Membership, Membership, Membership Most members of Toastmasters joined a club because someone invited them to a meeting. Challenge your club to participate in the Smedley Award membership building contest, August 1-September 30. In honor of Ralph Smedley, can your club add five new, dual, or reinstated members between August 1 and September 30? By doing so you’ll qualify to receive a "Smedley Award" ribbon to display on your club’s banner. In addition to the ribbon, qualifying clubs earn a special discount code for 10-percent off their next club order. (The discount code expires six months from the date of issue and is not valid with any other offer.)

Lt. Governor Education and Training Report – August 2014

Division and Area Governors Training All Division Governors and most Area Governors have completed training in preparation to perform their duties this year.  The current completion rate for training is 93%, much higher than the 85% required for the District to qualify for the Distinguished District Program and we are still working on getting 100%.  More important for our members, it demonstrates the attitude of our governors to accept the challenge of leadership with dedication and conviction.

Club Officer Training Be sure to review the revised District Training Standards.  There have been four TLIs conducted this year and two more, both on August 16, 2014, are scheduled.  A number of COTs have also been conducted.  All of these District sponsored training sessions were and will be posted on the District Calendar for maximum opportunities to attend.  Many clubs have already had the minimum four officers trained needed this training period for the Distinguished Club Program.  Some clubs have had all seven officers trained and will receive the District incentive of a $10 gift certificate along with our sincere and well deserved congratulations.

Revised Club Education and Conference Attendance Incentives The club incentives have been revised for the year.  Most of the incentives are the same as last year, some with minor adjustments.  Any changes to last year’s qualifications will increase the chances for clubs to obtain the incentive goal.  Of note is a new incentive that has been added for Legacy Clubs.  Legacy Clubs are clubs that have earned distinguished status for the last three or more years in a row.  These clubs are special and will be rewarded at the end of this year with a $10 gift certificate.

Fall Conference Presentation Applications Be a presenter at the Fall Conference.  The Request for Presenters has been posted on the District Website for just over a week.  This year we will increase the number of education sessions offered.  We have already received half a dozen applications or intentions to apply.  These sessions will be clearly defined to ensure your attendance will be of value to you and help you reach your personal goals.  Attendees will have more choices and can sample sessions from different areas of interest or devote all their time to a specific track or personal interest.

District 39 • Where Leaders Are Made

Lt. Governor Education and Training Report – August 2014

This year is the 90th anniversary of Toastmasters.  We will celebrate by getting back to tradition with a return to topics addressing the three specific areas of club success, self‐development and leadership.  It will require several presenters in each of the three topic areas.  We welcome presentations from the Toastmasters series of modules, including Evaluate to Motivate, Moments of Truth, Mentoring and Finding New Members for Your Club.  Now would be an excellent opportunity to complete that Success Leadership or Success Communication Program required for your DTM.  If you have a passion for a particular subject and wish to be a presenter, go online to obtain, complete and submit an application to present.

Judges/Contest Training The reviews of the new Judges/Contestant Training indicate the program is going well.  There are still a few more of these special trainings being offered before the Area contest season.  This program puts everyone on the “same page”.  If you plan to judge you will want to attend to see what the consensus is among judges as to what makes a winning speech, what are detractors, common myths and actual contest rules.  If you are competing you will want to know the same information.  It will give you an edge in the competition if you know what the judges think is important.  It will give you more confidence and help you give a better speech.

Club Success Plans Has your club completed its Club Success Plan?  Here are three reasons to do so.

1. Toastmasters are fond of the old saying “If you don’t know where you are going, any road will get you there.”  Unless you start with a plan now, how will you measure success at the end of the year?  The Club Success Plan is a great way to start the year with direction and purpose.  It makes your club more efficient and helps put effort toward relevant issues.

2. One of the requirements to earn an Advanced Leader Bronze Education Award is that you must participate in developing the Club Success Plan while a club officer.  Make sure the Secretary documents the date of the meeting because you will need to provide the date when you submit your award application.  It may be years before you apply so documentation is crucial.

3. Creating a Plan now will help determine who will be able to help the club complete the 1‐3‐5‐9 DCP Goals by October 31st to receive the District incentive.  Unless there is commitment from your members, your club is unlikely to achieve these goals.

As Reggie Leach said, “Success is not the result of spontaneous combustion.  You must set yourself on fire.”

District Governor Brian Hatano, DTM August 2014 Contact: [email protected]

Y ou’ve probably heard the term "change manage-ment"---a term for the process of implementing

change in an organization. Sometimes, an organization that undergoes drastic changes in its methodology stum-bles for a while because its employees aren't used to this new way. Or they resist the change.

But life, we know, is full of changes. Every day we are managers of those changes. How we learn to deal with them and make adjust-ments makes the dif-ference in our outlook. It's a necessity to deal with change effectively and not treat every change we encounter automatically as a negative just because it goes against what we’re used to.

The year holds a lot of changes for Toastmasters Interna-tional that we as members of the organization will be di-rectly affected. For instance, at the conclusion of this year, titles will change for the district leaders (see box below; to learn more about the new titles, go to http://www.toastmasters.org/districttitles).

New Toastmasters officer titles starting in 2015-16

Current Title New Title 2015-16

District Governor District Director, District 39

Lt. Governor Education and Training Program Quality Director, District 39

Lt. Governor Marketing Club Growth Director, District 39

Secretary Administration Manager

Treasurer Finance Manager

Public Relations Officer Public Relations Manager

Sergeant at Arms Logistics Manager

Division Governor Division Director

Area Governor Area Director

Life is change. Growth is optional.

Choose wisely. —Karen Kaiser Clark

As pointed out by a PDG, my small place in history is the distinction of being the last District Governor and last Past District Governor of District 39, since DG title changes.

Also upcoming is the Revitalized Education program that will launch this year. It is a product of many hours of de-velopment by TI before even a sneak preview was re-vealed to district leaders. We are now all privileged to be a part of this exciting chapter of Toastmasters that will shape the organization for years to come.

Rather than reject this change, I encourage all of you to try to embrace the change. One reason is because it is the new reality. Much like the rebranding of 2011, this change will take some new thinking, and in some cases, won’t be wholly integrated quickly. But be confident that Toastmasters has a strategy of training and support to help us understand the new program.

Toastmasters International chose one person in each district to lead this change management. In District 39, we are honored to have Tracy Fletcher-Bowman, DTM, from Babble On Toastmasters, as our Chief Ambassador. She has a team of 17 ambassadors that will meet with clubs to explain the new program. You will learn much more in the near future as Tracy and her team learns and shares the program throughout the district.

We’re all here to help you manage the changes.

New and Improved Toastmasters Program Coming

Thanks to D39 Leaders Division and Area Governors, along

with District leadership, have stepped up to get this year started.

Special thanks to District TLI Coordi-nator Laura Frank, TLI Coordinators Zack Souza (Sacramento) and Russ Steele (Reno) for directing the first two TLI sessions this year.

Also, much appreciation to District Treasurer Myra Golson for her skillful managing of our financial records; to Immediate Past District Governor Joey Waldrop, for her support and mentoring area governors; and, to my wife, Cindy, for helping me this (and every) year.

Assign Your Club Proxy

Toastmasters clubs hold the most important voting power in the organization. This month, club presidents and secretaries will receive proxy information via email for the Annual Business Meeting held at the Internation-al Convention.

Make sure your club collaborates to determine who will carry its vote to the meeting. Designate your proxies to someone attending the International Convention. Your district leaders will be there—District Governor Brian Hatano, LGET John Davis and LGM Sondra Nunez—to attend training, vote in the International election, and represent the district on your behalf.

International Convention updates

The International Convention, the most anticipat-ed Toastmasters event of the year, will be held August 20-23, 2014, in Kuala Lumpur, Malay-sia, the first time outside North America.

For convention updates, follow on Insta-gram@toastmastersinternational, on Twitter @toastmasters, like the Facebook Fan Page, and join the Facebook members-only group. Don't forget to use the hashtag #TIConv14.

I’m proud to present District 39’s newest Distinguished Toastmasters—and first DTMS of the 2014-15 year.

Congratulations to Wanda Faye Portman, Professionally Speaking; Ruth Schwartz, Empire Toastmasters; and, Zack Souza (his second DTM), Mather Toastmasters.

Their achievement is the culmination of years of dedi-

First three DTMS of the year cation to the Toastmasters program. On the way to earning their DTMs, they gave dozens of speeches, participated in leadership roles, served as mentors and definitely made a difference in many people’s lives.

They are listed on this month’s Hall of Honor at District39.org. Along with others earning their DTM awards in the upcoming months, they will be honored at a special DTM Ceremony at the Fall Conference chaired by Noralee Cole, DTM.

District 39’s achievement of reaching Se-lect Distinguished status this year put us in good company.

We were one of 17 in the world to reach Select status. In Region 2, our neighbor districts—4 (San Francisco) and 33 (Central California/Las Vegas)—also were Select Distinguished; and District 57 (East Bay) made Distinguished. Quite a showing for Region 2, with four of the six districts mak-ing the distinguished list.

Worldwide, 18 districts were President’s Distinguished; 15 were Distinguished. The 50 distinguished districts set a new record!
