Five Core Features

Each alternative must have these features

1. Electronic Document Management

2. Research Index

3. Symposium Center

4. Discussion Forum

5. What’s New

* Access to proprietary information limited

Page 13: Discussion and Research Academic Forum for Engineering

1. Electronic Document Management

What kinds of documents?

• MS Thesis

• Ph. D. Dissertations

• White Papers

What else?

• Purchase Technical Reports

Page 14: Discussion and Research Academic Forum for Engineering

1. Electronic Document Management

Where will the data come from?

• MS Thesis Faculty Advisor

• Ph.D. Dissertations Faculty Advisor

• White Papers Student Faculty

• Technical Reports Team w/Competitor

Page 15: Discussion and Research Academic Forum for Engineering

2. Research Index

• What does it do?– Provide brief & detailed tutorials on specific

research areas – Guides to research areas that explain the

field, terms, research efforts– Patent information

Page 16: Discussion and Research Academic Forum for Engineering

3. Symposium Center

What will be listed?• Symposium• Conference• Workshops

What’s special about this?• Software agent searches known sites for info• Online postings from users & advertisers

Page 17: Discussion and Research Academic Forum for Engineering

4. Discussion Forum

How and why?• Use commercial software• Indexed by alphabetical order• Taking advantage of audience

What’s special about this?• Multiple forums at one site• Troublemakers put into penalty box

Page 18: Discussion and Research Academic Forum for Engineering

5. What’s New

How and why?• Information about:

– Latest publications– Newest text books/revisions– Academic related software– Research Break throughs

• Autonomous agents search the web• User & advertiser updates

Three Alternatives

• High-end– Best service, quality, capability– Highest level of information integration

• Progressive– Slightly lower capability than High-end– Toughest issues eliminated

• Supportive– Little integration and limited capabilities

Page 21: Discussion and Research Academic Forum for Engineering

Progressive Concept Selected

Why?

• Desire an innovative product

• Don’t want to fail by biting off too much

• High-end alternative est cost 6x more

• Supportive product too status quo

Page 22: Discussion and Research Academic Forum for Engineering

Progressive Concept Selected

Besides core features, what else?– Integration - links electronically added for

references, contacts, explanations– Context sensitive recommendations– Info & analysis of research topics, funding,

implementation– Search engine adjustable for synonyms, related

terms, & precision– Redundant database for university’s documents &

local use of core features located at university

Page 23: Discussion and Research Academic Forum for Engineering

Who Will Pay & How Much?

• Two types of users– University subscriber: $6,000/year– Individual subscriber: $ 35/year

• Where’s the catch?– Individual does not get:

• Submit graduate papers• Search technical reports• Tutorials

Page 24: Discussion and Research Academic Forum for Engineering

Where’s the Benefit?

• Central storage of graduate papers

• Power put in faculty and student hands

• Links placed into documents reduces hunting for right paper, person

• People of common interests together

• Tutorials, definitions a click away

• Real-time analysis of research trends

Term Definition and Summary

Abstract

This paper discusses the aiding of decision making for ship and submarine controllers of ... navigating to the submarine, . . . The decision aid was developed to aid in the detection and identification of perceptual cues. Six characteristics of dynamic tasks were considered when evaluating controller and decision aid performance. Definition

Method

While several pilot trials were conducted with and without the decision aid, only one test trial was performed. Limited quantitative data and qualitative data were gathered for two trials without the decision aid. The independent variable is the decision aid provided to the ship controller. Dependent variables consisted of several task performance times, errors, completion of critical tasks, and six characteristics of dynamic decision making as identified by Brehmer (1992).
