pring has sprung! I can say this, because currently it’s beautifully sunny and there’s the faint green of tiny buds appearing on my tree outside. Those little green shoots are always my first marker that winter is finally behind us. And I, for one, am glad to welcome the warmer weather! To celebrate the start of spring, comes the annual Mayor’s Duck Race, which returns this year on Monday 6th April. And it’s not too late to buy a duck! You can claim your duck at either the various places outlined on page 51, or pick one on the day. Each duck only costs £1, but all the money raised will go to the Mayor’s charities - and it’s always a great day out. So be sure to pop down to the bridge beside the Hero of Aliwal and support this fun community event. This month we are bursting at the seams with local news and community stories, from a spotlight on Whittlesey Cricket Club, to information about the upcoming elections next month, we’ve got it all. We’ve even taken a peek behind the scenes at The New Crown. Finally I’d like to welcome any budding photographers to send in your favourite images of Whittlesey to be considered for our front cover. It can be anything from one of our beautiful churches, to some beautiful flowers in the town centre. If you’ve got a picture that you think would look great on the magazine cover, please do email them to me at [email protected] Lastly, please do take part in our Easter Egg Competition. Not only is it great fun, but you could win a giant Easter egg. For more details please turn to page 30. I’d like to wish you all a very happy Easter, and my darling son, a very happy second birthday. Where does the time go? Please note the editorial deadline for the May issue will be the 12th of April.

ALAN HODGEDear Natasha,
I was pleased to see an acknowledgement to Geoff Oldfield by Dave Mason last month.
As David Mason has said, Geoff is so knowledgeable and always willing to share with
those interested.Following Geoff and Margaret as curators of Whittlesey museum, I would always have a question for them on their continued visits.
It is so good that Geoff recorded his knowledge both for the museum and in the most interesting
articles for Discovering Whittlesey, also in his book ‘The Governors of the Town Revenues of
Whittlesey’.I'm sure like lots of people, Pages in History, was one of the things I couldn't wait to read. Thanks
Geoff. Now, Thank you Tony for continuing "Local History" I will look forward to each month’s
edition.Thank you, Maureen Watson

Does anyone own their own business and are looking to advertise further? Or know anyone who is trying to do the same? I currently manage Coates Athletic FC Under 15's, who are merging with Whittlesey United to form Whittlesey Athletic next season. I am currently looking for sponsors for the boys’ team who are in need of various things from tracksuits, kit bags, training kits, even trophies for our end of season presentation. I am just enquiring to see if anybody would be interested in sponsoring and supporting the lads that play football, and if you would be willing to sponsor/donate money to help the young lads further develop their talents. Any amount is considered a massive contribution, and myself and the club would be exceptionally grateful. If you become a sponsor, and would like to, we can arrange, as we are currently with others, to have an advertising board put up at our Home Ground, Feldale Field. If anyone is interested please send me a message with details and if you require any more details please don't hesitate to contact me via email on: [email protected], or by phone on: 07743061038.

Garden Jobs for Aprilplants as the days lengthen. Check if plants need watering every few days.
l Feed hungry shrubs and roses.Apply a general purpose fertiliser to beds and borders. Take care not to damage emerging shoots or to burn them with the fertiliser.
l Sow new lawns or repair bare patches.Sowing new lawns or over-seeding dead patches can be carried out from mid-April onwards. Prepare the ground for sowing by digging, levelling and slightly firming beforehand.
l Prune shrubs, trees and hedges.April is the perfect month to prune shrubs, trees and hedges before birds begin to nest. Remove foliage from any overgrown evergreen shrubs and cut back summer flowering shrubs such as hydrangeas.
l Divide herbaceous perennials.Divide and transplant clumps of herbaceous perennials that have become too large for their space and those that are flowering poorly or have lost their shape.
pring should be well under way this month with daffodils in flower and blossom trees blooming. ‘April Showers’ are common but don’t be deceived by sudden bursts of rainfall – you may need to start watering plants more regularly during dry, bright and windy days. With longer days and stronger sunshine growing conditions are continually improving and the warmer weather should give us all the opportunity to get busy in our gardens.
l Keep weeds under control.Hand dig out weeds from your borders before they get out of control then you will only need to hoe occasionally throughout the season. To suppress weeds add a layer of bark to your borders.
l Sow hardy annuals.Hardy annuals are plants that can be sown from seed in the open ground. Get them off to an early start by sowing in pots or modules. Modular trays are also handy for sowing summer bedding plants such as marigolds, lobelia and petunias. Label each seed tray and once they are growing put them outside when the weather is reliably warm day and night.
l Increase the water given to houseplants.Increase the watering of indoor and conservatory

I am now coming to the end of my two year term as Mayor of Whittlesey, an unforgettable experience which has been both an honour and a privilege. Very few get the opportunity of serving their local community in the office of Mayor and I count myself extremely fortunate to have had this opportunity of representing the town of Whittlesey and I trust that I have in some modest form made a difference. I am certainly grateful to all of you who have praised my efforts and equally I sincerely hope that I have been able to take constructive criticism when it has been levelled at me. The role of Mayor carries many responsibilities from representing the town at civic events throughout Cambridgeshire and the surrounding counties to overseeing the administration of the Whittlesey Town Council as its Chairman. This involves acting in conjunction with the Town Clerk on a daily basis to deal with public enquiries, sitting on various committees, dealing with the concerns of ward residents, in my case the St Andrew’s ward to importantly supporting local charities and organising fundraising events to assist them in continuing to function effectively for the sake of the local community. Amongst my Mayor’s Charities last year were Community Navigators, an organisation offering advice and practical help to our citizens as well as signposting them to other means of assistance; Friends of Whittlesey Library to help them continue the excellent service that the library provides for us all and also the Whittlesey Scouts and Guides Association to develop the future citizens of our town. In my second year the beneficiaries will be the Sue Ryder, Thorpe Hall project in Peterborough that has in the past provided unrivalled support for so many in Whittlesey and is currently fundraising for the future development of their site; the Veterans Fund of the Whittlesey Branch of The Royal British Legion to care for those heroes who have given so much themselves in the past to safeguard our community and finally a project that I had the pleasure of founding, the Whittlesey Emergency Food Aid. The money raised for all these charities has come from various sources, revenue from civic services, band concerts, the publication of my collection of photographs taken by local artists and entitled “Whittlesey in Flood”, civic dinner dances, and duck races. The final duck race takes place this Easter Monday 6 April starting from the Hero of Aliwal Public House at 2pm and is always a fun event which was particularly well
attended last year. All of these events would have had little chance of success without the tremendous backing and hard work of so many people who have given up their free time to assist in their running. Equally, those who have donated cash and prizes so generously and of course all of you who have turned out in person to support the individual events. My heartfelt thanks to you all. Two people in particular have been responsible for ensuring the success of my past two years in office; my wife and Mayoress, Ann, and my Town Clerk, Mrs Sue Evans who between them arguably have known where I am or should be 24 hours a day and I cannot thank them enough for all their hard work and loyalty. Some of you will be aware of some of my other occupations within the town which include Churchwarden and Verger of St Andrew’s Church. Wherever possible I prepare the church for funeral services and I am privileged to be present when so many wonderful eulogies of deceased citizens are delivered, often revealing dedication and commitments to both their own families and the area of Whittlesey at large over many years. I have to confess that many bring a lump to my throat and in a very small way I feel the emotion, grief and pain of those left behind. As a Christian at Eastertime I am reminded of the wonder of Christ dying and his resurrection enabling us all to grasp the opportunity of eternal life. My wish is for all those who grieve at this time to be comforted by the joyous message of Easter and may God bless you all.
Until my final issue next month………….

000 years have passed and the Age of Iron is the time of men. Powerful kings and queens rule the tribes of Britain. The islands of Whittlesey are now part of the Kingdom of the Iceni. Men still live on the edges of the fens and marshes used now for summer grazing. It was the dog who first alerted Gwyr in his workshop. Stretching his aching back he walked out into the mizzling day. Across the droveway a boatman stood by his craft at the willow tree at the bend in the river; but it was a trader with his backpack and his cap pulled down over his hair that intrigued the carpenter. “Morning. You are Gwyr the tago (elder) of the tribesmen here?” the trader said inclining his head respectfully.“I am”.“You are summoned to Stonea in two days time. All the tribal elders are being called hence.”Gwyr nodded, “Come, dry yourself and take a mug by the fire for your trouble.” He called the boatman and the three of them walked over to his house. Inside they sat down around the central hearth while his wife brought them some wheaten ale.“It must be important, this summoning”, said Gwyr with a questioning look, “tis only a month since we were there for Imbolc (festival of the new lambs)” The trader took a mouthful of ale and nodded.“From the south the rumours come, thick as thieves they are. Tales have it Romish ships have been seen off the southern coast. Men speak of invasion”“They came before”, Gwyr said, “but did not stay. What’s different?”“A new Emperor that’s what,” the trader replied, “new Emperor, new glories methinks.”Swallowing the last of his beer, the trader stood and bowed.“I must be on my way,” he said as Gwyr and the boatman stood also, “good health to this house. My thanks for your courtesy.” The three of them walked to the river bank through the rain. As they rowed away, the trader shouted, “Two days remember, two days.” Gwyr sent his apprentice to make the rounds of the scattered houses and the next day he told the assembled men and women the news.
4The Iron Age. Month 2.
“I do not know why”, he replied to the mass of questions, “only that it must be important. As soon as I get back, I’ll let you know what they say.” Next day found Gwyr at Stonea among a host of tribal elders in the great hall. All fell silent as one of the chiefs stood forward on the dais.“Elders of the Iceni: you are called here to hear the words of Prasutagus, Chief of our people. The Emperor of the Romans has landed armies on the shores of the Cantiaci (Kent) and the Trinovantes (Essex). Their chieftains are resisting the invaders but the Romish have thousands of troops. Our king mindful of this, is seeking a peace between the Iceni and the Emperor. Make our people aware of that, but be ready if you are called to stand and fight.” It was late that night when a sombre Gwyr got back home. The rain had stopped and the sky was full of stars. As he walked down the droveway past his sleeping neighbours he glanced up towards the high land and the woods illuminated by the full moon. How much of this would survive he wondered.

charity shops for national art projectCambridgeshire and Peterborough Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has extended its public consultation on NHS 111 and GP Out of Hours services for an additional two weeks. The consultation ran until Friday 6 March 2015. This extension was due to difficulties with the distribution of information over the Christmas period. East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) shops across the region are calling for people to donate their broken or discarded jewellery as the charity joins a national performance project. The project, called JUNK: rubbish to gold, is being hosted by The School of Jewellery at Birmingham City University. To mark the school’s 125th anniversary they are collecting broken, unserviceable, unsellable jewellery of any quality from individuals and charity shops across the country. The project will then see the ‘junk’ transformed at a week-long live event into ‘new’ jewellery by a large number of jewellers from students to recent graduates and lecturers. The performances will take place from Monday 9th to Friday 13th November and will see participating audience members rummaging through the donated items to select jewellery for re-imagining. All the ‘new’ items made will be exhibited and sold via a silent auction the following week with a percentage of the funds going back to the involved charities in proportion to the weight of jewellery donated. Gabrielle Spray, Head of Retail for EACH, said: “We’re thrilled to be involved in the JUNK: rubbish to gold project and we’re asking anyone
who has any broken or unwanted jewellery to bring it along to one of our shops, which can be found across East Anglia. It can be tangled, tarnished, falling apart – it all counts! The more weight in jewellery we can donate to the project – the more money EACH will get back from the auction to help us to continue to care for children and young people with life-threatening conditions and support their families.” EACH has 16 shops across East Anglia, including one in Whittlesey. For EACH shop opening times and information visit www.each.org.uk/support-us. For more information on the JUNK: rubbish to gold project please visit https://www.facebook.com/rubbishtogold

| Community newsHelp for local burns victims after 40 years
Last month saw the culmination of nearly 40 years’ hard work fundraising for local burns victims come to an end with a presentation dinner at Peterborough Masonic Hall at which national hero Simon Weston was the guest of honour. Simon gave a very amusing talk on his experiences of his time in the Welsh Guards before and after his horrific experience in the Falklands Islands in 1982. Over 150 guests attended the ceremony, including local MP Stewart Jackson, to mark the closing of the Burns Unit Appeal Fund which originated from Whittlesey in the 1970s when Shelia Conning commenced fundraising after her mother died from burns injuries, thereafter she vowed to do something to help burns victims and their families and she established a charity with that specific aim. Many events were held over the years to raise funds including coffee mornings, jumble sales, discos, sky dives, sponsored walks and these funds have been invested in shares and other investments. The aim was to try and establish a local burns facility for victims in and around Peterborough. Unfortunately
because of NHS reorganisation, no dedicated Burns facility can be established locally and all local burns victims are treated for their injuries at Broomfield Hospital near Chelmsford once they have been stabilised in local hospitals. Local Trustees, Kevin Woodthorpe and Jan Whitbourn, decided recently that it would be best now to wind up the charity and distribute the cash in line with Sheila’s original wishes. Since victims are now transferred to Chelmsford, it was decided to award funds to the hospital there with specified conditions as to where funds could be spent. Back in February, representatives from Broomfield Hospital led by Professor Peter Dziewulski received a cheque for £750,000 to be spent in line with the Trustees’ wishes. A raffle and auction were held at the event and the proceeds were split between the local charity Anna’s Hope and the Royal British Legion with each receiving £750. Everyone who attended agreed it was a truly memorable evening with an unforgettable speaker who gave a unique address laced with typical forces humour but whose courage and positivity in the face of extreme adversity was an inspirational example of true British grit for all who attended.
WHITTLESEY LADYSMITH W.I.At the March meeting Tony King who had been a Gamesmaker for both the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games gave us all the inside story on the 8 weeks he spent volunteering his time and skills in London. Very inspiring. There is to be a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace in June to celebrate the Centenary of the Women's Institute. Each W.I. is allocated one place and at the March meeting a secret ballot was held to choose our representative. The lucky member is Corrine Wooding who is absolutely delighted. The April meeting will be on Tuesday 14th at
7.30pm in St Andrew's Hall as usual and there will be a Bring & Buy stall. The demonstrator will be Sue Welfare making papier mache toys and the competition is a homemade craft item. Also at that meeting members will be able to reserve their places on the summer outing to Burghley House for which the coach is already booked. On Friday 24th April a visit to Van Hage is planned for lunch and some retail therapy so lots to look forward to. New members and guests are always welcome at our meetings. Details Sue 205927.

Spring is now just around the corner, the weather is improving and the Street Pride volunteers are back out in force. The first Saturday of March saw the team arrive at the Manor Leisure Centre in the morning to blitz the area of as much litter that we could pick. This was followed up later in the afternoon at the Rose Garden in Church Street for an early spring clean. The totalnumber of bags collected on the day was 41, which saw 340 Kg rubbish collected. Street Pride wish to place on record our sincere appreciation to the Norwich andPeterborough Building Society members of staff, led by Peter and Georgie for once again supporting the effort in keeping the town as clean as possible, which made for a pleasant afternoon under the guidance of David, Margaret and Jen. All of this activity followed the enjoyable evening at Whittlesey library the night before when Street Pride members attended the quiz by

What is Hospital at Home? The Hospital at Home Service is a unique concept in home hospital care. Patients, in certain circumstances, may be given the choice of being nursed in hospital or in their own home. All Patients in the Peterborough, Whittlesey and Oundle areas are eligible providing that the GP, District Nursing Sister/Charge Nurse and Carer if applicable, will accept responsibility for the patient and that the patient fits the simple criterion, which is:Without Hospital At Home, The Patient Would Be In Hospital. The fact that patients need not be parted from their family or familiar surroundings has proved beneficial to a speedier recovery. We do nurse
a proportion of terminally ill patients who can remain at home surrounded by their loved ones. There is nothing for the patient / family to pay. The Hospital at Home Friends Group is a registered charity that raises funds to pay for nursing hours for the Hospital at Home Service. One of their many fund raising activities is a 200 Club. Members pay £1.00 per month and, while helping the Service, can win a substantial cash prize in the biannual draw. To join the 200 Club, please contact:Roger Burbage, 153 Coneygree Road, Stanground, Peterborough. PE2 8LQ Tel: 01733 561001Email: [email protected]
entering two teams. Lattersey car park was the meeting point for our next litter pick, when we would concentrate on an area known for fly tipping. As we moveinto the month of April, our efforts will increase with the maintenance of our existing “Gateway” projects, a wildflower distribution project, plus a new incentive we trust will materialise once approval is given. Street Pride wish you all aHappy Easter, plus our AGM is to be held on Wednesday 15th April at 19.30 hours.

Our desire was for something we could become personally involved with; we also preferred not to give to an organisation, where a sizeable portion of our support would go in operational overheads, leaving just a small portion to go to its intended destination. In an amazing way, we came into contact with a little known charity, The Harold Mission Orphanage, which was based in Luanshya, Zambia, and struggling to survive. At that time, it catered for around 40 resident orphans and a further 60-80 children from the local township, who they fed and educated. What we heard and saw touched us so deeply, we instinctively knew we had found our project. Since then, various ones of our congregation have spent their holidays visiting the orphanage to help wherever they are needed. Each time, they returned having been profoundly moved both by the incredible warmth of loving welcome, despite their real poverty, and enormous need. Initially our commitment was to provide sufficient funds each year to feed the children. As our congregation continued to grow, so did our support. In 2014 another team visited the orphanage, taking with them suitcases of clothes, shoes, educational books, 3 sewing machines and of course some special treats. A couple of the team immediately set about teaching some of the ladies how to use the sewing machines, then created a business plan to help them raise funds for themselves and the orphanage. Sadly they also came back with news of 2 major problems which humanly speaking which, unfortunately, werebeyond our finances to solve. The well had collapsed
and needed major work to enable it to once again provide clean water. Also, the growth in numbers of children being catered for meant that a toilet and shower block was urgently needed. Without hesitation our congregation began believing God to answer prayer and committing itself to raising the £1000+ to fix the well. Today, clean water is flowing, with a further supply irrigating the land to grow fresh produce. We also knew we had to give the children a healthier environment by providing funds to build the toilet / shower block. As part of this we want to invite you all to:

ZAMBIAN PROJECT | A word from Brian Smithyman
| Policing your area by Paul Harris, Whittlesey Geographic SergeantThe car crime series continued to be a massive issue with lots of offences being reported. We worked hard to place many measures within the town to enable us to target potential offenders. The community were very frustrated and rightly so, as were we. However with good community liaison we managed to get one person arrested and hope they will get charged for a number of crimes. However I am not satisfied until the issue is totally resolved and we need to encourage people to lock their cars. Believe it or not, people are still leaving cars overnight unlocked making them easy pickings for people to just walk round and trying car door handles seeing if their luck’s in. Patrols will remain in place for the time being as it is a district priority. Other areas of work have seen some great results for the team, for example, officers on patrol saw a car crash, tumbling over a number of times into a water filled ditch. Officers acted promptly to rescue the driver and tended to their injuries until the ambulance arrived. Pure luck of being in the right place at the right time, with the prompt action from the officer, no doubt
contributed to saving this person’s life. Officers took into police protection a vulnerable young person from an address in Whittlesey, after they had consumed a cocktail of drugs and alcohol. On ambulance attendance, the young person was detained under the Mental Health Act, as it was vital she obtained immediate hospitalisation and treatment. Some excellent arrests have been made in matter of domestic assaults, a GBH assault where weapons were used, criminal damages and possession of drugs to name a few. Traffic have also assisted with patrols and removed a drink driver from our streets and assisted with our car crime patrols. With our focus on traffic related matters, we have issued over 40 tickets and removed one car for no insurance, or other documents.. We worked in great partnership with health services to execute a warrant under the Mental Health Act. This enabled us to get specialist assessments done, where they had failed before. This person has now been admitted to hospital for treatment.

D I S C O V E R I N G Whittlesea | April 201528
This is one of the blessings used at the end of Holy Communion on Easter Sunday. Most of our services end with a blessing in God’s name, given by the priest or minister. What is a blessing? ‘God bless you’ used to be a regular expression that people used either as a greeting or more often when parting company. Now it is more likely to be heard as “Ah, God bless” or just “Ah, bless”, for example when people see a baby or receive sad news; it is said in an appropriate tone of voice. To bless someone or something has always being part of the Christian tradition. A blessing is about recognising and giving God’s goodness. We declare that those who are blessed are part of God’s creation and that God is part of this person’s life. We recognise that there is goodness in the people and things that God has created.
The final blessing in a Church service sends the congregation out into the world to witness to their faith and to serve the needs of the world. They take with them God’s blessing and in that way become a blessing from God to others. Blessing has an important part in all of our services. We bless a baby in Baptism, the couple in a Wedding and the departed at a Funeral. Congregations are also blessed on each of these occasions. We pray as a Church that God’s blessing will be known throughout the world. In His blessing may you know His love and goodness in your lives. We pray that you will receive His blessing this Easter. A Happy and Blessed Easter to you all
God, who through the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ has given us the victory,
give you joy and peace in your faith;and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the
Holy Spirit,
Organisers of the recent big pike match fished on Whittlesey AA waters were very reluctant to give out details, particularly the venues they fished and peg numbers for fear of poachers attempting to remove the pike. However after reports of a huge pike taken in the last predator match of the season by 13 year old Thomas Moore, it
was worthy of a full report. It was a pair’s match which saw his dad Jon making up the team on the day, with the match taking part on the fen waters just out side of Whittlesey. The first half of the match passed off with very little activity, then young Thomas struck into a fish that took his small dead bait. His dad came running up with the net but at first thought his son had hooked the bottom but as the huge fish reluctantly started to move around the swim he was as excited as young Thomas. After a lengthy battle the fish was finally netted and went to

| Fishing news by Ken Wade the scales at 29lb. Together with a smaller fish of 8lb 2oz the Moore team from Yaxley took first prize on the day and Thomas took the individual honours too. Unfortunately, dad did not contribute, well apart from netting the brace of fish caught by Thomas! A day to remember, that’s for sure. With the season now closed on fenland rivers and drains, anglers have now switched over to our local stillwaters. Already, the likes of East Delph Fishery have been producing lots of double figure fish and it’s much the same at Railway Lakes. Match weights on the Decoy complex have improved dramatically and the relatively new Float Fish Farm Fishery is well worth a visit for the pleasure angler with a huge variety of pools to choose from. Most anglers have been catching well on maggots, with sweetcorn and pellet very good alternatives, particularly now the weather is warming up. Northey Park has gone through some changes to the lakes on the complex, but it’s still a very pleasant venue and I am hearing great things about Kingsland Fishery, with both of the carp lakes fishing really well. A final note for everyone thinking of going fishing, remember to get yourself a rod licence. They run from April each year and at this time of the year, Environment Agency bailiffs are often checking anglers at our local stillwaters.PIC: Thomas Moore catching a pike

scored (Ask us for our Dingey Dell Free Range Pork)• 1- 2 tablespoons salt• Handful of fresh sage
Sauce:• 400g Bramley apples
• 25g piece of root ginger
| Food
Simon Norris,J Jones Butchers
• 3 tbsp water • 2 tbsp white balsamic vinegar• 40g sugar • Zest ½ lemon
• Pinch dried chilli flakes, (if adventurous)
Method:1. Preheat your oven to the max for 20 mins.
2. Rub the salt well into the skin and underside of the joint, lay the sage leaves in the roasting tin and
place the meat on top. Cook in the oven for 30 minutes. Your crackling will be complete.
3. Reduce the heat to very low, 150°C/130°C fan/Gas Mark 2. Remove from the oven and cover the
tin with thick aluminium foil, then return to the oven and cook for 4½ - 5 hours until the meat is very
tender.4. Transfer the pork to a warmed dish to rest. Pour the cooking juices into a container, discard the fat and reserve the juices. To crisp the crackling, remove the skin from the joint and place it back
into the empty roasting tin. Increase the oven temperature back to 230°C/210°C fan/Gas Mark 8
and cook for 30 mins.5. To make the sauce. Peel, core and dice the
apples then peel and chop the ginger, place both in a saucepan with the water, balsamic vinegar, sugar, lemon zest and chilli. Put on the lid, stirring
occasionally and cook until the apples have softened and broken down.
6. Spoon the sauce into a serving bowl.7. Serve the meat thickly sliced with the crackling and apple sauce as a traditional roast with gravy
made from the juices or alternatively shred the meat and serve in soft rolls with a drizzle of the
juices, the apple sauce and the crackling on the side.
Slow cooked shoulder of Dingley Dell, outdoor reared pork with a spiced apple sauce
One of my favourite ways to cook pork, long and slow, producing fantastic flavours. You can either serve this with hot gravy
and vegetables, or my favourite is in a warm baguette with this tasty sauce.

The New Crown
alking into The New Crown, it’s clear to see that the pub has been taken on by very safe hands. Newly upholstered chairs, a beautiful old piano and plenty of tables are ready to welcome hungry and thirsty visitors. There’s a change in the air at the pub, but at the heart is the same welcoming, friendly and cosy atmosphere. And Tracy Lock is no stranger to the pub herself. Thirty years ago she helped her father run The New Crown, and returned to help behind the bar over eighteen months ago. Now she is the landlady, and determined to maintain its excellent reputation for great food and real ales. “We’re just hoping to expand on what we’ve already got,” explained Tracy, which means more great food including lunches from Tuesday to Saturday, evening meals and delicious Sunday lunch. The pub’s chef is exceptional, and everything is homemade, Tracy proudly explained. As well as great music, The New Crown offers affordable accommodation with private facilities, and special live music evenings. With her musical family helping beside her, there’s no doubt that the pub will be our newest and exciting venue for acoustic nights and special occasions. Following a popular Mother’s Day lunch, The New Crown is next offering an Easter Sunday lunch. You can choose from a two-course menu from £11.99, or three-courses for only £15.99. That evening will also showcase an acoustic set. A word of warning however, the lunches are very popular, so do book now to avoid disappointment. And with reviews on
WhittleseyI’ve spent many a time sat in The New Crown, in fact I celebrated my engagement inside its very walls. So nothing gave me greater pleasure than to see it standing proud and looking fresh. I spoke to new licensee Tracy Lock, to find out what she has planned for this popular local pub
Facebook such as “Just been for Valentine’s night, excellent food, excellent music, thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Can’t wait to go again,” you can see why! The New Crown has something for everyone: a great children’s menu for families, real ales for those who appreciate a quality drink, and fantastic homemade food. I know I’ll be back! Interesting articles to help you understand your body better.
T : 01733 785214, W: www.whittlesey-osteopaths.com, E: [email protected]
Are we in control of our hormones or do our hormones control us? A difficult question and one we shall endeavour to answer this month.
Hormones are produced in response to a certain event either outside or within the body. For example, seeing your daughter get married triggers happiness via the release of the serotonin hormone or eating causes an increase in blood sugar levels, which in turn causes the release of the insulin hormone.
The purpose of hormones is to either:- enhance our interaction with the event, as serotonin does in the above example, or- to counteract the event, as with insulin in the above example.
As a general rule, hormones that elicit emotional / behavioural changes tend to enhance the event. Hormones involved in controlling our internal environment tend to counteract the event This is because in the body we want to maintain a fairly constant state, a status quo as it were. Thus any deviation from this and our body reacts against it in order tore-establish the status-quo. Our emotions/behaviours are triggered for a purpose, or so our body thinks. If we are happy, it is because something or some event has made us happy and therefore the body feels this is the way we should be feeling at that time. So, it enhances it. The same is true for other emotions such as sadness, fear, anxiety, anger, contentment, etc.
So as the event continues [either the marriage day or our eating], the greater the concentration of that hormone in our blood. The emotional urge or the outcome becomes harder and harder to resist. The hormones are now in control, hence why sometimes we can not stop crying or laughing despite our environment telling us we should stop.
So how do we regain control? In one of two ways. Either;1) the emotion creates a status within the body that goes further and further from the status quo. At some threshold the internal processes (including other hormones) are activated that are aimed at returning status quo, i.e. stopping the emotion. Take the example of laughing uncontrollably. This will cause a blood pressure rise and because our breathing is disturbed it affects the amount of carbon dioxide in our blood stream. Our blood becomes more and more acidic whilst our blood pressure rises the longer we laugh. At some point, the acidity and pressure stray too far from the status quo activating our internal process. These processes retake control of our breathing, slowing it down and thus interrupting our laughter.
2) By a strong distraction, i.e. another event. The classic comical example is a loving slap across the face when we are hysterical. The slap creates a distraction event, in this case pain. The pain causes its own response which disrupts the hormones control over us.
So the answer is:Hormones’ within the body largely have control. However outside the body they are constantly exerting their presence. Complete control will only be shorted lived.

“Digital Detoxing” Has it Really Come to This?
In a world where the ownership of technological devices is taken for granted by young and not-so-young alike, it is creating alarm in some quarters. Some travel companies are now using the buzz-phrase, “Digital Detoxing”, to sell their wares – who could possibly resist, when a resort is described as offering “a tech-free zone for travellers craving a braincation”? Surely, you’d love to visit a hotel which offers a “black-out option”, where “all devices are surrendered upon check-in.” (This would include mobile phones, iPhones, Blackberrys, pagers and camera phones.) “Digital Detoxing”, however, has caused more than a stir in at least one school recently. The head teacher of a Shropshire prep. school, Martin Stott, has recently experimented with a “digital detox week”, in an effort to wean children and
their parents from on-line devices. He wants pupils to read a lot more, look out of windows on car journeys, play cards and “people-watch”, instead of being totally absorbed by technology.
His fear is that our children are growing up, unable to read
other people’s body language and facial
expressions, if “glued” to their mobiles and headphones whilst in public places.
Children in restaurants on iPads,
while their parents chat, are missing out on so much,
he suggests, whilst “people-watching, a great pastime for many, has been lost to a degree.” He isn’t advocating not using the phone at all, but more an awareness that leisure could, and should, involve novelties such as conversation and actually looking at what’s outside their car window, rather than on the screen in front of them!

Moonwalk - Not just another Saturday night at the movies!
The new clubhouse is taking shape
Lay out the red carpet for The MoonWalk London 2015! As the grant-making breast cancer charity Walk the Walk approaches an incredible £100 million of fundraising, it has launched its iconic flagship event The MoonWalk London 2015. At Midnight on Saturday 16th May, thousands of women and men will once again Power Walk a Half or Full Marathon through the streets of London in the charity’s trademark brightly decorated bras, uniting to raise money and awareness for vital cancer causes, including research into primary and secondary breast cancers. And a local team from Whittlesey will be taking part, including Lucy MacDonald, Matthew Locke, Sarah Morgan, Rachel Clements, Elaine Gilmour-Hoy, Vicky Alexander and (possibly) Kate MacDonald. This year’s theme is ‘Saturday Night at the Movies’, which means that everybody taking part is set to become a STAR. Walkers will be asked to pick their favourite film and whether they become Marilyn Monroe or Minnie Mouse, Pretty
Woman or Princess Leia, James Dean or James Bond, for one night only they will experience the glamour of the big screen as glorious bras fill the streets of London. Walk the Walk can’t wait to welcome its own A- listers to Clapham Common on 16th May, before it’s “lights, camera, action”, as they set off around London. Walk the Walk, often called the health charity, is dedicated to raising money for vital cancer causes including research into primary and secondary cancers, as well as supporting those that have cancer now. This one night is expected to raise in excess of £6million with the aim of granting 75% of the funds to benefitting charities and organisations. Walk the Walk is also passionate about encouraging women and men to set their own goal to become healthier through Power Walking and taking responsibility for their own well-being. STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!
Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Mark Sherwood feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have
struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Whittlesey, Eastrea & Coates areas and Mark is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal
satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much
a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mark a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Whittlesey in BloomHello again from the Whittlesey in Bloom team. March has come along and the sun is shining; there is a cold wind but we are now able to get out into our gardens and do some tidying up and enjoy the snowdrops, crocus and daffodils. Spring has definitely sprung. The Pound is now open once again and we hope that you will drop in as you pass and see what a transformation has taken place. We were successful in obtaining a grant from the Glassmoor Wind Turbine Fund to enable an Interpretation Board to be installed and we hope it will not be too long before you can read all about the history of The Pound on site. The Friends of the Cemetery are busy keeping the grounds spick and span and Fenland Council has agreed to place one of the triple tiered planters inside the gates to help brighten the entrance. The summer project for the Manor entrance flower beds was discussed at the meeting at the beginning of March, and it was agreed that the 70th anniversary of VE day would be the theme for 2015. Discussions have taken place with the nursery and the plants have been ordered. The plants for the barrier planters – to be at the Queen Street/Market Street and High Causeway/Eastgate junctions - have also been ordered. This will be the first year that we have had these and we are sure they will help brighten up our Town Centre. Some residents are under the misconception that Whittlesey in Bloom is funded by the Council – this is not the case; all the plants have to be bought and the only way this can be achieved is through grants and fund raising. Our time is given freely.
Funding: We have once again been very fortunate to receive a significant donation from the Whittlesea Charities; this will enable us to continue for another year. We will also be fund raising ourselves. During the month of July we will be out and about with collecting buckets for donations. Our 2015 theme will be A Penny to a Pound to brighten your Town; as little or as much as you can afford will be gratefully received. We are hoping that some of our businesses will also assist with this project and have collecting boxes. Those of us that form the Whittlesey in Bloom group are dedicated volunteers but more bodies are needed along with the finance to ensure that we can continue. If you can spare an hour or so occasionally please get in touch – many hands make light work. Thank you for your support
If you would like to help our Town/Environment and make new like-minded friends, everyone is welcome

WORLD BOOK DAY AT NEW ROAD SCHOOL New Road School had a very exciting World Book Day this year, because we now have a brand new library at our school. Everyone dressed up as their favourite character from a book and each class spent time in the library. The children enjoyed reading, listening to stories and taking part in our special World Book Day Quiz, in which they had to find out the favourite childhood book of each member of staff. We also had a very mysterious character called ‘Where’s Wally’, who kept appearing and disappearing. Can you spot him in our picture?

Poll cards will be sent out at the start of April and we are urging electors to check if their polling station details have changed. This is especially important for electors in Whittlesey as there have been substantial changes to which polling stations electors will vote at. This is following the changes to the District and Town Warding arrangements which resulted from the recent Boundary changes, Community governance reviews and subsequent Polling District review. Information about which candidates are standing in each of the elections will be available from 4pm on Friday 10th April 2015. This is following the close of the nomination period in which candidates can submit the paperwork to stand for election. This information will be available on our website at www.fenland.gov.uk/elections The last day to register to vote for these elections is the 20th April but we would encourage people who are not yet registered to

| Pets’ corner By Whittlesey Veterinary Centre
Pet NutritionWe all want the best for our pets, but are we really giving the best? Depending on the pets you have, the food you feed can vary.
Cats are carnivores, and can never be vegetarian. They need to have a special protein called taurine that can only be found in meat. Dogs are predominantly carnivores but can eat a wide range of foods, and lots of the foods on the market for dogs have additional vegetables. Strict herbivores like rabbits and guinea pigs need lots of roughage like hay or grasses to graze on. Around 80% of a rabbit’s diet should be hay and the rest made up of fresh vegetables suitable for rabbits, and rabbit pellets. There is also a ‘’muesli’’ that rabbits can have, but they tend to pick out the parts they like best and leave the stuff thats good for them.
Guinea pigs need special food that’s rich in vitamin C. They are unable to produce their own vitamin C and need it supplemented in their diet. Without it, they can become ill and even die.
If we are feeding our pets the correct food and the correct amount we shouldn’t have any problems. Unfortunately, it’s not that easy in the real world, and we do like to give our pet’s treats.
It is then easy for our pets to start to get fat and in some cases become obese. It often happens gradually but, with strict restrictions and low calorie foods, it’s easy to get our pets back to a healthy weight.
There are lots of different foods on the market, catering for every age
and even breed of pet, dry and wet, it’s easy to get confused.
If you are concerned your pet may be overweight or you have any questions on food, you can call your local vets for advice on feeding and what steps to take if your pet is over weight. Here at Whittlesey Veterinary Centre, we offer a free weight clinic for feeding and weight-loss advice.

Whittlesey Lions Club are continuing to support local groups in the community. The Club provided a fish and chip lunch to Whittlesey Disabled Club and also handed out “Message in a Bottle” containers. These are kept in your fridge at home. They contain your medical details should a medic need them in an emergency. The Lions Club also donated £200 to the local youth clubs. The photo shows Lion President Lynn handing over a cheque to Trixie, one of the youth workers. They hope to organise a quiz night for the group. Julie Gunn, Youth Leader, said she was very grateful to the Lions fortheir donation as the groups were struggling at the moment due to having no money for resources. Finally, Whittlesey Lions are holding a Charity Golf Day on Wednesday 29th of April to raise money for Hearing Dogs for the Deaf. This will be held at Ramsey Bowls and Golf Club. Teams of four are required. If you fancy a day of golf with a snack and a meal either side, please contact Lynn Palmer, President.

Cambridgeshire, enjoying a variety of roles and duties such as:
• Foot and vehicle patrols• Roads policing

At long last, the Hobbit returns with Battle of the Five Armies, the final of Peter Jackson’s trilogy. Described by many as a fitting cap to an extended series that has transformed Tolkein’s books in the wider culture. And so what can we expect from this final film, which first stirred our senses with The Lord of the Rings? Well, incredible detail, thrilling and exciting scenes, close combats in crumbling towers, and a bridge towards the next tale, as the dragon leaves the Lonely Mountain and our heroes must prepare for war. For some this will mark a sad end that the Tolkein/Jackson thrilling fantasy world’s have come to an end, and that we no longer can explore the beautiful and dangerous worlds of dwarves, wizards, dragons, elves and Orcs. But for others, the final film is a fitting end to a wonderful creation. There are once again
stand out performances from the likes of Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage and Ken Stott, not to mention the thrilling sight of the magnificent dragon.
If you missed this one at the cinema, make sure you don’t miss it this month!

It is one thing to sit down and carefully consider future events like when the mortgage will be paid off, further education needs of the children, a wedding, special celebration, retirement or a special planned expenditure. The next important step is to make it happen. For most of us, these events need financial planning because the current account does not hold the necessary funds. A simple example might be a child needing to save £10 per week for 10 weeks to buy a £100 bicycle. The same logic applies to larger amounts, although the planning and saving tends to take longer and the amounts are greater. However, unlike a child that is not concerned with taxation; as adults we have to pay taxes in a variety of ways. This leads me on to tax evasion and tax avoidance; the former is illegal and the latter is legitimate. An Individual Savings Account (ISA) provides a tax efficient way of saving or investing, so does a pension plan. Both are examples of avoiding tax. If you are not using these to the full you might be paying more tax than you need to in your effort to save for the future.
Tax Treatment varies according to individual circumstances and is subject to change
Recently there have been notable examples of individuals evading tax by not declaring their assets or becoming involved in schemes that are not approved by the tax authorities. In order to preserve their wealth without paying the tax due, the courts will decide whether they are acting within or outside the law. For most individuals there is no need to step outside of conventional good and legal tax planning – the limits imposed are generous enough. This is why the ‘super rich’ tend to be the ones looking for other ways of reducing exposure to tax. Understanding the very complex rules of taxation and how they apply to individuals and companies is essential for advising those that are accumulating wealth for later, and those seeking to take benefits. The difference between the best and worst route can be astounding, and in some cases there may be many options. .Free Initial Review

Sometimes called “All Fools’ Day”, April 1st is one of the most light-hearted days of the year.
Its origins are uncertain. Whilst some people see it as a celebration related to the turn of the seasons, (closely following the vernal equinox), others believe it stems from the adoption of the new (Gregorian) calendar, over five hundred years ago. The “New Year” was to become January 1st and many people either refused to accept the new date, or did not learn about it, and so continued to celebrate New Year’s Day on April 1st. Other people began to make fun of these traditionalists, sending them on “fool’s errands” or trying to trick them into believing something false. Eventually, the practice spread throughout Europe.
April Fools’ Day is observed throughout the Western world. Practices include sending someone on a “fool’s errand,” looking for things that don’t exist; playing pranks; and trying to get people to believe ridiculous things.
The French call April 1 Poisson d’Avril, or “April Fish.” French children sometimes tape a picture of a fish on the back of their schoolmates, crying
“Poisson d’Avril” when the prank is discovered.
Famous pranks include the following:
a Sweden Covers their TVs in Tights - In 1962, Sweden’s only television channel announced that the station could be viewed in colour, if viewers were to cut up a pair of tights and place them over the screen, which would bend the television’s light to make it appear in colour. Thousands of gullible Swedes fell into the expensive trap, only to realize they were victims of a hoax. It was not until 1970, that colour televisions were to replace the traditional black and white programmes.
a The Earth Loses Gravity - In 1976, BBC Radio 2 reported that, due to rare astronomical alignment of Pluto behind Jupiter, the Earth’s gravity would decrease. Listeners were told to jump in the air at 9:47 a.m. to take advantage of this, which would result in a floating feeling. Many reported that they had felt this floating sensation, one listener even stating that she and her friends lifted from their chairs to float around the room together.
a Home Grown Spaghetti Trees - One of the most famous April Fools’ pranks occurred in 1957, when the BBC news programme “Panorama” reported on Switzerland’s spaghetti harvest. The region’s mild winter and lack of natural spaghetti pests allowed for the fruitful production of home-grown spaghetti. The BBC received many calls from people interested in growing their own spaghetti and were told that they should place a sprig of spaghetti in tomato sauce!

Equity Release Mortgages - benefits and risks
Equity Release Mortgages (ERMs) provide a way for people (often over retirement age) to raise a capital sum by way of a mortgage secured on their home. Although the home is charged with a mortgage the owner(s) are not required to pay monthly instalments as in the case of a normal mortgage. In the case of an ERM no payments are required until the property is sold or the owner (or surviving owner) dies. There are however certain risks which must be considered before a homeowner takes out such a mortgage. These include the following:-
1. The term of the lifetime mortgage is not fixed in advance and so the amount owed to the lender may be greater than that quoted by the lender on a fixed term as required by the lender’s regulatory body.2. Your circumstances may change after you take out the mortgage.3. Inflation may erode the value of your cash advance or income.4. The lender may take action to repossess your home if for example you leave your home unoccupied for more than 3 months or you do not comply with other terms of the loan agreement.5. If you wish to move home and transfer the mortgage to the new property you may only do this if that property meets the lender’s lending
criteria. You could be compelled to repay the mortgage.6. If you need to move into long-term residential or nursing care you must repay the mortgage.7. Taking out the mortgage may affect your eligibility to claim certain benefits. As with all legal transactions you should take independent legal advice before making the final decision to ensure this type of mortgage meets your needs.

The B Team, from the Letter B pub, proved to be the A Team as quiz kings, overcoming stiff competition to win the annual NECCA Whittlesey Quiz night. Fourteen other teams could not match their knowledge as they won in one of the closest competitions in years. Quiz master Julie Windle was delighted with the success of the evening as a record entry packed the Whittlesey Conservative Club for six tough rounds with topics ranging from Science to Sport. Local MP Stephen Barclay who also took part was on hand to present the winning prize to the successful team.
