To offer an alternative way of life, without drugs, medications or artificial stimulation. To educate others to be healthy and fit, and to be in touch with themselves, others and the environment.

Tai Chi Chuan is not designed to promote mus-
cle size or enhance physical endurance. It is
used to stimulate the internal organs gently,
exercise the body, calm the nervous system and
mobilize the joints. In time, the mind has a
stillness and clarity rarely experienced with
other forms of exercise. Clinical studies have
shown that Tai Chi practice can lower blood
pressure, reduce nervous tension, and benefit
the immune, digestive, cardiovascular and respi-
ratory systems.
The Tai Chi form is but a part of the whole Tai
Chi Chuan system which is over 400 years old,
a relatively new art in the Shaolin history. Origi-
nally, it was a formidable internal and external
martial art which was also beneficial to health.
It is a martial art which embodies Taoist phi-
losophy. One uses a balance of Yin (female)
techniques with Yang (male) techniques, a bal-
ance between yielding and attacking. The vast
array of martial arts techniques at the disposal
of the Tai Chi student gives a lifetime of poten-
tial study in this most excellent self-defense sys-
tem.
Correct Tai Chi practice especially requires that
the heart must be quiet, the attention must be
concentrated, and one must understand and pay
attention to “using mind, not physical strength.”
Advance and retreat are consistent. Movements
unfold with elegance and composure, continu-
ous and unbroken. This requires every part of
the body to be relaxed and alert , coordinating
and timing breathing, which in turn encourages
natural respiration strengthening the respiratory
system.
Tai Chi Chuan
Practical
Applications
Chi Kung is over 4,000 years old and is the art of
developing vital energy particularly for health,
vitality, mind expansion and spiritual cultivation.
It is self healing through energy placement. It is
an important aspect of Chinese medicine and
used throughout China as a therapeutic exercise in
many hospitals and clinics. The deep breathing
relaxes the mind and promotes a state of well be-
ing enhancing “chi” (energy) and oxygenating the
blood, organs and cells of the body.
There are thousands of types of Chi Kung and
hence, it is understandable that there are also dif-
ferent levels of attainment in the various types of
Chi Kung.
There are many wonderful benefits derived from
practicing Chi Kung, and they may generalized
into the following five categories:
• Curing illness and promoting health.
• Enhancing vitality and developing internal
force.
• Promoting youthfulness and longevity.
• Expanding the mind and the intellect.
• Spiritual cultivation.
According to Chinese medical thought, practicing
Chi Kung can cure as well as prevent all kinds of
illness, including diseases which are generally con-
sidered “incurable” by conventional medicine.
Practicing Chi Kung is also very effective for over-
coming psychological problems.
Chi Kung “Energy Control”
Self Healing Applica-tions
The Lohan School of Shaolin, under the direction of Founder, Reverend Master Steven Baugh, is dedicated to teaching the arts of ancient China both martially and spiritually, and to carry on the tradition of the great mas-ters. It is his hope that others will feel the same dedication to pass on this culture intact and unspoiled. The Lohan School encom-passes the entire art of Shaolin, both inter-nally and externally. Master Steve studied many forms of mar-tial arts and was taught & certified by some of the most renowned masters on the West Coast, many of whom left China before the Communists took power. He studied Tai Chi Chu’an under Master Marshall Ho, founder of the National Tai Chi Association in Los Angeles. He was also ordained as a priest in the Hsu Yun Chan Yen Buddhist order in 1998 in Honolulu, Hawaii and was elevated to the title of Dashi (comparable to Abbot) in 2003. The school offers classes in Yang, Chen and Tao Tai Chi which also includes the weapons in swords, sabers, fans and staffs.
