CAVAL

• About CAVAL

• Major programs include– CAVAL Reciprocal Borrowing Program– CARM Shared Collection

• Fee for Service activities

• CAVAL – Relais International partnership– Relais ILL support, HelpDesk, implementation– Relais D2D / CAVAL D2D

Relais D2D• Functionality

– Unmediated discovery, request & delivery, load balanced, no ‘dead ends’ for users

• System neutral application

• Uses NCIP protocol

• In operation through several resource sharing

networks in North America

Pilot Implementation

• Aims

• Proof of concept

• Timelines

• Initial participants – RMIT, ACU, CAVAL

CARM Shared Collection

Project Challenges & Issues

• ALMA – Relais integration

• Additional participant (UNSW)

• Relais ILL & D2D back-end integration

• Development by Ex Libris & Relais

International

• Loans policies & management

If the item is available locally – redirection to library catalogue deeplink

Page 10: Discovery to Delivery: enabling an unmediated resource discovery and delivery service in a collaborative context Cathie Jilovsky & Michael Robinson.

If the item is not available via D2D – redirection to local ILL system

A requestable title is found – select pick-up campus from drop-down and hit request

A book band is emailed to the supplying library as a pdf – to be printed and attached to the item.

This incorporates address labels that can be used for posting the material.

Library staff log in to the web portal

and scan the book strap barcode to loan out the item.

Page 14: Discovery to Delivery: enabling an unmediated resource discovery and delivery service in a collaborative context Cathie Jilovsky & Michael Robinson.

An NCIP transaction is initiated to the LMS – which records the item as checked out. Due date stamped on the book strap before posting. Audit history updated to shipped.

The book arrives at the requesting library

Page 16: Discovery to Delivery: enabling an unmediated resource discovery and delivery service in a collaborative context Cathie Jilovsky & Michael Robinson.

Requesting library loan the item to their patron – NCIP can be used to initiate a transaction to the LMS

Book is returned by the patron, returned in CAVALBorrow (the system anticipates the next action required and sends NCIP message as required) and sent back.

Item available in D2D – clicking request initiates a redirection to in-house Relais ILL system

Project Outcomes

• CAVALborrow network established

• Delivers un-mediated seamless access to

users across disparate library systems

• Back-end integration of Relais ILL & D2D

• First live transactions December 2014

• Full operational mode 2015

Page 20: Discovery to Delivery: enabling an unmediated resource discovery and delivery service in a collaborative context Cathie Jilovsky & Michael Robinson.

CAVAL Developmental Stages

• Opportunity to join established network

• Need for critical mass of resources

• Integration with CAVAL Reciprocal Borrowing

Program (for CAVAL members)

• Linking of CAVALborrow and BONUS+

networks - potential and challenges

• National unmediated resource sharing?
