Following are several series of pitchers pitching illegally.

Page 3: Dissecting the Illegal Pitch for Base Umpires Clues to Recognizing an Illegal Pitch.

Most of the examples are of LEAPING since it is the

most prevalent. But most LEAPING also involves REPLANTING.

Page 4: Dissecting the Illegal Pitch for Base Umpires Clues to Recognizing an Illegal Pitch.

Learning to recognize and identify some of the various components of an illegal pitch will help umpires recognize the violation and make the call with confidence and

assuredness

EXAMPLE 1

Page 6: Dissecting the Illegal Pitch for Base Umpires Clues to Recognizing an Illegal Pitch.

Push is more UP than FORWARD

Page 7: Dissecting the Illegal Pitch for Base Umpires Clues to Recognizing an Illegal Pitch.

Foot is up off the ground

Arm is still going UPThis pulls pull body up

Page 8: Dissecting the Illegal Pitch for Base Umpires Clues to Recognizing an Illegal Pitch.

Pivot Foot lands while Non Pivot is still in the air, thus the Pivot has Replanted

Page 9: Dissecting the Illegal Pitch for Base Umpires Clues to Recognizing an Illegal Pitch.

Arm is at apex ready to come down with the final driving thrust concurrent with the second push of the pivot foot

Leg is bent indicating it will

push again

Page 10: Dissecting the Illegal Pitch for Base Umpires Clues to Recognizing an Illegal Pitch.

Finally the Non Pivot Foot lands preventing any more forward movement

Page 11: Dissecting the Illegal Pitch for Base Umpires Clues to Recognizing an Illegal Pitch.

And the Pivot Foot follows through with the visible drag mark on the ground…

…several inches from the pitching plate.

Both feet off the ground at the same time

Page 18: Dissecting the Illegal Pitch for Base Umpires Clues to Recognizing an Illegal Pitch.

Pivot Foot lands with BENT legArm is still at apex

REPLANT

Page 22: Dissecting the Illegal Pitch for Base Umpires Clues to Recognizing an Illegal Pitch.

So far so good

Page 23: Dissecting the Illegal Pitch for Base Umpires Clues to Recognizing an Illegal Pitch.

Drive is definitely UPWARD

Page 24: Dissecting the Illegal Pitch for Base Umpires Clues to Recognizing an Illegal Pitch.

How does she get there?Hard to tell. She might have dragged but her arm is still going up, gathering momentum, not finishing the pitch

Page 25: Dissecting the Illegal Pitch for Base Umpires Clues to Recognizing an Illegal Pitch.

Look at that BENT LEG!Think it might be getting ready to PUSH AGAIN as that arm comes around and down?

Page 26: Dissecting the Illegal Pitch for Base Umpires Clues to Recognizing an Illegal Pitch.

Look at that ARM!It is still only going up, still generating power.

Page 27: Dissecting the Illegal Pitch for Base Umpires Clues to Recognizing an Illegal Pitch.

…the down-thrust of the arm, the drive off the bent leg, non-pivot foot still in the air…

Here it comes…

Example 4

But her toe is pointing down

Page 30: Dissecting the Illegal Pitch for Base Umpires Clues to Recognizing an Illegal Pitch.
Page 31: Dissecting the Illegal Pitch for Base Umpires Clues to Recognizing an Illegal Pitch.

Yep. The toe is down.

Page 32: Dissecting the Illegal Pitch for Base Umpires Clues to Recognizing an Illegal Pitch.

It’s still down. She can’t push off her toe unless she is a ballerina…

Page 33: Dissecting the Illegal Pitch for Base Umpires Clues to Recognizing an Illegal Pitch.

Omigosh! She IS pushing cause look, her non pivot foot is still in the air.

Page 34: Dissecting the Illegal Pitch for Base Umpires Clues to Recognizing an Illegal Pitch.

Okay, now it is down and she is back on her toe…

Page 35: Dissecting the Illegal Pitch for Base Umpires Clues to Recognizing an Illegal Pitch.

…and dragging away from a new spot.

Page 36: Dissecting the Illegal Pitch for Base Umpires Clues to Recognizing an Illegal Pitch.

Watch her from the other side

Page 37: Dissecting the Illegal Pitch for Base Umpires Clues to Recognizing an Illegal Pitch.

Bent Leg

Page 38: Dissecting the Illegal Pitch for Base Umpires Clues to Recognizing an Illegal Pitch.

Pushing with Pivot Foot.Non Pivot Foot in the air.Arm at apex.

Page 39: Dissecting the Illegal Pitch for Base Umpires Clues to Recognizing an Illegal Pitch.

Final push and drag away from a whole new spot.

Page 40: Dissecting the Illegal Pitch for Base Umpires Clues to Recognizing an Illegal Pitch.

Well I guess ballerinasAND PITCHERS

can push from a toe!

Example 5

Page 41: Dissecting the Illegal Pitch for Base Umpires Clues to Recognizing an Illegal Pitch.

There’s that toe pointing down

again.

And that body going UP not forward

Page 42: Dissecting the Illegal Pitch for Base Umpires Clues to Recognizing an Illegal Pitch.

That toe must be bearing weight cause the non pivot is way up there in the air.

Page 43: Dissecting the Illegal Pitch for Base Umpires Clues to Recognizing an Illegal Pitch.

Sure enough! That BENT LEG is a good indication that she is pushing off that toe…that and her non pivot foot being in the air.

Page 44: Dissecting the Illegal Pitch for Base Umpires Clues to Recognizing an Illegal Pitch.

No doubt about it. She definitely pushed again from a spot

other than the pitching plate.

She still has the ball

Page 45: Dissecting the Illegal Pitch for Base Umpires Clues to Recognizing an Illegal Pitch.

Example 6

Leap with No ReplantToe Pointing Down

Page 46: Dissecting the Illegal Pitch for Base Umpires Clues to Recognizing an Illegal Pitch.

Leaves legally with toe pointing down

Becomes airborne. Toe still pointing

downNon Pivot lands, Pivot Foot Toe comes down and drags along the ground

Example 7

WOW!

She flies through the air with the greatest of easeThat daring young woman on the flying trapeze …err, softball field.

Page 48: Dissecting the Illegal Pitch for Base Umpires Clues to Recognizing an Illegal Pitch.

CLUES• First move up, not forward• Air under both feet• Pivot foot down, in new spot, leg

bent, non pivot still in air, arm still above head

• Drag mark on ground begins many inches from pitching plate

• Cannot SEE the pivot foot dragging

Page 49: Dissecting the Illegal Pitch for Base Umpires Clues to Recognizing an Illegal Pitch.

MYTHS

• She can’t replant if the toe is pointing down

• She can’t leap if the toe is pointing down

• She must be dragging because the toe is pointing down

Page 50: Dissecting the Illegal Pitch for Base Umpires Clues to Recognizing an Illegal Pitch.

COP-OUTS

• She is not getting an advantage• No one is complaining• I don’t want to deal with the coach

ranting• I can’t tell for sure (can you see her

drag?)• I don’t want to call attention to myself• My partner is not calling it

Page 51: Dissecting the Illegal Pitch for Base Umpires Clues to Recognizing an Illegal Pitch.

If it sounds like RATIONALIZATION

then it is!

That’s a CLUE for YOU toMake the call.

Page 52: Dissecting the Illegal Pitch for Base Umpires Clues to Recognizing an Illegal Pitch.

This is slow motion. Umpires must see with

the naked eye.

But…

Page 53: Dissecting the Illegal Pitch for Base Umpires Clues to Recognizing an Illegal Pitch.

…if you can’t SEE that the pitch is legal with

the naked eye, then it is not.
