How To Contact Us
Veterinary Investigation Centres
Bury St Edmunds
APHA Veterinary Investigation Centre, Rougham Hill, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, IP33 2RX
APHA has a network of six Veterinary Investigation Centres carrying out post mortem examinations in Englandand Wales. The network also includes APHA's specialist avian centre at Lasswade in Scotland, a laboratorytesting facility at Newcastle and a central research and diagnostic facility at Weybridge in Surrey.
The Agency offers diagnostic testing, advice and support to veterinary surgeons in practice for the diagnosis, control andprevention of disease in farm animals. The information generated forms an important part of the disease surveillance carriedout by APHA under contract to the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra). It enables Defra to monitor theemergence of new diseases and changes in the pattern of existing ones, so that appropriate intervention to control diseasecan be made. In order to maximise the surveillance value of this service, for which Defra provides a significant level offinancial support, APHA requires every submission to be accompanied by a fully completed APHA Submission Form.
In addition to UK diagnostic surveillance, the Agency also offers a wide variety of testing and advice for other purposes suchas farm health planning, investigation of disease in companion animals and animals outside the UK at the time of sampling,pre-export and post-import testing, statutory and non-statutory artificial insemination, etc.
Results
The results of all tests will be reported as rapidly as possible. Maximum turnaround times are given for guidance. Results canbe faxed, if requested on the submission form or later by telephoning the relevant contact number. This service may attractan extra charge if multiple faxes are required. Special delivery instructions may also attract extra charges. Results will bereported to the sender but can be copied to other recipients, provided we receive a written request (letter or fax) from thesubmitting Veterinary Surgeon.
For tests sent to APHA Weybridge and where all test results prove negative, the results will only be reported when all testson a submission are completed. However, tests giving positive results will be reported immediately. If you require negativeresults to be reported immediately, please indicate this on the submission form.
Quality
Tests carried out within APHA are assured by a comprehensive quality assurance system. Most of the tests are subject tothird party accreditation by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) to the internationally recognised ISO/IEC17025 standard for laboratory competence. The UKAS accreditation certificate (accreditation no. 1769) specifies APHAWeybridge as the principal location. The APHA VICs and APHA Lasswade also form part of the accredited group, as detailed inthe UKAS accreditation schedule.
Reports from members of the group are issued under the name and address of the location responsible for the work and notAPHA Weybridge or that of the location within the accredited group that carried out the work. The UKAS mark appears on allsingle reports, or series of reports for a single submission, where accredited tests are reported.
In some circumstances, tests may be subcontracted to non-APHA laboratories. Where this is necessary, preference will begiven to laboratories holding the appropriate UKAS accreditation. Where this is not possible, other laboratories will be usedbut in such circumstances the laboratories will be selected for their known specialty and expertise in a specific area of work. The following marks against specific tests within reports allow the identification of non-UKAS accredited tests and ofsubcontracted tests: † = Not UKAS accredited; opinions given and interpretations of the result are outside the scope of UKASaccreditation. ‡ = Test subcontracted; opinions given and interpretations of the result are outside the scope of UKASaccreditation. § = Test accredited under Flexible Scope.
Veterinary Interpretations and Opinions expressed in the 'comment' section of APHA Regional Laboratory reports are coveredby UKAS accreditation where based on results of accredited Post Mortem Examinations or accredited tests.
For further details of test methods used and the most up-to-date test accreditation status please contact the local APHA VIC.The current schedule of accreditation may be obtained from the UKAS website.
Reports may contain information given to APHA by submitters under the heading 'History' but APHA is unable to verify ortake responsibility for the content therein. However, in order to assist private veterinary surgeons, reference to the historyprovided may be included in the 'Comment' section of the report.
Terms and Conditions
Samples may be used anonymously for further disease surveillance or research work. If you do not wish to concur, pleaseannotate the submission form appropriately.
Tests are carried out under APHA 'Standard Terms and Conditions for Supply of Services'. These are available onrequest from your local APHA VIC, from APHA Weybridge or on the APHA website. By submitting a sample to any APHAlaboratory, customers are deemed to accept these arrangements. Customers will be notified if samples are unsuitable fortesting.
The tests offered in this price list are for the purposes of diagnostic screening or UK statutory import testing. No disease ordisease-free status per se of any animal is conferred nor should be implied by any single test result. No value is conveyed, nor should be implied, to any animal(s) to which results relate. Maximum liability to the customer for loss or damage arisingfrom an inaccurate report based on a single test is limited to £1,000. It should be borne in mind that all tests have intrinsicinaccuracies. In circumstances where a test result may be used as part of an assessment of disease status, a number ofrepeated tests or test samplings is advisable to minimise the chance of conferring a misleading status to any animal. If anytest result is used to establish the disease status of any animal(s), due consideration should be given to seeking independentinsurance to cover any implied value or cost that this status or change of status may convey.
Complaints Procedure
If there are any aspects of the testing service with which you are dissatisfied, please contact the appropriate laboratory. Inthe event of any further difficulties which cannot be resolved by these channels please ring the Quality Management Unit on01932 357936.
