What is discrimination?To discriminate means to show

preference, or to choose.

Discrimination is considering a type of person to be less value than one’s own or to deliberately act against a group of people or to favour one group above another.

A disproportionate number of African Caribbean men are diagnosed with schizophrenia, leading some people to believe that the entire theory of schizophrenia is based on racist ideas.

African Caribbean men are also more likely than their white counterparts to be inpatients on mental health wards, to receive invasive medical treatments (e.g. electroconvulsive therapy) rather than talking treatments (e.g. psychotherapy or counselling), and to be re-admitted to hospital after discharge into the community.

which leads us to forming an opinion about ourselves.

Self esteem involves 1) having knowledge about ourselves 2) receiving feedback from other people

Therefore our self-esteem will be influenced by the experiences we have and the way people treat us. Self esteem needs to be built up and encouraged in the caring process.
