Classroom Management Philosophy School should be a place where students are provided with the opportunity for learning and social interaction. In order for this to happen, a teacher must create a classroom with an open door policy where students feel comfortable interacting and communicating with the teacher. The following are important aspects of how I believe a well-‐managed classroom should be: Good Classroom Management Requires Respect: This is the first rule on my Rules and Procedures list. Students and teachers are required to respect each other and respect school property. This will create a classroom where students feel safe to be in school and learn. This will also help students feel comfortable to meet new friends, answer questions, and express their ideas. If I’m going to enforce respect in my classroom, I must do a good job of modeling it. Good Classroom Management Requires Consistency:
It is important for teachers to develop rules and consequences for their classroom. Once established, it is imperative to follow these rules with every student. It can be easy for a teacher to bend the rules for students who do not normally break the rules. If this happens, the teacher may lose respect from the students. Good Classroom Management Requires Planning and Organizing: Planning and organizing begins well before the first day of school. Both the teacher and the students should know where all the supplies are located. The teacher should have all materials ready at least one night before the lesson is taught. If the teacher is planned and organized, it will allow for more instructional time. It is also imperative for students to be organized. If they are prepared, there will more time for learning. Good Classroom Management Requires Praise: Praise will not be given for everything, however, it is important to praise students for good work. Everyone loves praise because it makes them feel good and is motivating. As a teacher, there are so many things different that will arise each day. My goal is to provide all my students with the opportunity to learn. Although not everything I need to know is listed, sticking to the above as a guide will help me better manage my classroom.
Rules-‐Consequences-‐Incentives
1. Rule 1: Respect everyone and everything a. Rationale:
i. If students respect everyone and everything, it will provide a fun safe place to work and learn.
b. Consequences: i. 1 on 1 with teacher
1. The teacher will talk to student about the rule being broken and try to figure out what is causing the behavior.
ii. Call Parent 1. If the behavior continues, the teacher will make a phone call to
the parent in hopes that the parent will work with the student on correcting the behavior.
iii. Principal’s office 1. If the behavior continues and a student is disrupting the class,
the student will be sent to the principal’s office to try to correct the behavior.
c. Incentives: i. Praise
1. Praise makes students feel good inside and encourages them to keep up the good behavior.
2. Rule 2: Be Prepared
a. Rationale: i. If students are prepared, they will be more on task. This will provide more instruction time and eliminate many distractions.
b. Consequences: i. 1 on 1 with teacher
1. The teacher will talk to student about the rule being broken and try to figure out what is causing the behavior.
ii. The student will write a letter to teacher explaining how he/she wasn’t prepared and describe how he/she will be prepared next time
1. This will help the student’s writing skills. It will also remind the student to be prepared for class next time.
c. Incentives: i. Praise
1. Praise makes students feel good inside and encourages them to keep being prepared.
ii. Good work tickets (enter into a drawing every week) 1. Hand out these tickets every once in awhile to students for
being prepared. The drawing will be an incentive to be prepared.
3. Rule 3: Obey school rules a. Rationale:
i. The teacher/students can get in trouble for not obeying school rules. They are enforced to make sure everyone is safe. It is vital to follow them.
Praise
1. Praise makes students feel good inside and encourages them to keep being prepared.
ii. Good work tickets (enter into a drawing every week) 1. Hand out these tickets every once in awhile to students for
being prepared. The drawing will be an incentive to be prepared.
4. Rule 4: Try your hardest a. Rationale:
i. I will try my hardest to teach my students so I expect them to try their hardest to learn. The more we put in the more we will get out.
b. Consequences: i. 1 on 1 with teacher
1. The teacher will remind the student to always try hard and try to figure out if there is an outside issue preventing the student from trying.
ii. Call Parent 1. If the behavior continues, the teacher will make a phone call to
the parent in hopes that the parent will work with the student on effort.
Procedures To Become Routines: Decoration: At the beginning of the year, the teacher will have the basic rules, procedures, and a few posters in the room. The teacher will leave plenty of room for students to decorate with motivational posters or student work. Cleanup: Students will be required to have their desks clean off before they leave. We will do our best to make sure the janitor has as little work as possible in our classroom! Talking: I strongly believe in discussion and social interaction in my classroom. Students will be allowed to talk quietly during most activities, even when working independently on homework as long as they are not exchanging answers. They must remain quiet while the teacher is explaining a lesson, while students are presenting, or while taking a test. Students will always know when they can or cannot talk. Transitions: I will use various methods to gain the attention of my students such as turning the lights off, clapping my hands, or using verbal cues. I am a fan of music so I will usually play music during transition. Restroom: If there is an emergency, the student can ask to go, but only one may go at a time. If a student is abusing this policy, I will have a one on one with him/her to see how we can change it. If a student feels sick, he/she doesn’t need to ask to leave. Water bottles: Students are allowed to bring a water bottle to class as long as they are drinking water. They will be allowed to fill it up when they have bathroom breaks. Missed Class: Students are expected to make up assignments after missing class. The teacher will have all the make-‐up assignments for the student, but it is the student’s responsibility to come and get it. I will give a reminder if I remember. I don’t want there to be any 0’s in the grade book.
Date: October 13, 2012 Dear Ninth Grade Parents,
I hope that you and your family had a wonderful Fall! I am delighted to have your child
in my ninth grade classroom. We have a big year ahead of us as we will be reviewing past material, learning a plethora of new material, and having lots of fun along the way. I have high expectations for your child and I will do all I can to help your child succeed.
In order to reach expectations, I need to create a classroom where students follow rules
and procedures. My rules are very basic: Respect yourself, respect others, and respect your school. Consequences may include having a one on one with the teacher, calling parents, or going to the principal’s office. Incentives may include praise, good work tickets which can lead to prizes.
Some suggestions to meet success: 1. Use assignment book daily so you know when projects are due. 2. Use time wisely. 3. Take pride in doing your very best in school. 4. Turn in homework on time.
I expect all homework assignments to be completed. There may be variations on homework assignments depending on the student. I do accept late work for partial credit, so it is better to hand homework in late than never. Absent students will meet with me to discuss what needs to be made up.
Here is my grading scale: 95-‐100 = A 93-‐94 = A-‐ 90-‐92 = B+ 85-‐89 = B 83-‐84 = B-‐ 80-‐82 = C+ 75-‐79 = C, 73-‐74 = C-‐ 70-‐72 = D+ 66-‐69 = D 65 and below = F.
An important aspect in a classroom is keeping lines of communication open with the
parents. If you have any questions please feel free to reach me in any of the following ways:
Email:[email protected] Phone: 712-‐555-‐5515.
Again, I’m excited to spend the next nine months with your child and I’m looking forward to a great year!
Sincerely,
Grant Aden

Supplemental Resources: ELL Students in the Classroom: The number of English Language Learners is constantly on the rise. Like all other students, it is my responsibility to meet their needs so that they may learn to their fullest potential. I not only have to do this, but I am excited to do this. Because of this, I have many methods and strategies that I will use so they will be successful and engaged in my classroom. Strategies/Rationale: ~I will become friends with the AEA as they have many multi-‐cultural activities, books, and ideas that I may use to reach English Language Learners in my classroom. ~I will have my students and myself become more aware of different cultures, especially those of our English Language Learners. This will create a welcoming environment to our classroom. ~I will let our English Language Learners teach us about their culture. This will build confidence for the Language Learners and be a learning experience for other students in the class. ~I will connect to students’ prior knowledge and interests. (Use interest inventories) ~I will focus more on the knowledge of the student rather than grammar or pronunciation of the student, because the little things will come with time. ~I will explain directions in more than one way (orally, written, visuals, etc.). ~I will simplify language and paraphrase so that English Language Learners understand information easier. ~I will give lots of visuals so the students can connect pictures to words. ~I will give some tests orally so I know if the students really don’t know the content or if they miss questions because they can’t read the problems.
