaarri yaraang, terima kasih.

Year 6 Transition to High School
Last week the Year 6’s went up to Macksville High School for our first transition day. We participated in a variety of
different activities including science with Ms Conway, maths with Ms Campion and sport with Mr Parker.
In science, we did three different activities with Ms Conway. The first one was chemistry. We mixed some different
chemicals together, then wrote down the results. Next we did biology. There were lots of different frozen bugs. We chose
two different ones then wrote the similarities and differences. The last activity was physics. We used a pendulum to
record how much time it took to swing the different lengths, than we recorded the results.
In maths we came up with some ideas for our Year 6 farewell. We had a budget that we couldn’t go over. We had to
organise the budget of food, entertainment and the theme. We got into teams of 4 to complete the activity. Throughout
the whole transition, we had to work with all the other Year 6’s which helped us make new friends.
In sport, we played three different games. The first one was soccer, then oz-tag, and the last one was a new game that
crossed netball with basketball. (I’ve forgotten the name of that one). We all had some time to see the other high school
students and play with them as well. We all had a good time and learnt some new things together.
We can’t wait until the next one.
By Isaac.
