Module 6: VBDs, Zoonosis & GIS Program
(March 1 2017 DRAFT)
Background
The Mediterranean Program for Intervention Epidemiology Training (MediPIET) is a training
program in Intervention Epidemiology funded by the European Commission and implemented
by the Spanish Consortium: National Public Health Institute (ISCIII) and the International and
Ibero-American Foundation for Administration and Public Policies (FIIAPP)-, under the
scientific leadership of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).
The purpose of the program is to consolidate a competent workforce in intervention
epidemiology able to carry out essential public health functions for the prevention and
control of national and cross-border challenges posed by communicable diseases
(http://medipiet.eu).
Cohort 2 Module 6 on Vector borne diseases, Zoonosis and GIS is one of the disease specific
modules -in total 9, 2 disease specific- within the 2 year “ learning by doing” training program.
Title of the training module
Vector-borne diseases, Zoonosis & GIS.
Dates, place and venue
6-10 March 2017 Athens Greece.
The training will take place at hotel Radisson Blue Park Athens, Greece
https://www.radissonblu.com/en/hotel-athens. On March 6 the field exercise and laboratory
demonstration will take place at the National School of Public Health.
Learning objectives
VBDs & Zoonosis- 6-8 March 2017
Refresh knowledge of epidemiology of vector borne diseases (VBDs) and zoonosis.
Understand the specificity of VBD & Zoonosis outbreak investigations.
Become acquainted with the role of laboratory, entomological and environmental
factors for the control of VBDs & Zoonosis.
Gain knowledge with regard to VBD and zoonosis risk assessment, surveillance,
response and preparedness characteristics within the intersectoral collaboration and
One Health approach.
Visit to the NSPH – Monday 6 March 2017 – afternoon
Raise awareness about ecological and environmental issues
MediPIET Module 6, Cohort 2 2015-17 Page 3
Become familiar with the key aspects of sample larvae, pupae and adult mosquito
sampling and transportation from natural habitats;
Understand the purpose of the analysis carried out in the lab and interpretation of the
results.
GIS 9 &10 March 2017
Be familiar with the principles of spatial epidemiology
Get initiated to spatial analysis
Be acquainted with the characteristics and use of GIS software
Be introduced to the principles and use of modeling in CDs epidemiology prevention
and control.
At the end of the module, participants will be able to:
Design a surveillance system for VBDs, describe the particularities of VBDs and
zoonosis OBI and preparedness building.
Identify the particularities of spatial data that distinguish it from non-spatial,
Describe the specific use of spatial analysis within public health,
Use the available GIS software in order to create the map needed for the data
presentation and analysis.
Pedagogical methods
The Module will include:
Presentations on the theoretical basis
Country presenations with the specific countries’ experience with VBDs and zoonosis
surveillance and response.
One Case study with a real example on WNV surveillance and response in Serbia.
One practical exercise with Zika virus preparedness and response.
Practical exercises for the use of GIS software.
The lectures will be delivered in plenary. Participants will be divided in groups for the case
studies and practical exercises.
Evaluation and Certificates
The training objectives, content and facilitation will be evaluated using quantitative methods
and a web based questionnaire to be filled at the end of the course by participants on site.
Participants will receive a certificate of participation.

based surveillance and response to outbreaks, and/or having completed the MediPIET
Training Modules 1: Introduction to Intervention Epidemiology and 2 on Outbreak
investigation and computer tools, AND
• Familiar with measures of disease occurrence AND data entry and management,
AND
• Having adequate speaking and writing capacity in English: participants should be able
