What is culture and how does it evolve?

The laws of cultural evolution are similar although not identical to the laws of biological evolution.

-- Leslie A. White, anthropologist. The Evolution of Culture (1959) "We may think of the culture of mankind as a whole, or of any

distinguishable portion thereof, as a stream flowing down through time. Tools, implements, utensils, customs, codes, beliefs, rituals, art forms, etc., comprise this temporal flow, or process. It is an interactive process: each

culture trait, or constellation of traits, acts and reacts upon others, forming from time to time new combinations and permutations. Novel syntheses of

cultural elements we call inventions . . "

What is culture and how does it evolve?

. . The interrelationship of these elements and classes of elements and their integration into a single, coherent whole comprise the functions, or

processes, of the cultural system . .“

"For certain purposes and within certain limits, the culture of a particular tribe, or group of tribes, or the culture of a region may be considered as a

system. . . But the cultures of tribes or regions are not self-contained, closed systems in actuality, at all. They are constantly exposed to cultural

influences, flowing in both directions with other cultures."Source: http://culture-of-peace.info/books/history/culture.html

The Culture of War The culture of war is more than just a nation being at war; it is the

physical and structural violence that permeates every aspect of culture, including language, interpersonal relationships, power dynamics and

one's relationship with nature. The culture of war manifests in a myriad of ways, and is often deeply entrenched in beliefs that can make it

seem "normal" or "natural." However, as culture is a human construct, the culture of war is human-made, and as such, can be equally

dismantled and replaced with a culture of peace. http://twbonline.pbworks.com/w/page/25739226/Culture%20of%20Peace

What is Culture of Peace? A culture of peace consists of values, attitudes, behaviours and ways of life based on nonviolence, respect for human

rights, intercultural understanding, tolerance and solidarity, sharing and free flow of information and the full

participation of women. A culture of peace includes eliminating violence, but goes beyond this through

promoting human rights, multiculturalism, solidarity, respect, and environmental stewardship from local to global

levels. http://twbonline.pbworks.com/w/page/25739226/Culture%20of%20Peace

2. Understanding, tolerance and solidarity 1.1 Tolerance is respect, acceptance and appreciation of the rich diversity of our world's cultures, our forms of expression and ways of being human. 1.2 Tolerance is not concession, condescension or indulgence. Tolerance is, above all, an active attitude prompted by recognition of the universal human rights and fundamental freedoms of others.

3. Democratic participation The fostering of democratic participation and

governance is ... the only way to replace the authoritarian structures of power which were created by and which have, in the past, sustained the culture

of war and violence ...

Page 26: Dismantling the culture of war

6. Human rights Article 23: Everyone has the right to work, to free choice of employment, to just and favourable conditions of work and to protection against unemployment.

Article 24: Everyone has the right to rest and leisure, including reasonable limitation of working hours and periodic holidays with pay.

Article 25 : Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control.

7. Sustainable Economic and Social Development

The poverty and exclusion of some increases the vulnerability of all. This represents a major change in the concept of economic growth which, in the past,

could be considered as benefitting from military supremacy and structural violence and achieved at

the expense of the vanquished and the weak.

Page 30: Dismantling the culture of war

8. Equality of Women and Men Development and peace can replace the historical inequality between men and women that has always characterized the

culture of war and violence. It is necessary to promote women's political and economic empowerment and equal representation at every level of decision-making so that women's experience,

talents, visions and potential can make their full contribution to a culture of peace.
