Of all the pharaohs of Ancient Egypt, Tutankhamun is the most famous. This is due to the unprecedented wealth of artefacts found in his tomb,

which was "discovered" by British archaeologist Howard Carter, in 1922,

some 3000 years after Tutankhamun's death. The quantity of objects

astounded archaeologists who had until then not found a

The 12th king of the 18th Dynasty was only eight or nine years old at hissuccession. His father, menkhkare, died at the age of 25 and the cause

remains a mystery. Tutankhamun was married to Ankhesenamon, the thirddaughter of Akhenaten and Nefertiti. The couple originally lived at el Amarna

but later moved to Memphis where they refurbished the apartments ofAmenhotep III.

The Restoration tela gives an account of his effort to stabilize thegovernment and to restore the temples and honors of the old gods after theAmarna period. He paid the priest and palace staff from his own pockets.

He built a mortuary temple close to Medinet Habu, with two colossalstatues, but they were usurped by his successors. Tutankhamun died at the

age of 19 by a head injury. He was buried in the Valley of the Kings. Twomummified fetuses were found in coffins that had been sealed by his name. These are believed to have been his children that were born prematurely.

The nature of Akhenaten's revolution is well established--he overthrew Egyptian polytheism in favor of the worship ofa single god, Aten--but the reason behind it is still unknown. Many people have offered theories.

When historians first began to study Akhenaten carefully, in the late 1800s, the first thing that naturally came toeveryone's mind was that Akhenaten was divinely inspired. However, it does not seem likely that Akhenaten simply

decided out of the blue to make such a major change. Many early historians, determined to link Akhenaten's religionsomehow to the Jewish religion, said that he was inspired by Joseph or Moses (Redford, p. 4, 1984). This is a

possibility, considering that Joseph, at least, was around in roughly the same time period as Akhenaten. However, after close examination of Akhenaten's religion, this hypothesis seems unlikely. Akhenaten's religion did center on one

god, but his major emphasis was on the Aten's visibility, tangibility, and undeniable realness. Akhenaten placed noemphasis, therefore, on faith.

Tutankhamun was born in 1343 BC. Tutankhamun was first

known as Tutankhaten, meaning "Living Image of Aten". The

background of King Tut encompasses one of the most chaotic

periods in the history of Ancient Egypt. It was the time when

the lives of all Ancient Egyptians were turned upside down.
