Displacement Ventilation Overview Displacement ventilation is a fairly simple but effective and very efficient method of ventilation utilising the buoyancy of thermal activity given off from people, machines and countless other forms of heat sources. As low level air in a space warms due to the contact of a warm surface it will naturally start to rise to high level because if its buoyancy. This in turn creates an area of negative pressure at low level which pulls surrounding air towards the heat source and the cycle continues like this for as long as there is a heat source in contact with the air. Without any form of ventilation this cycle will continue rising to high level, then cool down and begin falling back to low level creating a circulation of air. If there is an excess of heat sources at low level then this will soon build up the room temperature from the ceiling down to low level, perhaps causing discomfort to the occupants or affecting the processes in the space.

The area of low level where the activity of personnel, processes or machines etc is commonly known as the “Occupied Zone” typically 2m high. This is generally where complaints are received and as a result ventilation is required.
How they work….. Displacement Ventilation makes use of the buoyancy of the warm air convective plumes rising to high level, however with the introduction of fresh air directly into the occupied zone we no longer get the circulation cycle as described above. What we achieve is displacement of the warm and or contaminated air to high level where it will be removed rather than cooling naturally and falling back down into the occupied zone. This is gives a much better air quality and temperature control at low level where it matters.

ADVANTAGES Displacement Ventilation is advantageous in this situation due to the following factors; HIGH EFFICIENCY Natural buoyancy of the warm air stratifies to high level from the occupied zone where it can be removed efficiently without the need for cooling it unlike a mixing ventilation system for example.

HEAT RECOVERY As the warm air has not been cooled then the potential for heat recovery from the warm or even hot air is far greater than any other form of ventilation. NATURAL EXHAUST If heat recovery is not necessary then natural exhaust terminals can be used without the need for electrically powered fan systems and controls.
LOW ENERGY Due to the fact that the air is introduce at low velocity into the occupied zone it minimises the need for air conditioning resulting in lower air volumes and fan sizes.

REDUCED AIR FLOW Generally factories, spots halls, shopping centres and car show rooms etc all have reasonably high internal spaces. This means that there is a very high volume of air to treat whether it is heating or cooling and this is more often than not done using some form of ventilation. Displacement ventilation is much more efficient in these applications particularly when there is a potential for high heat gains in the occupied zone. The reason being is that the design of displacement ventilation systems focuses on the occupied zone with little consideration to the high level when dealing temperature or contaminant based issues. The result therefore is greatly reduced airflow requirements to satisfy the demand of the occupied zone compared to the entire volume of the space. BETTER AIR QUALITY Because all the fresh air is introduced directly into the occupied zone the air quality is far better than that of a typical high level mixing system. An additional benefit is that due to the fact that the entire fresh air volume travels through the occupied zone it means that the air change rate in the occupied zone is much higher compared to the rest of the space.
