“About 1/5th of all global deaths were a result of infectious diseases.” (WHO)

Developing countries are most affected. The rate of death from infectious diseases is almost 14 times higher in low income countries than in high income countries.

Diseases passed from wildlife to humans, are a growing threat to human health, and human pathogens originating from wildlife have increased substantially in recent years

Infectious diseases have had a large impact on demographic trends, altering the age structure of heavily affected countries.

Henipavirus Infection

•Outbreak of Henipavirus Infection, Philippines, 2014: (wwwnc.cdc.gov) the Philippine National Epidemiology Center received a report of human deaths in 2 villages, Tinalon and Midtungok, in Sultan Kudarat, Mindanao

•Caused severe illness among humans and horses in southern Philippines; fatality rates among humans were high

West Nile Fever

•the dreaded West Nile virus, transmitted by mosquitoes, causing sleeping sickness, is present in Thailand, Malaysia, Turkey, Albania and the Philippines (University of Florida, 2002)

•2002: 12 victims confirmed in Ormoc City, Central Philippines > have fallen ill due to an unknown virus > blood samples sent to CDC in Atlanta, Georgia > confirmed positive
